SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A famous San Diego bike trail is open just in time for July 4. Wednesday, SANDAG opened a one-mile stretch of the newly-relocated and upgraded Rose Canyon Bike Path. The path is a segment of the Coastal Rail Trail that stretches along Interstate 5 from north Santa Fe Street to just north of State Route 52. SANDAG says the path will eventually connect to the future 44-mile Coastal Rail Trail, which will extend from Oceanside to Downtown San Diego. According to the agency, the Rose Canyon Bike Path is part of a Complete Corridor, running along the future Mid-Coast Trolley light rail line. 622

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A group of Uber and Lyft drivers hit San Diego roads Friday morning to tell everyone they passed to vote no on Proposition 22.Prop. 22 is a ballot measure that would make rideshare and delivery companies exempt from Assembly Bill 5, a new California law that classifies many "gig economy" workers as employees.AB 5 turns the 2018 state Supreme Court "Dynamex" decision into codified law. It says companies like Uber, Lyft and DoorDash have to classify their drivers as employees and not independent contractors under what's called the "ABC Test" of employment. That gives the drivers access to protections like minimum wage, unemployment insurance, time off and other protections not usually given to independent contractors.Prop. 22 would give the drivers some wage protection and health insurance subsidies, but not as much protection as AB 5."It strips us of all our rights," Lyft and Uber driver Tonje Ettesvoll said of Prop. 22. "We're talking unemployment, we're talking health benefits, we're talking sick days, family leave. If they win Proposition 22, all those things go out the window."Ettesvoll organized the car caravan, which went from the rideshare lot at San Diego International Airport to Lyft's San Diego headquarters on Morena Boulevard. About a dozen cars joined her on the road, decorated with signs and stickers urging people to vote no.At the end of the ride, Ettesvoll and other organizers gave out hand sanitizer and masks to drivers. They say Lyft and Uber don't provide those items, but still expect drivers to clean their cars between each passenger drop-off. Ettesvoll said that's another example of the companies putting profit over people.According to Ballotpedia, a website which tracks elections, Uber, Lyft, DoorDash and Postmates have spent 0 million combined to support Proposition 22, saying if it doesn't pass, they may have to shut down operations in California.Groups against Prop 22, mostly labor unions, have raised just under million.A court battle over the provisions of AB 5 has been going on all summer in San Francisco, with a judge recently granting an injunction to give the companies time to make a plan for compliance. Some drivers told ABC 10News they don't like AB 5 and plan to vote for Prop. 22. They worry the new rules would turn them into full-time employees and they'd lose some of their independence and ability to be their own boss.Ettesvoll and the drivers on Friday hope voters end the debate and force the companies' hands."They have had years to abide by the law," she said. "This isn't something new. That you have to pay your workers a minimum wage isn't new. That you have to have a certain amount of benefits for people isn't anything new. That if you're going to have independent contractors, we have to have some say in our work. That isn't new either." 2855

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Celebrity Cruise Line ship docked at the Port of San Diego Monday, pulling into the Embarcadero just before sunrise. More than 1,500 passengers were on board the "Eclipse," including Mali Lev-Ram and her husband. The couple started the cruise on March 1 in Buenos Aires. They were supposed to get off in Chile March 15, but the cruise was turned away because of concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. "It was frustrating, but everyone I have to say was very patient, we trusted that the crew are doing their best to do everything they can for us," said Lev-Ram.RELATED: San Diego issues health orders on cruise ships amid COVID-19San Diego County health officials said no one on board had shown symptoms of the virus, but precautions are being taken. Customs officers boarded the ship wearing masks. All passengers will go through a medical screening before going home to self-quarantine for fourteen days."We are very happy. My husband was so emotional to see San Diego, we were a little crying even, we were very happy," said Lev-Ram. 1063

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UCSD and Scripps Institution of Oceanography alumna Megan McArthur will head to space as the pilot for the SpaceX Crew-2 mission in early 2021, NASA announced this week. The Crew-2 flight will be the second SpaceX Crew Dragon flight to the International Space Station as part of NASA's commercial crew program.McArthur, who received her doctorate in oceanography from Scripps in 2002, traveled to space aboard the space shuttle Atlantis in 2009. She and her crew were part of a 12-day mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. McArthur operated the shuttle's robotic arm that grabbed and released the telescope, making her the last person to "touch" the telescope. She was born in Honolulu but considers California her home state. She holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from UCLA.The SpaceX Crew-2 flight will be her first trip to the International Space Station.Joining McArthur is NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough as mission commander with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Pesquet as mission specialists.McArthur is one of two Scripps Oceanography alumni who are astronauts. Alumna Jessica Meir returned from a visit to the International Space Station in April. Astronaut Kate Rubins also graduated from UC San Diego with a degree in biological sciences.Crew-2 is targeted to launch in spring 2021, following the successful completion of both NASA's SpaceX Demo-2 test flight mission -- which is expected to return to Earth on Sunday -- and the launch of NASA's SpaceX Crew-1 mission -- which is targeted for late September. The Crew-2 astronauts will remain aboard the space station for approximately six months as expedition crew members, along with three crewmates who will launch via a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. The increase of the full space station crew complement to seven members will allow NASA to effectively double the amount of science that can be conducted in space.NASA's commercial crew program is working with the American aerospace industry as companies develop and operate a new generation of spacecraft and launch systems capable of carrying crews to low-Earth orbit and the space station. A NASA statement said commercial transportation to and from the station will provide expanded utility, additional research time and broader opportunities for discovery on the orbital outpost. 2406
