Officials confirmed several people were injured after an explosion at a business in Mt. Nursing homes are facing a new mandate for COVID-19 testing.Officials at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) say if they're not doing it, they'll be fined 0 a day or over ,000 for each instance of noncompliance.The government says nursing homes need to do widespread testing of residents and staff if any resident shows symptoms or tests positive.Nursing homes will also be required to test staff more often, depending on the virus activity in the area.The Trump administration says it is giving facilities .5 billion to help with costs.Nursing homes continue to raise concerns about the cost of this testing and additional expenses like personal protective equipment and additional staffing due to the pandemic.The mandate also comes as their sources of revenue have changed along with the number of residents declining.With the added costs and revenue change, LeadingAge, the association of nonprofit providers of aging services, is hearing from some of its members that they may be forced to close. At least one nursing home in Rhode Island has had to do it already. Others are looking at the possibility of having to consolidate or alter the services provided.Nursing homes get paid through Medicaid, Medicare and private payments. According to a Kaiser Family Foundation analysis of Certification and Survey Provider Enhanced Reports data, nationwide 62 percent is paid through Medicaid, 26 percent is paid through private payments and 12 percent is paid through Medicare.Post-acute care through Medicare is a big revenue source for nursing homes. That means you're coming out of the hospital and need to rehab for a few weeks in a nursing home."With elective surgeries being closed down, there is no steady flow of residents who need that level of care. That's been cut off entirely," said Katie Smith Sloan, President and CEO of LeadingAge.Sloan says they need those elective surgeries to start up again everywhere to fill that gap in revenue lost as a result of the pandemic.The most recent survey from insurance company Genworth Financial finds the national median cost for a private room at a nursing home is more than 0,000 a year.Depending on your financial situation, you may start paying this and then have Medicaid start paying later.Leading Age says they haven't heard from their members that they'll be increasing prices because of the financial challenges they're facing."Nursing homes charge what the market will bear, and I don't think the market can bear much more than that," Sloan said. OCILLA, Ga. — A nurse at an immigration detention center in Georgia says authorities performed questionable hysterectomies, refused to test detainees for COVID-19 and shredded medical records.Advocacy group Project South has filed a complaint with the Homeland Security Department's internal watchdog that relies heavily on the nurse's words.That nurse, Dawn Wooten, worked at the Irwin County Detention Center in southern Georgia. In addition to holding detainees for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, it also serves those arrested by the U.S. Marshals and the Irwin County Sheriff's Department.In her complaint, Wooten called a gynecologist who works outside the facility, "the uterus collector." She claimed that nearly every inmate who saw the doctor received a hysterectomy and claimed the doctor removed the "wrong ovary" on at least one patient.Wooten said it was unclear if the patients — particularly immigrant women — knowingly agreed to the procedure, which would prevent them from having children in the future.She says she saw a sick-call nurse shred a box of detainee complaints without looking at them.Wooten claimed she was eventually fired from the facility for raising concerns about COVID-19. She said she was demoted after she missed time for presenting symptoms of the virus.She claims that inmates were likely infected with the virus at a rate much higher than reported because the facility declined to use two rapid-testing COVID-19 machines. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV)- The freeway is back open in Oceanside after a big rig crash caused a major mess. It happened just after 10:30 a.m. on the southbound I-5 just north of Harbor Drive near Camp Pendleton. According to the CHP, the driver of a flatbed pulled off to the shoulder to check the equipment he was carrying. The driver of a big-rig hauling an excavator passed by and clipped the rear tire of the truck that was parked. The driver of the semi lost control, went down the embankment, hit a tree and flipped over. Remarkably, the driver is expected to be OK. "Very fortunate, judging the distance and the weight that we're looking at in these vehicles and the condition that the big rig is in that he sustained only minor injuries, " said CHP Officer Mark Latulippe. The big rig also caught on fire, but drivers stopped to help. "After the big rig had come to a stop on its side, a small fire had broken out. Some witnesses and passer-bys that had seen the crash actually stopped and put out the fire with some fire extinguishers," said Officer Latulippe. Clearing the wreckage was a long and complicated process."It's kind of a mess. There's a lot of pieces. It's entangled within a tree. The excavator is off the trailer, mostly off the trailer, the big rig truck tractor's portion of that is coming apart in pieces as we are trying to get it up," described Officer Latulippe.
