SAN DIEGO (KGTV, CNS) - San Diego police were searching today for men believed to have stolen cell phones and a set of keys from three San Diego State students near campus, a university official said.The robbery happened Friday shortly before 12:30 a.m. in the 5600 block of Mary Lane Drive and Dorothy Drive.Police reported three phones and a set of keys were taken from three SDSU students. One of the students was taken to a hospital for further medical treatment. SAN DIEGO COUNTY (CNS) - Seven "cool zones" are scheduled to open at noon Monday in San Diego County to provide relief from high temperatures.The cool zones are air-conditioned locations throughout the hottest areas of the county:-- Borrego Springs Library, 2580 Country Club Road;-- Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane;-- Lakeside Community Center, 9841 Vine St.;-- Potrero Branch Library, 24883 Potrero Valley Road;-- Santa Ysabel Nature Center, 22135 CA-79;-- Spring Valley Community Center, 8735 Jamacha Blvd.; and-- Valley Center Branch Library, 29200 Cole Grade Road.All sites will be open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.COVID-19 safety measures will be in place. Anyone entering a cool zone will have their temperature taken and all visitors and staff must wear face coverings and practice social distancing.The libraries are cooling sites only; no library services are being offered.Animals, except service animals, are not permitted in cooling zones."Although we need to take steps to keep seniors safe, it still remains important to also keep them cool," said Supervisor Dianne Jacob. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Hundreds of volunteers, from all over the state, are in San Diego for Governor Gavin Newsom’s emergency preparedness campaign. It’s called “California For All.” The campaign is designed to help emergency responders during wildfires and other disasters. California For All campaign is bringing together 600 volunteers. The Community Emergency Response Teams, also known as CERT, is on a mission to help prepare people in the community in case of a natural disaster.CERT members are also trained to assist first responders. “It’s an opportunity for community members to learn basic skills to prepare their community to respond, in case of a major disaster or any event, where the actual true responders can’t get there on time” Dore Bietz. Governor Gavin Newsom and legislators came together to make a million commitment to the campaign. A video message from the governor was played during today’s session. CERT members also help engage diverse and socially vulnerable communities during times of need. “It is very difficult for first responders to come in when there is a language barrier,” says Bietz. CERT is a FEMA- recognized program. Members suggest every household should have a plan in case there is an evacuation in their area. 1265

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --The FDA has placed new restrictions on a controversial birth control device called Essure.  The maker of the implant, Bayer, will only be allowed to sell to providers who agree to fully inform women about the risks and side effects.  A San Diego woman who had the Essure implant is now suing the physician who performed the procedure.  She says she wasn't given enough information and wants to warn others about her experience.  Three months after Essure was implanted she began experiencing severe pain. She eventually had a full hysterectomy.   603

San Diego City Council Tuesday night unanimously passed the location of a high-pressure underground pipeline to move sewage from San Diego's Morena treatment plant to a facility in Miramar. Residents say they're concerned the pipeline could break, wreaking havoc on the area. "Our concern is if that line was ruptured, bnecause it's under so miuch pressure, that it would spew raw sewage into the environment," said Ruth DeSantis, a longtime U.C. resident who heads the area's community foundation. DeSantis added that neighbors are concerned over traffic, noise, property values, and even smells seeping out of vents. There's a middle school, park, and hundreds of homes nearby. The city says it took various measures to minimize health and safety hazards, although some impacts like noise and traffic are unavoidable during construction.San Diego spokesman Jerry McCormick added that sewage geysers would not be possible under the pipeline system."Unlike a potable water system, where there are multiple loops to provide continuous pressure and in time of a rupture must be isolated by multiple valves, often times creating large releases of water, this system will not operate like that," McCormick said. "Instead, if there is a rupture, we can shut down the pumps and the flow will come to a very abrupt and quick stop."Community groups in University City are now teaming up with those in Clairemont to fight the project."We can put everything in Clairemont and Clairemont is sleeping, and I just wanted to say, that's not right," said Roseline Feral, of the nonprofit Clairemont Town Council. The city is aiming to have about a third of its water supply be reclaimed water by 2035.
