SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accosted a woman in the Fairmount Village neighborhood early Sunday and took off with her 2003 Toyota Celica, police said.He intercepted the 30-something woman in the 3800 block of 47th Street at 3:35 a.m., as she was heading to her car."The suspect pushed her to the ground and demanded her car keys," said San Diego Police Department officer Tony Martinez. "The victim complied, and the suspect fled in the victim's vehicle."Police said the vehicle's license plate is 6TQG479. The car has a rear spoiler, Martinez said.The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, about 6 feet tall with an average build. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A registered sex offender who broke into his next-door neighbor's home, where he raped and sodomized a 3-year-old girl, pleaded guilty today to four felony charges and is facing an 85-year prison term.Francisco Diaz, 47, entered his plea to four counts of forcible lewd acts on a child, and admitted serious prior felony convictions, according to Deputy District Attorney Claudia Grasso.Sentencing is scheduled for June 17.Last summer's attack occurred the morning of Aug. 11 in the 5200 block of Maple Street in Oak Park.RELATED: Man arrested after three-year-old says she was kidnapped and touchedDiaz broke a screen and curtain rod and climbed through a window of the sleeping child's bedroom. When the toddler woke up and cried while being sexually assaulted, Diaz carried her out through the window and was walking her toward his home when the defendant's mother saw them and wrapped the child -- who was naked from the waist down -- in a blanket.Police were called around 9:45 a.m. and Diaz was arrested.``It's a parent's worst nightmare,'' Grasso said following Diaz's arraignment last year. ``The violation, the betrayal, (it's just) horrific. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Wednesday publicly identified a Chula Vista city employee found slain in his home near Mount Helix.Chula Vista police personnel conducting a welfare check at the request of a co-worker found the body of 38-year-old Kevin Powell in his residence in the 4400 block of Carmen Drive in Casa De Oro shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday.Because the neighborhood is in an unincorporated area, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department was called in to take charge of the case, said sheriff's Lt. Thomas Seiver.Powell's death has been ruled a homicide, said Seiver, who declined to specify how the victim is believed to have died."The preliminary cause-of-death (finding) is being withheld for investigative reasons," Seiver said.Powell's work supervisor asked police to check on him after he missed several meetings, according to the sheriff's department. 878

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public Wednesday for help identifying a man who entered the women's locker room at a Hillcrest hospital and prevented a woman from leaving the restroom after she rejected his advances.The suspect entered the women's locker room at the UC San Diego Clinical Training Facility at 210 Dickenson St. shortly before 11:15 a.m. on Aug. 20, according to San Diego police.A 30-year-old woman was using the restroom inside the locker room when the man walked inside, prevented her from leaving, then asked her, "Don't you want this?" while gesturing to his body, police said. The man then left the restroom, but held onto the outside doorknob to keep the victim from locking the door.He then walked back inside the restroom and blocked her from leaving four more times before she was able to lock herself inside the locker room and wait until he left.Once the victim heard a co-worker in the hallway, she left the locker room and went outside the building to get help, but she saw the man near another building and she ran away before calling 911.The suspect was described as a 6-foot white man with a thin build, unshaven face and short, dark-colored hair with a gray patch near his right temple. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As part of its reopening plan amid the coronavirus pandemic, the San Diego Unified School District allowed some students facing severe challenges to return to in-person learning today, but a timeline for the district to reopen fully remains unclear.Phase 1 of the district's plan to reopen is to allow elementary school students ``who have been uniquely identified by their teachers as experiencing learning loss'' to have limited in-person appointments.Participation is voluntary and students who participate in the sessions will continue to receive online learning.On Tuesday, Lafayette Elementary School in the Clairemont Mesa neighborhood invited back 25 of the 27 students who were asked to return to in- person instruction -- many of whom are part of a deaf and hard-of-hearing program at the school.The district's Phase 1 includes a mandate for less than 20% capacity for rooms and for schools, half days to avoid groups eating at schools and a six-foot distancing everywhere on school grounds -- barriers or no barriers.This summer, San Diego Unified adopted standards developed in consultation with experts from UC San Diego.
