A mysterious cigar-shaped object spotted tumbling through our solar system last year may have been an alien spacecraft sent to investigate Earth, astronomers from Harvard University have suggested. The object, nicknamed 'Oumuamua, meaning "a messenger that reaches out from the distant past" in Hawaiian, was first discovered in October 2017 by the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope in Hawaii.Since its discovery, scientists have been at odds to explain its unusual features and precise origins, with researchers first calling it a comet and then an asteroid, before finally deeming it the first of its kind: a new class of "interstellar objects."Now, a new paper by researchers at the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics raises the possibility that the elongated dark-red object, which is 10 times as long as it is wide and traveling at speeds of 196,000 mph, might have an "artificial origin.""'Oumuamua may be a fully operational probe sent intentionally to Earth vicinity by an alien civilization," they wrote in the paper, which has been submitted to the Astrophysical Journal Letters. The theory is based on the object's "excess acceleration," or its unexpected boost in speed as it traveled through and ultimately out of our solar system in January 2018."Considering an artificial origin, one possibility is that 'Oumuamua is a light sail, floating in interstellar space as a debris from an advanced technological equipment," wrote the paper's authors, suggesting that the object could be propelled by solar radiation. The paper, written by Abraham Loeb, professor and chair of astronomy, and Shmuel Bialy, a postdoctoral scholar, at the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, points out that comparable light-sails already exist on earth."Light-sails with similar dimensions have been designed and constructed by our own civilization, including the IKAROS project and the Starshot Initiative. The light-sail technology might be abundantly used for transportation of cargos between planets or between stars."In the paper, the pair theorize that the object's high speed and its unusual trajectory could be the result of it no longer being operational."This would account for the various anomalies of 'Oumuamua, such as the unusual geometry inferred from its light-curve, its low thermal emission, suggesting high reflectivity, and its deviation from a Keplerian orbit without any sign of a cometary tail or spin-up torques."'Oumuamua is the first object ever seen in our solar system that is known to have originated elsewhere. At first, astronomers thought the rapidly moving faint light was a regular comet or an asteroid that had originated in our solar system.Comets, in particular, are known to speed-up due to a process known as "outgassing," in which the sun heats up the surface of the icy comet, releasing melted gas. But 'Oumuamua didn't have a "coma," the atmosphere and dust that surrounds comets as they melt.Multiple telescopes focused on the object for three nights to determine what it was before it moved out of sight. 3063

A school bus driver's camera recorded the scary moment when another driver stopped in the middle of the Massachusetts Pike, exited his car and climbed onto the hood of the bus.Video recorded Tuesday shows a man forcing the bus to stop in the middle of the highway, then climb onto the vehicle's hood. The man got out right in the middle of the highway and he goes to the door of the bus.The bus driver does not let him in. So, he then goes back to the front and jumps right on the hood. The bus driver says the man was screaming that the windows on the bus were too dark."A man jumped on my bus going on the Mass. Turnpike, pulled me over in the middle lane and stopped the bus," said the bus driver."What did he say to you?" asked WCVB reporter John Atwater."His words were, 'Why are your windows dark?' I had the same reaction! I've got tons of stuff that shows people going through my bus, going through the red lights, and I think it's good to have it," said the driver.State police say they have identified the man who climbed onto the hood.No charges have been filed at this time.Courtesy of WCVB via CNN Newsource 1161

A new technology is coming to airports to help with passenger screening from home to plane. Denver International Airport will soon be the first to test Daon’s IdentityX platform. It creates a digital identity for each passenger that can be used at kiosks and e-gates, then help travelers schedule times to go through security and get to terminals. That digital identity, called Glide, will also include biometric data and be used for passengers to show their health status using a badge on their cell phone. Down the road, the platform could also mean touchless payments at stores and restaurants.“So what we're trying to do is allow people before they come to the airport, maybe for the first time or maybe for every time, to really begin to feel confident that they can control the time and space elements of their journey,” said Chris McLaughlin, Chief Operating Officer at Denver International Airport. The same technology can be used to improve safety for the thousands of staff and TSA officers that come and go from the airport every day. 1051

A mom from Kansas is trying to sort out how her son's Social Security number was used to rent a car, open bank accounts and credit cards in Milwaukee, especially since he's just 11-years-old.Wiesje Sammis said she recently got a confusing call from a Milwaukee County detective."They asked if had he rented a car? I was, of course, like, 'Ummm no, he's 11,'" said Sammis.Sammis said her son Terrelle Lewis's identity was stolen and his Social Security number was being used."I think it's kind of shocking. That you can do that these days," said Lewis.According to court documents, police found the suspect at a Walmart in West Milwaukee. He was drinking a bottle beer and walking aisles. When they asked him for ID he gave them a fake driver's license and a Social Security card with Lewis's number on it.Records show the suspect also rented a car back in January and never returned it. He also opened up multiple credit cards and bank accounts.Lewis's mother said police told her the man likely bought her son's Social Security number online. She thinks it was taken during a data breach of his health insurance company four years ago."'There's no way somebody could take a child's identity. There's just no way' is what I thought," said Sammis. Now she is worried others have his number as well."I think this will impact him long term," said Sammis. To protect children's identities, parents are encouraged to apply for a security freeze. Security freezes are available through one of the major credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. For more consumer information on child identity theft, visit the FTC's website.  1642

A man walks into an Ohio Little Caesars, buys a pizza and walks back out to his car.Happens every day. What does not happen every day is the man driving away on only three tires and getting busted for an OVI. According to Canton police, Joshua Milkovich, 28, was missing a tire as he drove his car around on Sunday night. Police say they got several calls from concerned citizens who were worried he had gotten into accident.Police found him on the 1900 block of Mount Vernon, where his car broke down.He was charged with an OVI and taken to Stark County Jail.  598
