This past spring, teachers from West Virginia to Oklahoma walked out of their classrooms and onto the steps of state capitols to protest low pay, overcrowded classrooms and cuts to school funding.Oklahoma teacher Jacobi Crowley was one of the teachers who participated in the strikes.“I dunno if I can be a 20 to 40-year educator,” says Crowley. “I love my job and what I do, but if things do not get better, I might have to start looking at a different career.”If things go the way he hopes this November, he will have a different career as a state senator, one who sees education as priority number 1.“We have to be fully funded,” Crowley says. “That’s the number one thing.”Crowley is one of hundreds of teachers nationwide who decided to run for public office this year. In Oklahoma alone, more than 100 teachers filed to run, and over half of them made it through their primary races in June.“They are getting frustrated with seeing the lack of support, the lack of funding and the lack of leadership out of state legislators in Oklahoma City, making those things possible for educators to be successful,” Crowley expresses.Educators say it’s a frustration that’s been building for years.In 2011, teachers staged a walkout and camped out for weeks at the Wisconsin State Capitol, protesting Gov. Scott Walker’s bill that gutted their unions. Ultimately, they were unsuccessful.But Wisconsin’s Superintendent of Schools saw that as a catalyst and decided to take matters into his own hands.“I believe the best way to fix this is to have an educator as governor of the State of Wisconsin,” says Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tony Evers.Evers will take on incumbent Gov. Scott Walker this November.Cut in funding and teacher pay has been some of the core issues of the protests. In Oklahoma, Crowley—like many other teachers—works multiple jobs to pay the bills.“I’m a football coach, that’s one thing to make ends meet,” explains Crowley. “I’m a basketball referee; I work a side gig as a radio station.”However, Crowley hopes the voters of Senate District 32 will deem him worthy of just one. 2114

Thousands of Qualcomm workers are facing uncertainty as the San Diego tech giant considers Broadcom's 0 billion takeover bid. Analysts say a takeover could include layoffs.If that happens, those displaced workers may actually find their next job in a craft brewery or coffee shop. That opportunity stems from Qualcomm's 2015 layoff of 1,300 local workers.At the time, the San Diego Workforce Partnership decided not to hold a traditional job fair. The organization is charged with helping laid off workers find new jobs. But CEO Peter Callstrom said the traditional job fair wouldn't work, and opted for a more relaxed environment."We can do it with some great craft brew and conversation and find that next career path," he said. The partnership came up with a smaller, happy hour style job fair, where former Qualcomm workers could connect with local tech employers like ESET and Tritech Software Systems. It worked. And last year the White House honored the program. Now, hiring at Happy Hour events are taking place at craft breweries - and coffee shops - across the county, focusing on fields like health care, life sciences, advanced manufacturing and clean energy. The events are free and open to the public but you have to register ahead of time. This is almost double the percentage of remote bookings over the holiday weekend in 2019.The most popular getaway locations in the US over the holiday weekend are ones with water access or traditional fall foliage; including Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, Big Bear Lake, California, Wilmington, North Carolina, Scranton, Pennsylvania, and Orange Beach, Alabama.After a slow summer travel season, with road trips and flights down year-over-year, AAA is reporting many will be heading out of town over the Labor Day Weekend. Although the number of travelers will be down compared to previous years, low gas prices and last-minute trips will put many of them on the roads.Once Labor Day Weekend is over, Airbnb is reporting guests are looking to stay longer. Many are looking for months-long stays into the fall, as work and schools remain closed with the coronavirus pandemic."There's this really new trend where traveling and living are starting to blur together," the company's CEO, Brian Chesky, told CNN Business' Richard Quest. Top USA Swimming officials are under fire for what critics say was a culture of sexual abuse that was allowed to persist for decades unchecked.A stunning new investigative report first published in the Orange County Register found that since 1997, more than 250 coaches and officials were either arrested, charged or disciplined by USA Swimming for sexual abuse or misconduct.The paper -- citing, documents, interviews with abuse survivors, former Olympians, USA Swimming officials and others -- claims that there are at least 590 victims.
