Beginning in 2024, there will be new standards for nominees of the coveted Best Picture Academy Award. The changes are meant to encourage equitable representation and “better reflect the diversity of the movie-going audience,” according to the Academy.In order for a film to qualify to be a Best Picture nominee, they must meet two of four new representation and inclusion standards. It’s part of Academy Aperture 2025, an initiative by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that sets specific inclusion goals for the organization and the films it recognizes.Movies wishing to be considered for Best Picture in 2022 and 2023 will need to submit a form attesting to their inclusion and representation practices, however meeting the specific Academy standards will not be required until the 96th Oscars in 2024.The standards include having at least 30 percent of all actors on-screen from at least two underrepresented groups, having a storyline or theme that centers on underrepresented group(s); as well as efforts behind the camera like having representation from underrepresented groups in creative leadership and department head positions, overall crew composition, and paid internship and apprenticeship opportunities for underrepresented groups.“The aperture must widen to reflect our diverse global population in both the creation of motion pictures and in the audiences who connect with them,” said Academy President David Rubin and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson. “We believe these inclusion standards will be a catalyst for long-lasting, essential change in our industry.”Another change fans will notice in 2021, the Best Picture category will be limited to ten nominees, rather than a fluctuating number year-to-year.Here is the full list of standards from the Academy. BOSTON (AP) — Colleges and universities are pushing back against the Trump administration’s decision to make international students leave the country if they plan on taking classes entirely online this fall. Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology filed a lawsuit seeking to block the rule Wednesday, and other universities are promising to work with students to keep them in the country. Beginning Tuesday, anyone traveling to Hawaii must fill out a "Safe Travels" application, the Hawaiian government announced.In a news release, the government said the health information the travelers provide on the application would be a way for them to protect the health of their residents and visitors during the coronavirus pandemic.The new screening process will also include temperature checks upon arrival and secondary screening for anyone with symptoms or temperatures of 100.4℉ or higher."I am pleased to launch this digital app, which will allow our travelers to provide their required health and travel information before they arrive at the airport," said Gov. David Ige in the press release. "It will also help us keep in contact with those who are required to be in quarantine. This is an important step in preparing to reopen our economy."Currently, the government has visitors fill out two different forms: one for inter-island and trans-pacific travel."This [new] platform provides a one-stop-shop for both types of travelers," the government said.The way it works is that travelers will enter their information and travel plans 24 hours before their flight.
