SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Surveillance video shows a couple at a Kearny Mesa home, targeting an American flag.John Dodds bought his flag two years ago and displayed it with a light outside his home on Atlas Street."My father was a Navy veteran, my brother was very patriotic and instilled it within me," Dodds said. "I want everyone to know how much I appreciate this country and what the veterans of this country do for us."A flag typically flies in front of Dodd's home 365 days a year. On Thursday morning, Dodds walked outside and saw the empty flag holder, before reviewing his surveillance video.Around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night, two people with backpacks - bandanas on their faces -  walked by. One of them walked up to his porch and yanked out the flag before she took off. Dodds posted the video on the Nextdoor app in hopes of tracking down those thieves - and his flag.        "Maybe it was a big joke to them, but I don't think they know how seriously most of us take the flag of the United States of America," he said. Dodds plans on getting another flag but is still holding out hope for it to be returned. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Golden State Killer crime spree may have ties to San Diego, according to District Attorney Summer Stephan.Investigators say DNA evidence tied Joseph DeAngelo to the series of killings, rapes and burglaries that occurred between 1976 and 1986 across California.Stephan said Thursday that unsolved cases may be linked to the crimes. 361

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The arsonist who rammed his car into the Raytheon building and set fire to a La Jolla home learned his sentence Tuesday. Daniel Mackinnon, 37, will spend seven years in prison for crimes the Assistant U.S. Attorney described as “politically-motivated.” Early on the morning of Apr. 24, Mackinnon went to the home of a prominent real estate developer. Two adults and three small children were home asleep at the time, prosecutors said. RELATED: Driver arrested after car crashes into defense contractor building in Kearny MesaMackinnon “poured an accelerant onto the door and ignited it,” officials said. “Investigators found remnants of a plastic water bottle, a pry bar and a bottle cap at the scene.” DNA evidence from the bottle cap helped tie Mackinnon to the crime. There were no reports of any injuries. Later the same morning, Mackinnon drove into the Kearny Mesa offices of Raytheon, a defense contractor. The car bounced back, and Mackinnon got out, opening his back hatch, prosecutors said. Moments later, flames erupted from the back of the car and damaged the office building. Prosecutors did not provide details about the political motivation for Mackinnon’s crimes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thanksgiving with the Salvation Army will be different in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic."We knew that we were going to do something," says Captain Sean Kelsley, who oversees the Salvation Army East County Operations. "The question was, what would it look like?"For the past 30 years, the Salvation Army held large, family-style gatherings to feed people experiencing homelessness, the disabled, and families in need at Golden Hall for Thanksgiving. They plan for 1,800 people, plus volunteers.But a gathering of 2,000+ people is strictly forbidden under California and San Diego County COVID-19 guidelines.In its place, the Salvation Army will offer "grab-and-go" style meals at four locations around the county."We're just glad to be able to be here," says Captain Kelsey.
