Authorities say a seventh grader who died by suicide inside a northeast Ohio middle school bathroom last week planned to carry out an attack on the school.According to Jackson Township Police Chief Mark Brink, the Jackson Memorial Middle School student admired the Columbine shooters and had an eight-step plan to carry out an attack.The boy "intended to conduct a school shooting and harm others," Brink said. On Feb. 20, police responded to Jackson Memorial Middle School in Stark County after receiving a call about a student who had shot himself in the boy's bathroom.According to the medical examiner's office, the boy died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.Security cameras captured the 13-year-old on video coming out of the restroom with a .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle he had brought to school under his clothes. As states begin to reopen, a new stage in the pandemic means elective surgeries are back on schedule.For 51-year-old mother of two Honaire Murillo, the pandemic delayed a much needed spinal surgery.“The shooting pains all the time and you know I had kids I have to run around. And so, it took about a year and I was so disappointed,” says Murillo.Twenty-four years ago, the aspiring pro-bodybuilder’s dreams were cut short when she was hit by a motorboat while visiting Puerto Rico on business.More than 20 surgeries later, Murillo needed another one.“The pain started coming back and so I knew I was going to have more surgery,” she says.Last week, doctors at Rush University Medical Center’s Midwest Orthopaedics in Chicago were able to get Murillo into surgery for a first-of-its-kind procedure.It was a minimally invasive spine surgery that utilized augmented reality.“The efficiency this provides because of the accuracy and the visualization of the spine is remarkable,” says Dr. Frank Phillips, the director and minimally invasive spinal surgeon at Rush who performed the procedure.A headset guidance system allowed Dr. Phillips to see Murillo’s spinal anatomy – essentially giving him X-ray vision.“That's exactly what it is,” says Dr. Phillips. “It really is X-ray vision. Except it's not just X-ray vision, you're actually seeing the real spine through the skin.”The CT scanned images are directly projected onto the surgeon’s retina and then superimposed right on top of the patient’s surgical area.“I was just blown away,” says Dr. Phillips. “The minute I put my headset on and looked down at the spine it was like that wow moment. I was like ‘this is crazy.’”Researchers say the FDA-cleared x-vision system could revolutionize the way surgeons perform complex procedures.“It's so accurate so precise the visualization so good you can do the surgery more efficiently which obviously translates into less anesthetic time and advantages to the patient,” says Phillips.For Murillo, who eventually went pro 15 years after her accident, this latest groundbreaking surgery has her thinking about another return to competition.“I'm still looking to see if I could comeback one more time. I'm not sure. But, yeah to me it's a dream.”Augmedics, the maker of the technology says it plans to explore the x-ray vision technology beyond just spinal surgery. 2365

BALTIMORE — BALTIMORE, M.D. - It’s Cyber Security Awareness month and the FBI wants to warn people about potential scams, especially while so many are working and going to school virtually.One Montgomery County man, who wants to stay anonymous, was scammed out of thousands of dollars using a dating app and doesn’t want others to make the same mistakes."Emotionally, it’s like there are claws in you that you can't seem to get out," said D. For years, the man who we are calling 'D' thought he was in a caring online relationship, but just last month, he found out it was all a scam."I was a little lonely. I was needing some attention or I guess I just wanted some," said D.It started 5 years ago. Divorced, he had turned to date apps Skout and Meet Me to fill that emotional void and met Brandy Bowens from Canada. It seemed like an innocent relationship for a while, but then she started asking him to be the middle man for her "art business"."By me already being invested in our conversations and our online relationships, I kind of felt it was okay for me to do these things that they wanted," said D.So he started getting money transferred to his bank account that he would then send out in cashiers checks."I had received three wire transfers of over 0,000 and these monies they claimed were for their business," said D. It kept adding up... and then she asked for his money.It all came to a head last month when he got a call from the FBI saying it was all a scam; his ,000 was gone."It's hard. I lost the money and it messed up everything in a financial way for me. I'm trying to build my credit back, just so much that that has screwed up for me," said D.FBI Special Agent Jeffrey Reising said these scams are even more common now during the pandemic because criminals are taking advantage of government programs like unemployment and funneling the money through romance scam victims, like D."Just red flags, like 'Why am I getting unemployment in other people's names in my account? Why am I getting tens of thousands of dollars in my account'?" said Reising.Other red flags to look for are if they can never meet in person, or even answer phone calls, if they don’t have a real voicemail or if they ask for your bank account."Why can I not talk to this person face to face using some of the technology available? Why can’t I interact? Why is all of our communication on a text?" said Reising.It’s red flags D saw, but the scammer could explain away."Saying 'my phone is broke' or 'my camera doesn’t work'," said D.Now he’s sharing his story, hoping that especially during this virtual time, he can stop others from falling victim."Be cautious. If you get that flag, if you don’t get the answer for that flag, then you need to leave it alone," said D. Authorities have now found two packages addressed to former Vice President Joe Biden that are similar in appearance and contain potential explosive devices that resemble the others sent earlier this week to prominent critics of President Donald Trump and CNN, a law enforcement official said Thursday.The two packages, discovered at Delaware postal facilities, were removed late Thursday morning, law enforcement officials said.Earlier Thursday, a suspicious package addressed to actor-director Robert De Niro was reported at the Manhattan building where his production company is based, and its marking and contents appear similar to the other pipe bomb packages, two law enforcement sources said.The FBI said Thursday morning that the three packages are "similar in appearance to the others."A manhunt is underway for the perpetrator behind the packages. Law enforcement authorities are treating the series of bombs as a domestic terror matter and are advising the public to remain vigilant.The motive is unknown, but the recipients are all prominent targets of right-wing criticism and, in many cases, of Trump himself. As the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation projected a resurgence of coronavirus-related deaths at the start of the fall, Treasury Sec. Steven Mnuchin said a second shutdown of the US economy is not on the table.In an interview with CNBC on Thursday, Mnuchin said, “We can’t shut down the economy again. I think we’ve learned that if you shut down the economy, you’re going to create more damage.”In the last three months, more than 113,000 Americans have died from the virus despite massive mitigation efforts. Efforts to mitigate the spread of the virus caused millions of US workers to file for unemployment.The coronavirus has remained deadly as state economies have return to operation. Johns Hopkins University says that the coronavirus has killed an average of 1,000 Americans per day over the last month, which is down from a peak of 2,000 to 2,500 per day during the month of April.It also appears that Mnuchin’s words did little to quell economic anxieties on Wall Street on Thursday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbling 1,800 points. The market had seen a steady rebound after a sudden drop in the market in March.Even with a functioning economy, Wall Street’s response to growing concerns of a coronavirus resurgence shows that further economic growth could be slowed. The US economy officially entered a recession in February as CDC leaders predicted that the US would experience community spread of the virus.
