They call it "The Game." But one of the fiercest rivalry college football games will have to wait a few more weeks due to the massive Camp Fire burning in Northern California. Due to the poor air quality in the Bay Area from the Camp Fire, Saturday's Stanford/California football game has been postponed until Dec. 1. The game will take place one day after the Pac 12 championship game, but both teams have already been eliminated from contention. As of Friday, the Camp Fire has killed at least 63, and hundreds are missing. The game, which was going to be held on California's Berkley campus, is just one of many college sporting events being postponed this weekend due to poor air quality. "We have been carefully tracking air quality in Berkeley and the Bay Area over the past week, relying on the best data and guidance available to us from medical and environmental experts," California's Athletic Director Knowlton said. "The forecasts we have received show a minimal chance of the improvement necessary to hold the game on Saturday. While we would have preferred to play the Big Game on its scheduled date, once we realized that air quality would likely not return to acceptable levels, we made the decision to postpone for the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches, gameday staff, students, band and spirit groups, alumni and fans."Berkley is located roughly 150 miles from Paradise, which was the epicenter of the Camp Fire. 1481

There's a new way to do contact tracing in the works and it could make a difference for health care providers during flu season.Vibrent Health just got a contract with major health institutions to develop the platform.Part of the idea is for users to enter their symptoms and find out if they're more likely to have the flu or COVID-19.“Health care facilities do get bombarded with perhaps people thinking that they have COVID when they just had flu, so the idea is how do you help the health care organizations to reduce some of the burden,” said Praduman Jain, founder and CEO of Vibrent Health. The technology is designed to be embedded in other apps that organizations and intuitions already use, like a university application for students.“So, make it easy for people and don't try to change their behavior,” said Jain. “They are already using certain applications that this can become a part of.”The app uses Wi-Fi networks to find out if you may have been close to someone with the virus. It could help cut some contact tracing work for public health departments. Instead of calling everyone that may have come in contact with the virus, the app can report that information.“There are only so many people, so many human beings, so many people that public health departments can hire to do that contact tracing, so technology becomes really important,” said Jain.Development is still in its early stages. Right now, the focus is on fine-tuning the algorithms to evolve along with changing data on the coronavirus.Broader testing is expected in the first few months of 2021. 1585
Three UCLA basketball players -- including LiAngelo Ball, brother of Lakers guard Lonzo Ball and son of Big Baller Brand founder LaVar Ball -- could be facing significant prison time if convicted of shoplifting in China, according to a report Tuesday. The trio has been released on bail, Sports Illustrated reported. On Tuesday, ESPN reported Ball and fellow UCLA freshmen Cody Riley and Jalen Hill were arrested in UCLA on charges of shoplifting. UCLA is in China to play its season-opening game against Georgia Tech in Shanghai on Friday."The players are being questioned about stealing from a Louis Vuitton store that is located next to the team's hotel in Hangzhou, where the Bruins had been staying before moving on to Shanghai on Wednesday," ESPN's Jeff Goodman reported.Yahoo Sports contacted a lawyer familiar with the Chinese legal system who said each player could face 3 to 10 years in prison if convicted of shoplifting.Another individual familiar with Chinese law told Yahoo Sports that "Chinese prosecutors enjoy a 99.2 percent conviction rate."Ball, a 6-foot-5 shooting guard, followed in his brother Lonzo's footsteps by committing to play college basketball at UCLA. Lonzo was selected by the Lakers with the second overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. 1310
Thousands of elevator permits in San Diego County are out of date, according to the Department of Industrial Relations. In San Diego and Imperial Counties, a DIR spokesperson said there are 12,541 elevator permits issued. Of those, 6,932 are expired. DIR spokesperson Frank Polizzi said there is no penalty for expired permits, “but a unit should not be running if it has been tagged out of service for a maintenance/safety reason.”Team 10 visited several elevators in downtown San Diego and found there was no permit displayed in the elevator at all—including an elevator at Horton Plaza and one operated by the City of San Diego. Polizzi said there are other reasons a displayed permit could be expired, besides the elevator being out of compliance. The owner could be waiting for a Cal/OSHA permit inspection or they have not posted the most updated permit. 868
