ISTANBUL, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's four-nation Eurasian tour has scored marked achievements and further deepened China-Europe cooperation, said Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, who described the visit as "a great complete success."Wen paid official visits to Greece, Belgium, Italy and Turkey and attended the 8th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) and the 13th China-EU summit in the eight days from Oct. 2-9.Yang said Premier Wen's visit is aimed at boosting mutual trust through dialogues and promoting common development through cooperation.During his eight-day visit, Wen took part in more than 70 meetings, events and activities and paid a brief visit to Berlin as a guest of German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the midst of his stay in Brussels.In addition to talking with leaders of the four countries and the European Union (EU), Wen also met with people from the local cultural, industrial and business circles and held joint press conferences or issued joint statements together with the leaders of the countries.Premier Wen vividly presented China's policies and positions, trying different angles, Yang said, which had further improved bilateral relations between China and the four countries and deepened China-Europe ties in the new historic period.

THE HAGUE, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Xue Hanqin was sworn in Monday as a judge of the Hague-based International Court of Justice (ICJ), becoming the first Chinese woman to get the job.Another female judge, Joan E. Donoghue from the United States, assumed office together with Xue."It is the first time in the court's history that two female judges will serve simultaneously," the ICJ said in a statement.Almost all ICJ judges had been male with only one exception -- British Dame Rosalyn Higgins, who served on the court from 1995 to 2009.Xue, a veteran Chinese diplomat and an expert of international law, was elected to the ICJ with all 15 votes in the Security Council and a majority of votes in the UN General Assembly in June. She is the third Chinese judge in the Court."More and more women take active part in the major international justice organizations, which marks the improvement of civilization," Xue told Xinhua.Xue is no stranger to the Dutch city. She used to serve as Chinese ambassador in The Hague."What is remarkable about the two new judges is not just that they will bring down the average age of the members of the ICJ," Dr. Olivier Ribbelink, senior researcher at T.M.C. Asser Institute commented, "but also, strangely enough, that they are women.""Although it may be too early to say, perhaps their nomination forebodes a new attitude towards the ICJ and international law," Ribbelink added.Shortly after the swearing in ceremony, Xue and Donoghue joined their colleagues to start public hearings of a case concerning application of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination between Georgia and Russia."More than a dozen cases are on trial now and all the judges have a lot of work to do," which shows that most governments attach more and more importance to the ICJ, said Xue, who turns 55 on Wednesday."This will benefit the development of international law and bring profound influence to the international society," she added.Donoghue, a former legal adviser in the U.S. Department of State, was elected to the ICJ on Sept. 9.The ICJ, the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, has 15 judges who are each elected to a nine-year term of office and may be re-elected. DALIAN, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Sunday called on the young in Russia and China to pass on the friendship forged during World War II.Medvedev made the call in a meeting Sunday morning with more than 20 veteran Chinese and Russian soldiers who participated in China's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945), part of WWII.The Russian leader, who arrived in the northeast China's port city of Dalian Sunday morning, first laid flowers at a monument commemorating Soviet Union war martyrs.In the following meeting with Chinese and Russian veterans, Medvedev said Russians and Chinese forged profound friendship in their joint fight against the Nazis, and such friendship constituted the solid foundation for the relationship between the two countries.The Russian President thanked Russian and Chinese veterans for their contributions to peace.He also thanked China for renovating the memorial, which was one of more than 70 memorials commemorating Soviet Union war martyrs throughout China. All those memorials had been refurbished to mark the 65th anniversary of the victory of WWII.Dalian was the first stop of Medvedev's three-day visit to China. This was also Medvedev's second state visit to the country since he assumed presidency in May 2008.Later Sunday, Medvedev flew to Beijing to continue his state visit to China.During his stay in Beijing, Medvedev will hold talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao and call on other Chinese leaders, including top legislator Wu Bangguo and Premier Wen Jiabao.Medvedev will also travel to east China's metropolis of Shanghai, where, on the next day, he will meet with Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping and attend events marking the Russia Day at the ongoing World Expo, which runs from May 1 to Oct. 31.

ZHENGZHOU, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- A moderate earthquake that hit central China's Henan Province Sunday afternoon levelled 24 houses and left 12 students injured, local officials said early Monday morning.The quake, measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale and with a hypocenter depth of 8 kilometers, truck Zhoukou City at 4:58 p.m., according to the China National Seismological Network.Twenty four houses in Taikang County collapsed while 12 students in a middle school were injured, who are currently in hospital.In Fugou County, about 40 houses were reported to have cracks or other damages.Tremor was felt across eastern Henan, including provincial capital Zhengzhou City.

BRUSSELS, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- China expected an early resumption of the six-party talks to ease tensions and resolve the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here on Tuesday.All parties should make joint efforts to ease tensions between the south and the north on the peninsula and strive to resume the six-party talks at an early date, said Wen while meeting South Korean President Lee Myung-bak on the sidelines of the eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit in Brussels."This is in the fundamental interests of all parties involved and is conducive to peace and stability in the region," he said.The six-party talks, a multilateral mechanism designed to peacefully denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, were launched in 2003. The talks involve China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States.Speaking of the upcoming Group of 20 (G20) Seoul Summit, slated for Nov. 11-12, Wen said it was of great significance for boosting the world economic recovery, adding that China would support South Korea in seeking positive outcomes at the meeting.Wen said China regards South Korea as a friendly neighbor and an important partner. It also cherished the hard-won mutual understanding and trust between the two countries, believing the bilateral ties could withstand tests and continue to develop.China would also work with South Korea to boost cooperation in East Asia, Wen added.Lee appreciated China's support for Seoul G20 summit, saying his country would keep working with China to improve bilateral ties and play an active role in safeguarding peace and stability as well as deepening cooperation within the region.
