SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A teen in San Diego has written a children's book, which she hopes can help in the fight against cancer.Sophia Namazy, 14, wrote "Pigtails, Ponytails, and Fairytales" after seeing her little sister wake up every morning with messy hair. In the book, a pair of fairies come at night and play with it. Sophia says it's loosely based on her sister, Poppy."Her hair was really crazy and frizzy in the morning," says Sophia. "So every morning it would be like that, and I would sketch about it. And I thought I might as well make it into a book."Now that it's published, she's decided to donate all the money from sales to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.Namazy picked that location because it's where her twin brother, Max, goes every year for treatment.Max has a rare blood disorder called Schwachman-Diamond syndrome. His body doesn't produce enough white blood cells."I want other kids to know they're not alone, and they're not going through this alone," Sophia says."I'm really proud of Sophia, writing a book," says Max. "It just makes me happy that she's writing a book for me, to me, and helping support the cancer institute."Their mother, Jennifer Namazy, says the book has helped the family support each other."It's very emotional, but it really helps us all think about how a medical disorder in a family can affect everybody," she says. "We're taking what could be negative and making it a positive and helping other kids. That is really the most important message."The book is available on Amazon. 1545

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Aaron Juarez sat stone-faced as a public defender tried to convince a South Bay judge he's not a flight risk; especially not to Mexico. The deputy district attorney says Juarez, 20, is a gang member recently sentenced to probation on a firearms conviction. The judge ordered him held without bail for violating his probation, but he's wanted in Tijuana for allegedly murdering his stepmom. "They used to have a good relationship before, but after he starts with his drug problems and his gang problems, she was kind of, scared," said Erika Gonzalez, the victim's sister.RELATED: Man suspected of killing, burying stepmother in Tijuana backyard may be in U.S.After getting an anonymous tip, the family of Fernanda Gonzalez Serrano found her body buried in the backyard of her home in Tijuana last month. She'd been shot in the head. They'd been searching for her for weeks. Around the time she disappeared, Gonzalez' husband showed up at a hospital in San Diego with a gunshot wound. He declined to talk with the media Monday afternoon. "It really hurts that they can support someone like that. Even my sister's husband was here supporting the murder of my sister and that really hurts me," said Gonzalez. RELATED: Man suspected of killing stepmother found in Tijuana backyard arrestedThe family's attorney says it could be at least 60 days before Juarez is sent back to Mexico to face murder charges.Gonzalez' sister says she'll keep fighting."She was a really good sister, she was our older sister. She was always caring about the family, and she was the one who was always putting our family together, and now she's not here." Chula Vista Police say they arrested Juarez after he showed up to a meeting his probation officer last week with drugs on him. 1784

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Texas company has been awarded a contract to erect nearly 30 miles of fencing along California's border with Mexico.U.S. Customs and Border Protection awarded 7 million in construction contracts to Texas-based construction company SLSCO. The contracts include up to 14 miles of secondary wall and up to 15 miles of primary pedestrian replacement wall in California within the San Diego, Yuma, and El Centro Sectors. The 15-mile primary pedestrian replacement wall will include the installation of a new, 30-foot steel bollard wall: About 11 miles in Calexico, three miles in Tecate, and one mile in Andrade. According to CBP, these areas represent areas where wall replacement has been a priority. Construction for that 6 million project is slated to begin in July 2019.The secondary wall project is a 1 million contract and will include up to 14 miles of the same 30-foot steel bollard wall adjacent to San Diego's primary fence replacement project that is currently under construction. Construction of that project is projected to begin February 2019.SLSCO has already worked on border construction earlier this year, constructing new steel fencing in Border Field State Park. The two projects are a part of President Trump's "Border Security and Immigration Enforcement Improvements" executive order, which calls for a contiguous wall to be built along the southern U.S. border with Mexico, according to CBP. 1447

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – An annual toy giveaway for San Diego military families looked different this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, but the reason for the event remains the same. For this year’s Operation Holiday Joy, the San Diego Armed Services YMCA chose hundreds of local military families who needed a little extra help this holiday season. On Wednesday, at the Murphy Canyon Chapel on Santo Road, the YMCA handed out boxes of gift-wrapped toys, and even bicycles, to more than 1,000 kids.Families were given books, a mini Christmas tree, and a gift card.Tim Ney, executive director of the San Diego Armed Services YMCA, said that now more than ever it’s important to support military families, as they too must deal with the additional challenges brought on by the pandemic.“Spouse employment is 30 percent, it’s really high. The online education and we’re doing the Achievement Academy where we’re taking the kids during the day. And doing the online learning, then we do STEM activities with them afterwards,” said Ney.It’s a little bit of extra help these military families are extremely thankful for.Emily, who is a military wife, told ABC 10News, “We’re so grateful and we’re thankful and blessed that everyone is so generous to give military families support, especially during this pandemic. This COVID … it’s really a hard year, so it’s really a big help for the kids and the parents.” 1411
