Receiving a wedding invitation should be exciting, not dreadful. But if it’s not the first one this season, or if you’re keeping a wary eye on your budget, getting that embossed white card in the mail could bring mixed emotions — and the search for a tactful way to decline. One-third of Americans have skipped or considered skipping a wedding because they couldn’t afford to attend, according to a recent survey from NerdWallet, conducted online by The Harris Poll. Their reluctance to attend is understandable, considering that the average reported budget for a close friend’s wedding gift was 8, according to the survey. “Many wedding guests look at a friend’s bridal registry and start doing the math,” says Courtney Jespersen, NerdWallet consumer saving expert. “But thankfully, the 0 coffee maker and 0 vacuum aren’t your only gift options.”Here are several budget-friendly wedding gifts that cost far less, or even nothing at all.Go in on a gift with a group. Other guests may be in the same boat, and if the wedding registry has gifts at various price points, there’s an opportunity for you to pool your gift budgets and choose something the couple really have their eyes on. Check with friends you know are on the guest list and choose an amount to spend that fits everyone’s budgets.Shop off-registry. You don’t have to stick to the wish list the couple put together, particularly if there’s nothing on there within your budget. “It’s perfectly fine for a guest to go off-registry,” says Diane Gottsman, national etiquette expert and founder of The Protocol School of Texas. “A registry is a useful guide that makes sure the bride and groom get what they need. However, a guest can also feel free to write a check or purchase something else they know the bride and groom will enjoy.”? MORE: 3 tips for the ideal wedding guestGive an experience. If the happy couple are millennials, there’s a good chance they’d love an experience more than a material gift anyway. Offer to plan and prepare a romantic picnic or help them build a garden in their backyard, Gottsman suggests.Contribute to a larger cause. If it’s good enough for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, this may work for your friends, too. More than 4 in 10 (43%) millennials say they’d prefer to donate to charity in a couple’s name than buy them a registry gift, according to the NerdWallet survey. This is an appropriate gift if the couple has requested charitable contributions in their name or if you know they feel strongly about a certain cause or organization. Most charities don’t have a donation minimum, so you can spend as much or as little as you want.Help fund a honeymoon (or home). Honeymoon and even down payment funds are increasingly popular choices for couples with pending nuptials. If your friends have set up such a registry, it’s a good option for guests with fixed budgets. ? MORE: How to cut wedding guest costsGet creative. Personalized gifts often mean the most. If you’re artistic, write the couple a meaningful poem or paint them a picture. You could also pay for someone else’s creativity — getting a relatively inexpensive photo frame personalized with the wedding date or couple’s last name, for example, makes a unique gift that may come in well under the average gift budget. “A gift doesn’t have to be expensive to be significant,” Gottsman says. “The most important thing is to let the bride and groom know you’re happy for them and wishing them a lifetime of happy memories.”More From NerdWallet 3626

Rep. Claudia Tenney, an upstate New York Republican who is up for re-election in one of the most competitive congressional districts in America, told a radio host in Albany that Democrats are more prone to be mass shooters.Speaking to host Fred Dicker on WGDJ radio, Tenney was discussing the shooting in Parkland, Florida that left 17 people dead when she made the remark."It's interesting that so many of these people that commit the mass murders end up being Democrats," Tenney said. "But the media doesn't talk about that."  546

Racial disparities and bias in health care can be a double whammy for multi-generational families of color — specifically when Black men are the caregivers."We tend to think of the male caregiver as that individual that comes helicoptering in and pays the bills or take care of yard work. But that's not all that male family caregivers do," said Rita Choula, the director of caregiving at the AARP Public Policy Institute.AARP has found that there are nearly 3 million African-American men taking care of an adult family member or non-relative — usually someone with memory, emotional or mental health conditions.Conversations with those caregivers reveal the unique challenges and stereotypes they face, including health care bias."If he is going into a situation with an understanding that there may be a bias — when we talk about higher levels of stress, that would be one thing that could cause more stress for an African American male caregiver," Choula said.Black men are also less likely to ask for help, which can add to the stress. They're often still working essential jobs and facing financial impacts due to tough choices about balancing careers with their caregiving responsibilities. That stress has been amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic, as caregivers now face the risk of bringing the virus home to loved ones. But these Black men are dedicated. A majority of all African-American caregivers find a sense of purpose or meaning in that role — more so than other caregivers."Increasingly, male family caregivers are bathing their mothers. That's a difficult thing," Choula said. "So, as a provider, are you talking to that male caregiver about what that may mean to them emotionally?"Any caregivers seeking support — either in-person or online — can call the AARP Caregiver Hotline at 877-333-5885 or click here for more information. 1855

QUEENS, NY — The childhood home of President Donald Trump in Queens, New York is reportedly for sale. A real estate agency is asking Trump supporters to donate to help purchase the five-bedroom, five-bathroom home, to show their “love.”“Love Trump? Thank President Trump by contributing to this campaign to buy his childhood home in his honor!” a GoFundMe page reads. The Tudor-style home along Wareham Place failed to sell at auction last year, and is listed for sale. Paramount Realty USA started the GoFundMe page to raise donations, with a goal of million. As of Monday morning, they had around ,500.“We are raising funds to buy President Trump's childhood home for him, or a charity of his choosing, as a token of appreciation. What happens to the historic property is up to him!” the group states in the description of their fundraiser. The group lists possible uses for Trump’s childhood home, including as a presidential library, national historic site, trophy property or house of worship. In September 2016, President Trump told tv host Jimmy Fallon “that’s really sad looking at that, I want to buy it, I want to buy it,” when Fallon informed the president his childhood home was for sale and showed images of it.According to Paramount Realty, the home sold in 2017 for about .14 million. For a brief time, Airbnb listed the home as available to rent for roughly 0/night after the 2017 sale. Online home listing sites have details of the home, now for sale again, including images of the interior of the home with what appears to be a cut-out of President Trump. The home appears to be listed for .9 million.Trump lived at the home from birth to around age 4, when his family moved to another home adjacent to the Wareham Place property. 1765
