SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - An East County family is channeling their pain into helping domestic violence survivors in San Diego. The family's loved one, 19-year-old Kiera Bergman, was murdered last year in Arizona. ”What helps us is being able to help other people and we want her story and her memory to stay alive and that’s why we’re choosing to do donation drives, because we want to be able to help people that are in the same situation she was in," said Mindy Tarantino, Kiera's aunt. Investigators believe Bergman's boyfriend, Jon Clark, is responsible for her death. Clark faces first-degree murder charges and is set to stand trial in a few months. “I'll look at pictures that I have of her and then all of a sudden you just get overwhelmed, I get anxiety really quick, and it just really hits me that she’s gone," said Kiera's grandmother, Sandie Bergman. They are collecting various toiletries and items like diapers to donate to Becky's House, a nonprofit working to break the cycle of domestic violence and homelessness.A donation drive was held in Santee on Monday, but you can also donate online through the family's Amazon Wish List. 1155

SEATTLE (KGTV) -- Newly released body camera footage shows the moment police officers nabbed a pair of thieves trying to walk out of a Seattle-area Costco carrying ,200 worth of laptops and vacuums.On March 14, South Precinct officers responded to a call at about 5:30 p.m. of a shoplift in progress at the Costco, police said. Loss Prevention officers inside the store recognized one of the suspects inside and said he had previously stolen items in the past and run out the fire exit. Responding Seattle Police Department officers spotted a female driver inside a black Toyota that was backed up to the store's emergency exit doors.  The officers pulled their patrol vehicle in front of the Toyota to prevent it from leaving and contacted the 18-year-old woman, police said.As police were talking with the woman, they could hear someone attempting to open the doors."Moments later, two suspects, a 30-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman opened the emergency doors and attempted to walk out of the store carrying stolen computers and vacuum cleaners," police said.Officers located a 7″ fixed blade from the male suspect. According to the security personnel, the suspect had carried a large knife in past incidents.The male suspect was later booked into the King County Jail for investigation of robbery, while the two women were booked for investigation of theft, police said. 1428

(KGTV) -Business owners in San Ysidro worry that yet another month of restrictions on non-essential travel between the US, Mexico, and Canada could close them for good.For the eighth month in a row, the land borders between the United States and its neighboring countries to the north and south will remain closed to non-essential travel to help limit the spread of COVID-19.Monday U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials confirmed the extension would last through at least December 21st.Geneva Gamez and her family run Tacos La Fronterra in San Ysidro. "It's kind of been a roller coaster ever since. Everything keeps changing," said Gamez. The agreement continues the hold on tourism and recreational trips, but essential business and trade are not affected. Crossing for educational or medical reasons is also permitted. "You don't get much traffic down there unless somebody is going into Mexico or coming back from Mexico," said Gamez.Gustavo De La Fuente is the executive director of the Smart Border Coalition. He said the impact of the restrictions is far-reaching." You're looking at a little over 700 businesses that could close definitely, and that's actually very worrisome," said De La Fuente. The holiday season is when many of the business owners make most of their money."This is the time of the year when 80% or more of their sales are coming for the entire year, their sales are most of their sales are concentrated in these last 5, 6 weeks of the year," said De La Fuente. Gamez hopes people remember the family-owned businesses when they're doing their holiday shopping. "It's affecting part of the San Diego community that's somehow you know isolated, cause it's so close to the border and it's often forgotten, if people could just make the effort if they can, to drive down there or somehow support small businesses in the area, they'd be doing a lot of good for that part of the community." 1946

SANDUSKY, Ohio — Just as summer began, so did the immigration raids in northeast Ohio.The first one happened on June 5 at Corsos, a garden and flower center in Sandusky, Ohio where 114 people were arrested as their workday started.Two weeks later, U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement raided another company called Fresh Mark. ICE raided all three of the company's locations, including the one in Canton, Ohio. More than 140 workers were arrested there, many of them accused of using false identification to get their jobs."We want to support our families and we want to protect and defend them so that they don't get split apart which you see is happening all over the place," said Veronica Dahlberg, executive director of HOLA Ohio, a small, grassroots Latino organization based in northeast Ohio.Dahlberg and the folks at HOLA Ohio stepped in to pay some of the bonds for those arrested in Sandusky."So far we've helped 21 of the farm workers, so we post the bonds for them at the Cleveland Heights deportation office," Dahlberg said.HOLA Ohio has raised ,000 to put towards bonding out the workers, and so far they used over ,000.Dahlberg said the family reunions have been bittersweet."When you see those reunions and you can deliver mom to the children or dad back to the household and the people are just so happy," she said. "There's a lot of tears, a lot of hugs, a lot of sadness. SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) — Palomar College announced Friday that the school's police academy will no longer train cadets on how to perform a carotid restraint hold.The restraint will not be taught or used in the academy setting, according to Palomar's Director of Public Safety Programs Michael Andrews.“Effective last week, the tactic is no longer being employed or used in the academy setting, period,” Andrews said. “We won’t even use it as an example. It will just simply be erased from training.”RELATED: San Diego County law enforcement agencies that have stopped using carotid restraintPalomar's decision comes after several agencies through San Diego County ended the use of the restraint technique amid demonstrations against police violence.On June 18, the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training approved changes to its "Arrest and Control" learning unit to remove the training and use of the hold.Andrews adds that the school is in the process of changing its academy curriculum to align with the learning unit's changes.“Palomar took a stance, and we were successful,” Andrews said. “There are many other policing tactics which, when employed properly, can be productive. There is no need for this particular tactic.”He added that originally the restraint was to be a last resort tactic, but has gradually become a common move during arrests.Palomar Community College District Interim Superintendent and President Dr. Jack Kahn applauded the move, saying, "Palomar College is committed to training professionals, including police officers, who will serve and build up the community.
