The US Food and Drug Administration approved a drug to return sexual desire to some women with low libido, the agency said Friday. The drug, bremelanotide, sold under the brand name Vyleesi by AMAG Pharmaceuticals, is an injection to be taken before sex. It's intended to treat women who are premenopausal and have hypoactive sexual desire disorder, where a lack of interest in sex may cause significant distress in a woman's life.It will be available in September, and the company has not yet determined pricing or reimbursement information, according to AMAG spokeswoman Sarah Connors."Most women who come into my office have no idea that there's this condition ... and that they are one of millions," said Sheryl Kingsberg, division chief of Behavioral Medicine at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. Kingsberg was involved in the drug's clinical trials and has served as a paid consultant for the companies responsible for its marketing and development, AMAG and Palatin Technologies.Kingsberg, a clinical psychologist, said that "the impact of sexual dysfunction on a woman's self-esteem, on her body image, on her self-confidence and on her relationship is profound."Experts say the diagnosis is the most common type of sexual dysfunction among women, estimated to affect between 1308

Travel to Cuba has become more difficult -- and more confusing -- for US citizens and travelers subject to American jurisdiction.Cruise ships will no longer be allowed to sail to the Caribbean island, according to a Trump administration announcement Tuesday, and the industry is scrambling to understand the full implications of the policy change.Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement that the company is "closely monitoring these recent developments and any resulting impact to cruise travel to Cuba. We will communicate to our guests and travel partners as additional information becomes available."Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines announced that it is changing itineraries for June 5 and June 6 sailings that were scheduled to go to Cuba. The cruise line also said it is still evaluating the impact of the announcement.Several other cruise companies did not immediately reply to CNN's request for comment.Confusion surrounding the ban is palpable among cruise companies, travel websites and passengers with tickets to Cuba.Erica Silverstein, a senior editor at cruise review site Cruise Critic says the company is "in a holding pattern, waiting on next steps as cruise lines work to decipher what today's announcement means for their specific products."As far as ticketed passengers go, Silverstein says they are fielding questions on what the ban means for people who've paid in full or who are waiting to make final payments on planned trips to Cuba."It's worth noting that cruise lines are able to swap itineraries relatively quickly. We see it often during inclement weather, or in the wake of disruption in particular regions," Silverstein explains. "While nothing is definitive right now, if the lines are mandated to cancel sailings to Cuba, we'll likely see changes in the form of itinerary adjustments."The Trump administration policy change also eliminates group people-to-people travel (educational and cultural exchanges of a non-academic nature) as an approved sub-category of travel for Americans. The Treasury Department in a statement clarified that "certain group people-to-people educational travel that previously was authorized will continue to be authorized where the traveler had already completed at least one travel-related transaction (such as purchasing a flight or reserving accommodation) prior to June 5, 2019."JetBlue, United Airlines and Southwest Airlines have released statements saying they are reviewing the changes and intend to comply with the new rules.Under former President Barack Obama, rules around travel to Cuba were loosened, making it easier for individual Americans to comply with certain approved categories of travel without a formal application and approval process.President Trump tightened those rules in November 2017, only allowing people-to-people travel in groups traveling under the supervision of a US entity."That sub-category of travel has been eliminated, but there is a grandfathering provision that basically allows US travelers that have, for example, booked a flight or booked rooms and were contemplating doing a people-to-people trip, they are allowed to complete it," said Pedro Freyre, a partner and chair of the international practice at national law firm Akerman, which has cruise lines and airlines among its clients."But that doesn't align with shutting down the ability of the cruises to go in," Freyre said. It's that misalignment that has cruise lines scrambling to figure out how the new policies will impact their operations. And it leaves passengers booked on upcoming sailings in limbo. 3578

The Trump administration wants to tighten the rules governing who qualifies for food stamps, which could end up stripping more than 3 million people of their benefits. The Agriculture Department issued a proposed rule Tuesday that curtails so-called broad-based categorical eligibility, which makes it easier for Americans with somewhat higher incomes and more savings to participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, the formal name for food stamps. It is the administration's latest step to clamp down on the food stamps program, which covers 38 million Americans, and other public assistance services. It wants to require more poor people to work for SNAP benefits, and it is looking to change the way the poverty threshold is calculated, a move that could strip many low-income residents of their federal benefits over time.Broad-based categorical eligibility allows states to streamline the food stamps application process for folks who qualify for certain benefits under the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program. Some 40 states, plus the District of Columbia, use this option, which lets them eliminate the asset test and raise one of the income thresholds.Republicans have long argued that this expanded eligibility option is a "loophole" that permits those with higher incomes and assets to get public assistance. GOP lawmakers have tried to limit it several times -- including in last year's farm bill, though it didn't make it into the final version. The proposed USDA rule is expected to save .5 billion a year."For too long, this loophole has been used to effectively bypass important eligibility guidelines," said Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, who pointed out on a call with reporters that a millionaire in Minnesota recently enrolled through the option to highlight the problems with it. "That is why we are changing the rules, preventing abuse of a critical safety net system, so those who need food assistance the most are the only ones who receive it."Consumer advocates, however, say that the option helps low-income working Americans get the help they need. They still must meet the disposable income threshold for the food stamp program, though they can have a higher gross income (before deductions such as child care costs are taken into account). The option is "an opportunity-oriented policy to promote work and promote savings," said Stacy Dean, vice president for food assistance at the left-leaning Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. 2518
