MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – More than 150 officers with the Minneapolis Police Department have started the process of filing physical and mental disability claims, with a majority saying they’re suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).The law firm representing many of the officers, Meuser, Yackley, and Rowland, made the announcement Friday, saying the events following the death of George Floyd have “pushed many officers to their breaking point.” Those events include the burning of the department’s third precinct.The law firm’s founder, Ron Meuser, Jr., wrote in a statement that many of the officers he represents were at the third precinct the day and night it was abandoned during the protests over Floyd’s death.“Officers were taking such extreme steps as writing final notes and texts to loved ones – fearful they wouldn’t make it home, and some saying they felt they needed to reserve their last bullet rather than being beaten to death,” wrote Meuser.The attorney says he’s seeing PTSD symptoms of officers with highly diminished capacity to live and socialize, extraordinary rates of divorce, and alcohol dependency to cope with their trauma.“It is an emotional crisis that cannot and should not continue,” wrote Meuser.The law firm says the number of officers claiming to have suffered PTSD over the past six weeks accounts for about 18% of the department’s 850-person force.“The men and women in public safety who give their heart and soul to serve Minneapolis and keep it safe deserve to have Minneapolis leaders to step up and supporting them,” wrote Meuser. “Instead of spending time plotting the dismantling of the force, let’s come together to improve community trust and work towards a safer city for all.”The city’s police department is facing intense scrutiny after now-former officer Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck for several minutes until the man lost consciousness and later died.Chauvin and three other officers involved have been fired and persistent protests across the country led prosecutors to swiftly charge them. NASA could make history on Tuesday as their spacecraft, OSIRIS-REx, will attempt to land on an ancient asteroid 200 million miles away from Earth.OSIRIS-REx launched in 2016. It arrived at the asteroid, named Bennu, in 2018 and it’s been mapping out the surface working to pick the best location to land ever since.The mission’s operations are headquartered at the University of Arizona.The mission will begin at 2:50 p.m. Arizona time on Tuesday. At 3:12 p.m., OSIRIS-REx will finally touch down on Bennu and collect a sample before heading back to Earth. Dr. Lori Glaze with NASA tells ABC15 the sample will allow researchers to study the ancient secrets of our solar system. She says Bennu also has a 1-in-2,700 chance of impacting Earth in about 150 years or so, so this mission can help researchers work to prevent that.“Helping us refine and reduce the uncertainties on Bennu’s orbit so we can better predict more precisely not only when it might intercept with Earth, but what the probability of that intersection is,” Dr. Glaze said. “So the mission's been critically important for refining Bennu’s orbit so we can help protect ourselves in the future.”Watch a live stream of the event in the player below. 1222

MONT BELVIEU, Texas — A Texas judge has ruled a school district’s hair policy is discriminatory after two Black students were suspended for their dreadlocks. According to KTRK-TV, the decision from the judge for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas came late Monday.The policy was at the center of controversy after a senior at Barbers Hill High School was suspended in January. District officials said it wasn’t about race or that dreadlocks weren’t allowed, just that his in particular were too long. The student was told he could not return to school or walk at graduation unless he cut his hair. He argued that his dreadlocks were part of his Trinidadian heritage.He and another student filed grievances on Jan. 27, followed by a lawsuit. Last month, the school board voted not to change the policy. 833

Multiple people were busy Monday morning in Fort Pierce rescuing baby sea turtles that were stuck in seaweed from the high surf and strong winds of Hurricane Irma.The rescue was occurring at 10 a.m. at Jetty Park. A man named Eric said he spoke with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, who told him to put wet sand in a bucket and collect the stranded turtles.    FWC originally said to put the turtles back into the water but later changed their mind.“Originally FWC told me to put them back into the water, but we noticed that they were just coming right back onto the shore because the waves are just too strong for these little creatures,” said Eric.He said when other people in the area saw what he was doing, they jumped in to help with the rescue.The group of people were frantically digging through a massive mound of seaweed with their bare hands to save as many turtles as possible.By 10 a.m., the group had rescued about 50 to 60 baby sea turtles and nine eggs that were not broken. Unfortunatly they found about 20 small turtles that did not survive Irma.FWC said they come by later to collect the turtles.  1181
