CALEXICO, Calif. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of a man who was hit by a vehicle driven by a U.S. Border Patrol agent near the U.S.-Mexico border. U.S. Customs and Border Protection says the incident happened about 8:40 p.m. Friday when the agent was driving to a spot along the border to investigate reports of people illegally crossing it. The agent’s vehicle hit a man who was lying in the road. The agent immediately rendered aid to the man until emergency medical services arrived. The agency says the man was first taken to a nearby hospital and then airlifted to a trauma center in Palm Springs, where he died. 642

Carlsbad (KGTV): Voters in Carlsbad could put women in charge of the local government, as female candidates overwhelmingly outnumber male candidates in the races for Mayor and City Council.Right now, there is just one woman on the five-seat council, which includes the Mayor. The lone female, Cori Schumacher, is currently running for mayor against incumbent Matt Hall.Meanwhile, Council-members Mark Packard and Michael Schumacher are not seeking reelection.Six candidates have come forward to fill their spots, five of which are women. In District One, Linda Breen, Tracy Carmichael, Barbara Hamilton, and David McGee are running. In District Three, Priya Bhat-Patel is facing Corrine Busta.Depending on the outcomes of those elections, women could hold 3 of the five City Council seats. And, even if Schumacher loses, she'll still keep her current position on the Council."I think it's about time," says Loann Simon from the League of Women Voters in North County.Simon believes the rise of the women's movement in the last few years has spurred more women to come forward and get more involved in local politics."Women are becoming braver," she says. "I think it’s something that’s evolving, but after 2016, it’s kind of flipped a switch." A "pink wave" would be rare in Carlsbad. According to the Coast News, only 11 women have been elected to the City Council in the last 66 years.Simon says more female candidates means more of a focus on women's issues, like family, health and open space."It brings their voice to the table. It’s not enough to just shout about what you want. You have to bring what you want to the table for your voice to be heard."Simon's group runs a non-partisan website that breaks down every race and issue in the upcoming election, votersedge.org. Users can enter their zip code and get a personalized breakdown of their ballot. 1893

Flames were contained to about five acres by 1 p.m. They appeared to be confined to eucalyptus trees east of The Crossings golf course and near office buildings.Carlsbad Police reported on twitter they briefly evacuated businesses on Dryden Place about noon. The evacuation was lifted about 20 minutes later. There was no word on what caused the fire.Westbound traffic on Palomar Airport Road was stopped at Camino Vida Roble.Check traffic 696

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - Dozens gathered in Carlsbad Saturday afternoon protesting the closures of businesses and schools due to the coronavirus."We got to get our economy going again and we need our businesses and schools open at the same time," San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond said. The rally comes as San Diego is seeing progress during the pandemic, eligible to fall off the state's watch list and potentially reopen schools in two weeks.RELATED: Del Mar increases mask enforcement as crowds fill beachesActivists at the Shoppes at Carlsbad say that is too long to wait."The longer this pandemic and the shutdown occurs, the more likely some of these businesses are never going to reopen," Oceanside Mayor Peter Weiss said.In the crowd was Juan Velasco, co-owner of Slight Edge Hair Salon in Oceanside. He said one of the hardest decisions he had to make was telling his 12 stylists he had to close down."It was so disheartening because it doesn’t allow us the opportunity to allow them to work and to provide for their families," Velasco said.RELATED: What happens next? San Diego County eligible to fall off of California watch listSupervisor Jim Desmond preached the need to reopen schools and businesses together, saying, "they need to have their kids in school to go back to work, they don’t have time to do the homeschooling ... We want to do it with the social distancing we want to do it with the masks."Desmond gestured to the crowd saying they were promoting social distancing and mask-wearing at the event. Most of the crowd was wearing masks."Right now, there are not enough choices out there, there are some waivers that are working their way through the process but we want to get more schools open sooner rather than later," Desmond added.RELATED: CDC: After COVID-19 recovery, patients are likely unable to spread virus for 3 monthsWhile the shutdown is devastating, last time San Diego reopened for dining in and retail, three and a half weeks later, the county started to see a spike in COVID-19 cases. Then, gyms, bars, and hotels reopened and another huge spike forced a rollback in reopening measures.Businesses lost a huge amount of revenue, after installing precautions to meet county standards and buying perishable products. While it's a risk, business owners like Velasco are hopeful to get back to work."If we get the word on Monday, I bring them back on Monday," Velasco said. "With everything they’ve lost, to give them the opportunity again it would be the highlight of the year for me."But reopening could mean a resurgence in cases. 2584
