SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For the fourth consecutive year, the USS Champion has won a contest held between ships at Naval Base San Diego over which crew could put together the best decorations."It's just a great opportunity for the crew to really come together, enjoy some time not focusing on the day to day, but to really express themselves," said the ship's commanding officer, Lt. Commander Matthew Yokeley.The Champion, an Avenger-Class Minesweeper, was covered in decorations. Lights, bows, and bells lined the railings and were struck all the way to the top of the mast. Giant inflatables were mounted on the deck, along with a Christmas tree. The lights were synchronized to flash with a holiday music show.This is a big deal for us. Christmas lights are pretty competitive," said Petty Officer Pierce Cloninger. "We like to win. They don't call us Champion for nothing." 880

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Following a heated battle over new regulations for short-term vacation rentals Wednesday, the San Diego City Council approved new regulations in a 6-2 vote.The new rules will go into effect July 2019.The rules, which were based on a plan by Mayor Kevin Faulconer, adopt the city’s first license-based system to manage the rentals, charge cost-recoverable fees to administer licenses and enforce code violations, establish a “Good Neighbor” policy to preserve neighborhood quality of life, hire additional staff to respond to complaints about nuisance properties, and implement a per-night fee that would generate funding for affordable housing projects.RELATED: San Diego City Council approves new rules on short-term rentalsAlthough the plan initially called for homeowners to be allowed two licenses for a primary and secondary home, the council later amended the provision before the plan passed its first vote in July.Faulconer’s proposal was changed to allow a host to be issued a license for a primary residence and a dwelling on the same land as the primary residence.Faulconer also had a provision in his plan allowing no limitations on the number of licenses available to hosts within Mission Beach when it was introduced in June. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Firefighters in San Diego are rallying around a beloved firefighter suddenly in the fight of his life, after a cancer diagnosis."His nickname is 'Big Joe,' because he's bigger than life," said firefighter Russell Castillo.Castillo says Engineer/Paramedic Joe Odom, 49, is known as the light switch in a room."His smile lights up a room. His energy lights up a room. He makes everyone feel valued ... It’s our time to return that love," said Castillo.It’s been an emotional time for the 23-year veteran of San Diego Fire-Rescue. He recently discovered some swelling in his groin area. Doctors diagnosed him with lymphoma, cancer that begins in the immune system. He’s awaiting more testing for a prognosis.It comes as Odom’s wife Lisa battles serious health issues, including a lung condition and lupus."She’s giving me inspiration for what’s she’s been through," said Odom.Lisa is immunocompromised. Odom, as a paramedic on the front lines, has been trying to keep her safe, while still serving the community during a pandemic."It's scary for a lot of folks. I just want to be there, anyway I know how ... Just feel like I need be out there," said Odom.A help now on pause as he begins his cancer battle, and he’ll be far from alone."I feel like I'm in this dark places but God is bringing all these people to me," said Odom.Firefighters from Odom’s Station 26 in Oak Park have helped organize a fundraiser, including a meal train, along with countless messages of support."It's our time to show how much we love him," said Castillo."I'm speechless of the support I’m getting.
