In a heartbreaking Facebook post, a Maryland animal shelter announced they found a puppy with its ears cut off tied to a tree in Baltimore. BARCS say they got a call saying someone had found two dogs tied to a tree and several other puppies in an empty lot. When the officer arrived, they found one of the puppies was bleeding from the head and the other puppies were for sale. The puppies were immediately taken to BARCS where they were seen by a vet. They named the injured dog Claude and determined that his ears were removed using poor instruments, like household objects, leaving him with tissue damage, pain, and infection. Claude is only 10 weeks old and BARCS says he is trying to do normal puppy things, but cannot because of the pain. He received emergency surgery but the veterinarians had to remove untreated infected tissue, so he lost even more of his ear structure. BARCS is now asking for money so they can continue to help Claude so he can find a loving home and recover. House Democrats overwhelmingly picked Nancy Pelosi to be their nominee for House speaker on Wednesday at a closed-door meeting, bringing the long-time Democratic leader one step closer to reclaiming the gavel when Democrats take control of the House of Representatives in the new year.Pelosi was nominated as speaker by House Democrats by a 203-32 vote, according to attendees in the room. Three ballots were blank. One was absent.A small, but vocal, faction of Democrats have been attempting to derail Pelosi's run for speaker, but she has succeeded in winning over a number of critics in recent days and was expected to easily win the nomination since it required only a majority of House Democrats. The make-or-break moment for Pelosi isn't expected to come until January, when the full House holds a final floor vote to elect the speaker.House Democrats are also holding elections on Wednesday for positions lower in the leadership hierarchy.The first election to be decided was for the position of Democratic caucus chair. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York was elected to the post, making him the No. 5-ranked Democrat next Congress. The vote was close, 123-113. He defeated Rep. Barbara Lee, who would have been the first African-American woman in Democratic leadership.At 48, Jeffries is relatively young compared to the rest of the caucus and a rising star in the Democratic Party. Winning the position of caucus chair will elevate him further in the party's hierarchy and give him an opportunity to wield more power and influence. With Rep. Jim Clyburn's expected ascent to the majority whip position, Jeffries' win means that two of the top five leadership positions in the Democratic caucus will be held by African-American members.Lee, who is 72, said on Wednesday that she felt there were "institutional barriers" in her way."You feel some disappointment only with the institutional barriers that I recognized that were out there during this campaign. I'm really disappointed in that, knowing this was an uphill battle," she said.Asked if she felt ageism and sexism were at place, Lee said yes. Companies like Google and Facebook are already sharing user information.However, sharing health information is something new.“I don't think when people are buying thermometers that they necessarily really know that these devices can not only collect a lot of data about them, but that they're under current regulations they're allowed to share that data,” Duber-Smith explains.  Kinsa, the company that makes the smart thermometer, says this so called "illness data" doesn't have any identifying personal data when shared with other companies. But Kinsa’s thermometer, as well as Amazon’s new patent that could enable Alexa to detect cold symptoms, are just two of many technologies raising questions about privacy.“I think when it comes to personal health, people might be willing to give up a little bit more privacy if they perceive that it's going to help them live longer and help them live healthier lives, or maybe save their lives in some instances,” Duber-Smith says.Still, Duber-Smith believes how much is disclosed should be up to the consumer.  1640

In a recent tweet, Elon Musk said his Hyperloop tunnel for rapid transportation is nearly complete.The high-speed tunnel he is building is expected to open Dec.10, according to Musk's Twitter page. It will run under Hawthone, California, near Los Angeles, and transport people between Dodger Stadium and nearly metro stations in less than 4 minutes, according to foxbusiness.com.Musk is making no guarantees about the work his tunneling company, called Boring Company, is doing. On the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, he said it started as a joke because he hates Los Angeles traffic so much, but then he decided to realize the idea.Musk doesn't see his version of Hyperloop involving stations such as current commuter rails have.
