SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- America’s Freedom Bell, which has been traveling across the country for years, officially has a permanent home in San Diego.Wednesday, the bell was unveiled at its new home at the Veterans Museum in Balboa Park. Before that, it was kept in a storage facility in between travels.Richard Rovsek, a Rancho Santa Fe resident and founder of the Spirit of Liberty Foundation, drew up a design for the bell on a napkin during a meal. 72 hours later he learned it would become a reality.Rovsek created the bell to give Americans a chance to ring it and honor the men and women who served our nation. Five million Americans have rung the bell so far.“It’s closure for families,” said Rovesek.The bell was cast on June 6, 2013 with full military honors on the 69th anniversary of D-Day. It has traveled to Independence Hall, Arlington Cemetery, Pearl Harbor, Normandy Beach and more. It will continue to travel occasionally, but will forever call San Diego home. On the bell are the timeless words “Honor Our Armed Forces Past, Present and Future.” It includes emblems for every branch of the military and contains 11 pounds of steel from the World Trade Center.Wednesday, the Spirit of Liberty Foundation and The Veterans Museum at Balboa Park also announced the creation of “America’s Patriotic Honor Roll” which will include the names of more than 100 million veterans who have served since 1776. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two fires sparked Saturday afternoon in East County, in addition to a thunderstorm in Pine Valley, created dicey conditions for firefighters.Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots said the humidity made a huge difference, "the monsoonal moisture the stickiness has been good because it's helped keep our fires small," slowing the spread of flames.The Bratton Fire sparked in Lawson Valley around 1:30 p.m. and scorched 4 acres. Then around 2:10 p.m., the Sloane Fire started burning in Dehesa, blackening 18 acres.Both were knocked down quickly."We hope that people don't get complacent that we've hit these fires very aggressively and it's worked out," Shoots said.He said if we didn't have the humidity we would be in trouble, "there's a lot of fuel that comes with a good winter so that grass crop is all cured out and ready to burn."Shoots said they were keeping their eye on the thunderstorm in Pine Valley.The National Weather Service reported a severe thunderstorm warning with quarter-sized hail and gusts up to 60 miles per hour."We knew it wasn't going to be to the extent that the north saw when the storms rolled through but it was still definitely a potential concern," Shoots said.Looking forward, Shoots says we need to be very careful, "San Diego and a good chunk of California is sitting at a higher potential for wildfire activity in October-November."He advises creating defensible space around your home not only to protect your home but protect your family if you can't escape in time.Shoots said he hopes firefighters are able to get a handle on the fires in Northern California and stay safe.He said 96% of all Cal Fire engines are working, which shows how extreme this fire season is.More than half of Cal Fire San Diego's resources have been sent up north to help, including 32 engines. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Tourists and locals alike can enjoy one of San Diego's most famous landmarks Saturday for free in honor of National Public Lands Day.The National Park Service is offering free entry at Cabrillo National Monument, and other U.S. landmarks, as part of its "fee-free" days throughout the year. The last free admission day of the year is Nov. 11 in honor of Veterans Day.Not only that, but Saturday also marks the day when Cabrillo first sailed into San Diego Bay in 1542.RELATED: Six great San Diego spots where you can unwindOn Saturday, guests can also learn about how 16th century explorers navigated with such accurate results, or go inside the Fort Rosecrans bunkers at the site that date back to World War II. Living history re-enactors will be in attendance to walk guests through the Age of Exploration.Films are also shown daily at the monument covering Cabrillo, the lighthouse, and nearby aquatic life. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Victims in a vehicle vandalism spree in Lakeside are hopeful for a break in the case, after the teen vandals apparently recorded and shared their exploits.From a broken side mirror and a cracked sunroof to the green-colored graffiti, Stephanie Starkey's Tuesday night discovery was painful."I cried. It hurt. I love my car," said Starkey.Starkey says she had taken 2011 Hyundai Sonata into a mechanic, who parked it on Woodside Avenue. Along that street, at least three other vehicles were spray-painted and one car was keyed. Some of that vandalism played out on cellphone video. Deputies say they're looking over an 8-second video, which has been shared on Instagram, showing a teen smashing Starkey's car several times with a skateboard. In the video, several voices can be heard laughing. "Can't even describe the feeling of emptiness. A hurt, broken feeling. I'm getting ready for a new job. Now I have no way to get to work ... It's obviously something they get an adrenaline rush out of ... Disgusted. Kids with nothing better to do," said Starkey.Deputies say they have not yet made an arrest.
