YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. — Rock climber Emily Harrington has become the first woman, and fourth person, to free-climb the Golden Gate route on Yosemite National Park’s granite wall in a single day.The 34-year-old began to scale 3,000-foot El Capitan early Wednesday. The San Francisco Chronicle says Harrington reached the top in 21 hours, 13 minutes and 51 seconds, despite banging her head on the granite wall at one point.Free climbers don't use ropes to ascend, only to catch them if they fall.Harrington posted about her accomplishment on Instagram over the weekend.“I never believed I could actually free climb El Cap in a day when I first set the goal for myself,” she wrote in a caption. “It didn’t seem like a realistic objective for me. I didn’t have the skills, fitness, or risk profile to move so quickly over such a large piece of stone. But I chose it exactly for that reason. Impossible dreams challenge us to rise above who we are now to see if we can become better versions of ourselves.”As for her head injury, Harrington says she suffered a “nasty slip” that almost took her resolve. It left a deep gash on her forehead, but she soldiered through it and reached the end by about 10:30 p.m. View this post on Instagram A post shared by ????? ?????????? With the election coming in a matter of days, Americans are waiting with baited breath as a survey found a majority of people expect the outcome of the election to play a role in their personal finances.According to the Consumer Credit Confidence Survey from Equifax, 69% say the outcome of the election is a significant factor that will impact their future financial decisions. The survey, which was released on Wednesday, came on the same day that the Dow Jones lost more than 900 points. The markets have taken a tumble in recent weeks as coronavirus cases jump throughout the US.The survey did find that more Americans (33%) are optimistic about the economy compared to April (27%)."The pandemic has impacted all aspects of our lives," said Beverly Anderson, President of Global Consumer Solutions at Equifax. "It has forced many consumers to closely manage household finances and reprioritize their available cash. Based upon more deliberate financial management, as well as the impact of some of the stimulus and financial relief programs, we see reductions in consumer debt, higher savings rates and better credit health." 1136
YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) — A man died after falling into a river at Yosemite National Park on Christmas Day, the National Park Service said Friday. The man apparently slipped down Silver Apron, a large, sloping granite area above Nevada Fall, and suffered a head injury, government spokesman Andrew Munoz said in a statement. The ongoing investigation is taking longer than usual because of the partial government shutdown, he said.Munoz said rangers responding to a 911 call arrived on scene in less than an hour and pulled the man, who has not been identified, from the water."Medical attention was provided to the visitor, but he died from his injuries," Munoz said. The man's death was first reported by Outside Magazine, which noted that at least 10 people died in the park last year, including another man who slipped and fell to his death near Nevada Fall.No further details on the Dec. 25 fatality were released.Munoz said the park didn't issue a press release about the death because of the shutdown, which began two weeks ago and forced furloughs of hundreds of thousands of federal government employees.Yosemite remains open to visitors during the shutdown, and crowds of visitors have been driving into the park to take advantage of free admission. This week, the park announced new access limitations and several closed areas within the park because of problems with human waste, damage to resources and other public safety concerns during the shutdown.Under the park service's shutdown plan, law enforcement staff remains on duty.Munoz said the visitor was not in a closed area when he fell. 1622
