SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University said Tuesday it plans to pause a majority of in-person instruction for the fall term. The university noted that the changes will begin the week of Thanksgiving.“Faculty offering in-person courses are encouraged to shift to virtual, preferably by Friday, Nov. 20. All faculty should convert to virtual instruction no later than Wednesday, Nov. 25,” the university said. The university also said that no in-person research by freshman, sophomores, or volunteers will be allowed for the remainder of the fall semester. The changes come as San Diego County enters the state’s purple tier. Also this week, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that a majority of the state's counties would enter the purple tier, suffocating economic activity. As of Tuesday afternoon, the county experienced more than 700 new coronavirus cases. 880

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Students and staff at Morse High School may have been exposed to tuberculosis, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. According to the agency, the periods of exposure were from June 17 to July 26 during summer school, then again from August 26 to September 10. Health officials and the San Diego Unified School District are working to notify those who may have been exposed. Testing will be provided on September 24 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Morse High School for students identified as potentially exposed. The district is providing testing to staff who may have been exposed. Tuberculosis is transmitted from person to person through indoor air during prolonged contact with someone who is infected. “It is important that we identify those who have had prolonged close contact in an enclosed space with the TB case and test them since the initial infection usually has no symptoms,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can prevent the infectious form of the disease.”Symptoms of TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. Anyone interested in more information on potential exposure is asked to call Morse High School at (619) 262-0763 or the County TB Control Program at (619) 692-8621. 1347

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's most popular hiking spots may become a little easier to get to — before the hike up, that is.County planners will consider whether to purchase about 84 acres of land from the Taylor Family Trust to help construct a parking lot on State route 67 to help hikers access the trail head.Currently, hikers and runners park along SR-67 and on surrounding neighborhood streets and run or hike along the highway and private or state-owned lands to access the county's utility road that leads up to the popular North County landmark."The most popular route to Potato Chip Rock is currently accessed by hikers parking on the shoulders of SR 67 and on nearby neighborhood streets, which poses safety concerns. Hikers park their vehicles on the shoulders of SR 67 and traverse private or State-owned land to access the City of San Diego’s utility road to Potato Chip Rock, which hikers use as a trail," the County Board of Supervisors plan says.RELATED: San Diego County park rangers recommend these trails in 2019Otherwise, hikers would have to park at Lake Poway Park to hike up Mount Woodson 7.5 miles to reach the Potato Chip Rock. Non-Poway residents must also pay to park on the weekends. From the Ramona side, the hike up is about four miles round trip. The county already owns 18 acres that is landlocked and can't be accessed directly. The 84-acre plot could provide access to the county land and allow for off-road parking, the board says. The plot of land would be large enough for parking to serve those accessing the eastern route of Mount Woodson as well as the county road up to the rock. Though, the plan doesn't anticipate using the entire property for parking and would conserve any surplus land as open space. The board will consider purchasing the land, appraised at .7 million, at a March 27 meeting.Read the full proposal here. 1877

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s City Council voted Tuesday to expand the social host ordinance to include marijuana and controlled substances. Before the vote, the ordinance only addressed underage drinking, but not drugs. The amendment, which was approved unanimously, will now go before the council for a second reading before it becomes law. “As a mom, the safety of my children is my priority, and as City Attorney, I am committed to protecting every child,” City Attorney Mara W. Elliott said. RELATED: What to know about the ‘social host ordinance' if you're hosting a party this holiday season“The addition of marijuana and controlled substances to the Social Host Ordinance gives law enforcement a tool to deter conduct that puts our kids at risk. Working with Police Chief David Nisleit, we will educate the public about this ordinance, and hold accountable those who choose to ignore it,” Elliott continued. According to the city, Proposition 64 opened the door for increased marijuana by minors. “Sometimes underage use is assisted by well-meaning adults who mistakenly believe its dangers decrease when the use occurs in environments they host,” the city said in a news release. 1199

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some workers hit hard by the pandemic are now turning to an entrepreneur program at San Diego Miramar College. In late March, Billie Guinto got word that her job booking events for an event planning agency was put on pause by COVID-19."My first reaction was dread ... If this lasts too long, I'm going to deplete my savings," said Guinto.Guinto tried to sign up for unemployment but has yet to hear back. She renewed her realtor license and then decided to take a chance."I had to pivot quickly, and I knew this program was getting off to a really good start," said Guinto. She enrolled in the summer session of Miramar College's REC Innovation Lab, a year-old incubator program aimed at budding entrepreneurs, especially in underrepresented communities. The now-virtual lab includes courses, pitch sessions, networking, and mentoring. For Guinto, the program is helping her grow her big idea."I decided to create All Source Events, an application for professional event planners," said Guinto. Her app will be a one-stop-shop for event planning, from scheduling to marketing to ticketing. Weeks into the program, she's already pitching to possible investors."By the end of summer, I plan to have a working iteration of the app to hand out to event planners to test and work out the kinks," said Guinto.Guinto is one of the dozens of students, many of them jobless, now following their entrepreneur dreams."My attitude changed tremendously, I am excited, hopeful, and confident. There is light at the end of the tunnel," said Guinto. 1556
