SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An advisory committee made up of medical experts met Thursday virtually and recommended that the FDA authorize the Pfizer vaccine for emergency use for Americans 16 and older.The vote was 17 to 4.Hospitals across the San Diego County are preparing their staff and most vulnerable patients for the rollout of the vaccine. They are in the first groups of people to be vaccinated.The county expects to get 28,275 doses of the Pfizer vaccine next week if it gets FDA approval. The initial shipment of doses is not likely enough to meet the large demand said Dr. Davey Smith, the Chief of infectious diseases and Global Public Health at UC San Diego Health."There probably won't be enough for the frontline workers, so we even triage between the frontline workers. So who has the most contact in terms of emergency room workers, nursing staff, those on the front desk, those are the people who should and will get it first, all across the institution," Smith saidThe vaccine is expected at a time when COVID-19 infections are on the rise, and ICUs are filling up."We have hospital beds available, and ICU beds available," Smith said. "If we hit 100 percent in one unit, we're going to open up something else. We have other outside facilities with tents. We thought through this, through every single scenario. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego professor is one of 55 people to make up California’s Electoral College for the 2020 election. Peter Bolland is the Chair of the Philosophy and Humanities Department at Southwestern College. He’s been at the school for 30 years and during that time taught Ammar Campa-Najjar, who is the person who selected him to become an elector.California gets 55 electors because of the 53 congressional districts and two senators. Electors are chosen by the party’s nominee who won the popular vote. Campa-Najjar got the most votes for Congress’ 50th District primary election in 2020, making him the person to choose the elector. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After nearly two decades of delays and setbacks, San Ysidro community members celebrated the completion of a million major road reconstruction project Monday.For years the half-mile stretch of Old Otay Mesa Road in between San Ysidro High and San Ysidro Middle Schools lacked many safety features to protect the students who walk to and from school.An unfinished dirt path was used as a sidewalk with no fence to keep students away from oncoming vehicle traffic, no street lights or proper signage and no barriers to keep pedestrians from slipping down a steep canyon.After three years, the stretch of road now includes the safety features the community had been asking for for years. The roadway was widened and realigned, sidewalks and bike lanes were added, there's now a retaining wall, signage and lighting.The City of San Diego says the project took so long to complete after the initial groundbreaking because of the rough terrain crews had to work through.San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced reforms to overhaul the City’s infrastructure program back in 2015. He says that increased funding each year and helped speed up high priority projects, like the one on Old Otay Mesa Road. This project was one of more than 60 neighborhood projects that were fully funded after Faulconer’s reforms went into effect."Parents have a peace of mind knowing that their kids have a safe path to and from school," said Faulconer at a news conference Monday.The half-mile stretch of Old Otay Mesa Road, which was closed off to traffic for several years, officially reopened on Monday. 1612

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A shark advisory is being issued Tuesday after witnesses reported seeing a five-foot-long shark near Black's Beach. According to Mónica Mu?oz with San Diego Fire-Rescue, the advisory is in place from the Mushroom House north to Bathtub Rock, also known as Flat Rock. “Some witnesses reported seeing a shark of about five feet in length which does not reach the threshold of a significant threat. However, the number of witnesses and the feeding behavior observed influenced the lifeguards’ decision to issue the advisory,” Mu?oz said. Just after 12:30 p.m., a group of 25 surfers got out of the water at Black's Beach after reportedly seeing a shark eating a sea lion. Another group of people reported similar information to a lifeguard. In the same area, Mu?oz says lifeguards witnessed a large sea lion eating a fish. The department says there were either two separate sightings in the area, or witnesses all saw a sea lion feeding on a fish, but mistook it for a shark. “We are acting out of an abundance of caution,” Mu?oz added. Lifeguards are conducting active patrols in the area to let people know what witnesses saw. Mu?oz says lifeguards are advising against water activity; however, the water is not closed to people who choose to enter. Signs will also be posted in the area. 1316
