Tesla CEO Elon Musk has made bold claims about the company's upcoming electric pickup. Now Ford, maker of America's most popular pickup truck, is already pushing back with a demonstration of what its planned electric F-150 could be capable of doing.Ford released video of a prototype electric F-150 towing a line of freight train cars weighing, according to Ford, over 1 million pounds. The truck, driven by F-150 chief engineer Linda Zhang, pulled the train for 1,000 feet. After that was done, Ford added train cars carrying 42 F-150 pickups -- one for every year that the Ford F-series has been the bestselling truck in America -- and Zhang pulled the train again. With the trucks, the train weight rose to 1.25 million pounds, according to Ford.Ford pointed out that this was a "one-time short event demonstration," in which the prototype was "towing far beyond any production truck's published capacity." Ford has not yet announced how much the production version of the truck will be capable of towing over long distances during day-to-day use.Ford did not say what sort of battery power, electric motors or gear ratios the prototype truck was using. In a podcast interview in June, 1198

The Humane Society of the United States went undercover, investigating animal testing at one of the largest contract research organizations in the world. Officials found dozens of beagles and hounds that were force-fed fungicides to test a new pesticide product at a lab in Michigan. The undercover video is hard to watch. "In some cases, the animals are forced to ingest substances either by putting a gel capsule down their throats or with a tube,” Kathleen Conlee, vice president of Animal Research Issues at the Humane Society of the United States, can be heard saying in the undercover video. For some, it’s hard to fathom. However, Conlee says this kind of animal testing happens more often than we think. "There are about 60,000 dogs at about 350 facilities in the United States right now, and I think the public is very shocked to learn that it's at that scale,” Conlee says. And that's just dogs. Conlee explains when you factor in all animals, the number being used for testing is closer to 25 million per year. "That's warm-blooded animals that doesn't include fish, reptiles, amphibians," she explains. In this case out of Michigan, 36 beagles were being used to test pesticides for a company called Dow Chemical Company. It’s a practice that is not against the law. "The company is doing legal activities,” Conlee says. “Nothing illegal was happening." Often times, Conlee says federal agencies like the FDA and EPA request animal tests to approve products or provide funding for experiments. Most recently, the U.S.D.A. was under fire by a separate animal watchdog group for alleged "kitten cannibalism,” where they report experiments involving feeding kittens to dogs. These are practices Conlee says should stop."We're going to be calling on these agencies to change their practices,” she says. 1826

That scene from “Friends” when we find out Ross is still a patient at his pediatrician’s office is getting more common for young adults. One reason is young adults can stay on a parent's insurance until they are 26 years old so it's easier and more affordable to stick with the same doctor. There are downsides though.“If they start to get medical conditions, high blood pressure, hypertension, adult onset diabetes, those more … adult medical conditions, that’s an appropriate time to say, ‘hey maybe it’s time to transition to an adult provider,’ ” said Dr. Christina Johns with PM Pediatrics. The pediatric emergency physician says one benefit of staying on with a pediatrician longer is the patient continues to see someone familiar with their medical history, especially for those with chronic childhood health issues. And she says it prevents the young adults from moving into another trend she's noticing — relying solely on emergency room and urgent care only.“There really does seem to be a large group of adults who use those places as their primary care,” the pediatrician said. “It’s really important to have a relationship with a primary care doctor.”Johns says when young adults become parents and when women need regular OB/GYN care, those are also appropriate times to transition away from a pediatrician. The American Academy of Pediatrics discourages transitioning away from pediatric care solely based on age. Their position is that it’s a decision between a patient and their doctor. It should take into account meeting the needs of the patient and the abilities of the doctor. 1606
