SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Zoo's newest resident is getting the hang of life as a rhino.Edward, the southern white rhino, experienced is first trot around the San Diego Zoo Safari Park's Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center Monday.With his mom, Victoria, leading the way, Edward charged around the enclosure and even fit a mud bath into his busy schedule. It was the first time the mom and calf were released from the center's maternity yard and other off-exhibit areas.RELATED: Birth of baby rhino marks major milestone in effort to save critically endangered species“Victoria has been in the exhibit yard before but this was Edward’s first time,” said Jill Van Kempen, senior keeper at San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “The second they entered the exhibit, Victoria just took off, running laps, and it was so fun to see Edward running right along beside her. He was very energetic, sometimes breathing heavily, and even getting all four feet off the ground at times.”For about 30 minutes, the zoo says Edward and Victoria took advantage of the larger space by running around and stretching their legs.Edward was born 23 days ago, becoming the first southern white rhino calf born via artificial insemination in the country. Edward was born weighing about 148 pounds, but now weighs about 243 pounds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thousands of people enjoyed San Diego County beaches, despite the ongoing Beach Hazard Warnings.The National Weather Service announced there would be high surf, high tides, and strong rip currents on the San Diego County coastline. This Beach Hazard Warning continues until Sunday. Whether you're playing, laying, or even working on this July 4th holiday, spending time at Mission Beach was a dream come true. Especially if you were the Newman family, escaping the Phoenix heat. "When we left, I think it was 114 degrees," Bryant Newman said. They said it just doesn't compare. "We used to hang out a lot at the resorts there locally [in Phoenix], but we have been coming to California for Fourth of July for the last for five or six years," Newman said.But let's not forget about the Beach Hazard Warnings, still in effect until Sunday. "They did warn us about high surf before I left the hotel this morning," visitor from LA, Saira Kinuthia said. Kinuthia is not letting her two boys out of sight. She said while they are here for fun, safety comes first. "We had our talk, and if the lifeguard says that we need to come out of the water, then we have to come out of the water," Kinuthia said. Also keeping a close eye, there was a large police presence along the beaches and boardwalk. While most of the patrols were for alcohol, officers were also regulating the new e-scooter rules that took place on July 1st. Riders must slow down to 8 miles per hour on the boardwalk. But 10News saw many people zooming by. One was an accident between a double-rider and an elderly gentleman, walking on the boardwalk. All parties were okay. San Diego Police said they are giving many verbal warnings and a few citations for what they consider egregious e-scooter violations. Whether it's on the scooter or in the ocean, please remember. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thursday night, the State Board of Education voted to decline the renewal charters for all four Thrive Charter Schools in San Diego. They explain the test scores are too low and keep dropping. The vote technically didn't carry because the board needs six votes to pass any motion. The vote Thursday night was four to two, not all members were present for the vote. If the schools are forced to shut down, nearly 1,000 students would have to look for new schools at the end of the school year. She tells me this is her daughter's first year, "it's been a Godsend because I was so done with not being able to have LeLe brought up to her potential in the public schools". This school year, Buehler moved her daughter to Thrive and says she doesn't think the state board should shut the schools down solely based on that, "it's mind-blowing because this is going to change so many students lives, not the better, and it’s a shame that it's based on numbers on a paper when you actually see these are future leaders in our community."Meanwhile, some parents have already contacted the San Diego Unified School District to enroll their children for next year. The District Operations Support Officer, Marceline Marques, tells 10News, "in the past 24 hours, we've already placed 60 students throughout the district from Thrive".
