(CNS) -- Police Friday announced the arrest of a 54-year-old Poway man on suspicion of killing a young woman in Carlsbad 33 years ago.James Charles Kingery was arrested Wednesday in connection with the sexual assault and murder of 26-year-old Julia Hernandez-Santiago, whose body was found on Oct. 10, 1987, on an ivy-covered embankment in the 2100 block of Alga Road, west of Alicante Road, Carlsbad police spokesman Jodee Reyes said.The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office determined the cause of death was asphyxiation due to strangulation."Investigators were able to recover several pieces of key evidence at the time; however, a suspect was never identified," Reyes said.Over the next three decades, detectives continued to follow leads and technology eventually helped reveal new investigative angles to probe.Last March, San Diego County sheriff's deputies arrested a man on narcotics and weapons violations and took a DNA sample from him, as required by law based on his alleged offenses, Reyes said. Last May, the sheriff's crime lab notified Carlsbad police that the DNA samples from the 1987 murder case were a match for Kingery.Kingery was booked into the San Diego Central jail around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday on suspicion of murder, according to jail records. He was being held without bail pending his arraignment, scheduled for July 31.A motive for the killing has not been disclosed. 1428

Both fought for desegregation and civil rights alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.“My father always talked about creating dramas that allow people to see themselves and have to decide who they were in the bigger picture,” said Bevel.Her father was with Dr. King in Memphis and witnessed his assassination in April 1968.“After I was born even, the civil rights workers were finding there will be small communities where Black men's bodies were found in cotton fields and that kind of thing and my mother shared that she had spent like days trying to convince somebody from one of the wire services to come down and report on a body that they had found,” said Bevel. “And it just wasn't news. It wasn’t news.”Both women point to education and more listening as the core path to resolution and coexistence.“We haven't been serious for a long time about educating our citizens,” Bevel said. “And I don't just mean Black and brown people in the inner cities. CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man was arrested after reportedly assaulting two Border Patrol agents as they attempted to arrest him for trying to smuggle people into the U.S. According to the agency, the incident happened around 1:17 a.m. Tuesday as agents patrolled Interstate 8 in Campo. Agents tried to stop a 2007 Ford F-350 near Kitchen Creek Road when the driver took off, leading agents on a high-speed chase. RELATED: 14-year-old tried to smuggle meth strapped to body, CBP saysAccording to Border Patrol, agents successfully deployed a tire deflation device, forcing the vehicle to stop a short distance later, but the driver got out and fled on foot. As agents searched for man, he reportedly jumped out of a nearby bush, tackling one of the officers to the ground. A second agent also responded to the scene, struggling with the suspect as well. Inside the F-350, agents found three men and one woman, all Mexican nationals in the U.S. illegally. They were all taken to a Border Patrol station for processing and the suspect, identified as a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, was arrested. BURBANK (CNS) - The Walt Disney Co. reported sharp year-over-year third-quarter revenue drops today, thanks in part to the coronavirus-prompted closure of its theme parks, but the success of its streaming services, most notably Disney+, gave the Burbank company a needed boost.Disney reported third-quarter revenue of .8 billion, a 42% drop from last year's third quarter, but still ahead of industry expectations.Revenue losses were fueled largely by the closure of Disney parks worldwide, with the company's Parks, Experiences and Products segment seeing an 85% revenue drop from the third quarter of last year. (KGTV) -- First responders in Carlsbad are prepared for any emergency, thanks to their state of the art training facility."This is how we become good," says Carlsbad Fire Captain Scott Tucker. "This is our hallowed ground where we get to spend all the time, make the mistakes here, so we don't make them out there."The Carlsbad Safety Training Center spans four acres. It includes a four-story live burn tower, a two-story home, and a main street replica. It also has two shooting ranges, classrooms, and computer simulation rooms.The parking lot can also be used for driving simulations and tests."It's realistic training," says Carlsbad Police Captain Peter Pascual. "The officers can utilize what they learn in the training environment, out in the field."The shooting ranges are adaptable, letting agencies set up different scenarios. They can even drive cars into the range. "It allows us to get in the right frame of mind in how to survive and solve these problems in the field," says Pascual. "We try to create scenarios that are realistic and functional for the success of the officers in the field.""It allows us to get a good foundation in training and build on stuff that we normally don't get to do," says Tucker.Facility Manager Jason Kennedy says the complex tries to stay as modern as possible, always adding more ways to train."We're always looking forward, cause training is so dynamic," says Kennedy. "We're trying to look forward at what things are emerging in the environment."The facility has become so popular, other state and federal agencies have rented the facility from Carlsbad for their own training events.This year, 28 different agencies from around California and the rest of the United States have booked time to train in Carlsbad.
