URUMQI, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said Tuesday that ethnic unity was the "basic benefit" for all the people in Xinjiang.     "Ethnic unity is the basic benefit for the 21 million people of various ethnic groups in Xinjiang... and these people have a long tradition of loving and supporting each other," Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit told Xinhua in an interview in Urumqi Tuesday.     Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit, an ethnic Uygur, was born in 1942 in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. He joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1960 and was elected CPPCC National Committee vice chairman in 2008. "Ethnic unity is the basic benefit for the 21 million people of various ethnic groups in Xinjiang... and these people have a long tradition of loving and supporting each other," Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit told Xinhua here on Tuesday    "No matter whether in war or peace, people of Han and minority groups always had a strong emotional tie and they could not be separated from each other," he said.     Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit cited many heroic stories during the July5 riot in which people from Han and other ethnic groups risked their lives to save people from the violence.     According to media reports, an 81-year-old Uygur old man risked his life to save 18 people, and a Han boy named Li Huan saved more than 10 people and even captured a rioter.     "The loving relationship among us has gone through all kinds of weather and will never be destroyed by these ethnic separatists," Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit said.     He condemned the riot as an "extremely outrageous" crime organized by people who intentionally wanted to arouse ethnic conflicts and disturb social stability.     The unrest which occurred on July 5 in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang, resulted in at least 184 deaths and left 1,680 injured.     Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit said that since the founding of the New China, health care, education, science and technology in Xinjiang had developed rapidly.  

BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Rainstorms since early the week have swept a wide swathe of south China, leaving dozens people dead or missing and forcing hundreds of thousands to evacuate.     In Jiangxi Province, two people were killed, three more were missing and more than 100,000 have been evacuated following the heaviest rain this summer, local flood control authorities said. The rain damaged 178,000 hectares of crops, caused 8,231 houses to collapse, and incurred a direct economic loss of 1.31 billion yuan (191.7 million U.S. dollars). TAIPEI, May 31 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese mainland business delegation arrived in Taiwan Sunday to kick off a buying spree to expand trade ties and offset the effects of the global economic downturn.     The group, organized by the Mainland Association for Cross-Strait Economic and Trade Exchanges, comprised about 80 representatives of 35 companies, including IT and home appliance giants Lenovo, Haier, Changhong and ZTE.     The shopping list could include home appliances, machinery, textiles and foodstuffs manufactured on the island, said Li Shuilin, director of the association and delegation head.     The mainland businesses would hold talks with Taiwan firms in Taipei and Kaohsiung to learn more about their products and market potential in the mainland, Li said.     They would probably make some purchasing orders, although no exact plans had been announced, he added.     The delegation, the first of its kind, was warmly received on the island amid the mainland's repeated calls for collaboration across the Taiwan Strait to cope with the international economic downturn.     This marked a substantial step by the mainland to help boost investment in Taiwan and the purchase of Taiwan products, proposed by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in April, Li said.     The mainland announced last week that seven to nine procurement delegations to Taiwan would be organized from May to September to help develop the island economy during the global downturn.     The China Video Industry Association would organize a visit of leading mainland television producers on Monday to hammer out a planned 2.2-billion-U.S.-dollar contract for TV parts produced in Taiwan.     Also in June, tea merchants and fruit organizations would visit central and south Taiwan. In September, representatives of trading cooperatives from 11 provinces and cities, six industry associations and 13 agricultural products producers will visit the island.     Mainland telecommunications companies, including China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom, also plan purchasing visits the island.

BEIJING, May 12 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official has called on discipline chiefs of the Communist Party of China (CPC) at all levels to take the initiative of being self-regulatory and clean-handed.     He Guoqiang, secretary of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, made the remark when meeting the Party's discipline chiefs at county level in Beijing on Tuesday.     He, also a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, attached great importance to county-level discipline organs comprising the Party's discipline and inspection system.     The official called on the chiefs to conduct a determined and uncompromising fight against all corrupted officials and behaviors to defend the people's interests.     He urged Party committees and governments at all levels to improve the financial conditions, equipment and facilities of the county-level discipline organs for a better anti-corruption performance with the discipline inspectors.     More than 2,000 secretaries of discipline organs at county level throughout the country have been gathered in Beijing to attend a focused training course, the first of its kind in the history of the CPC's discipline work.     The training course, held in Party School of the CPC Central Committee, National School of Administration and training center of Supervision Ministry, has been aimed at improving their abilities to fight against corruption as well as maintain social stability.

BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhua) -- China and Kuwait signed five agreements here on Sunday in an effort to further the bilateral relations to a higher level.     The agreements covered fields of energy, finance, telecommunication, transportation and education, according a press release from the Chinese Foreign Ministry. However, the press release does not give details about the agreements, only emphasizing they are among the positive steps to push foreword the bilateral relations.     Chinese President Hu Jintao and visiting Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah witnessed the signing ceremony after they conferred on the bilateral ties and other issues of common concern.
