SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Coronavirus cases on the San Diego-based USS Theodore Roosevelt are multiplying quickly. On Thursday, Department of Defense officials announced 23 sailors have now tested positive for COVID-19. Officials say they have mild symptoms, fever and a cough. The aircraft carrier left her San Diego homeport in January for a seven-month deployment with roughly 5,000 sailors are on board. The carrier's last stop was in Vietnam more than two weeks ago. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Before the sun rose Friday, cars already packed parking lots at San Diego beaches to kick off Labor Day weekend and what's expected to the some of the hottest days of summer.However, San Diego County leaders said no matter where you are this weekend, they want to emphasize people must still follow CDC guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19.ABC 10News was at La Jolla Shores on Friday morning as beachgoers wearing masks secured spots far enough to stay socially distanced.Beachgoer and Santee resident Kris Moberly, “We know we can find a spot if we come early."It's the new norm, but also a way to ensure San Diego stays off the state's watchlist after just getting off of it two weeks ago.Moberly said she hopes everyone will follow the rules this weekend, telling ABC 10News, "I'm sure there's people who push the limits but you're responsible for your own health and I think most people are considerate of others."San Diego Lifeguards said they won't be regulating when it comes to social distancing or masks."We're going to be focused on keeping people safe in the water, but social distancing is everyone's responsibility,” a lifeguard told ABC 10News.County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said the status of our county depends on people's actions this weekend. In a press conference earlier this week, he said people should avoid indoor parties and continue to follow CDC guidelines.To ensure added safety, beaches like Carlsbad will also be handing out masks and teaching visitors about safety guidelines.Lifeguards said in addition to COVID-19 restrictions, the heat will also be a big safety factor. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying and finding a man suspected of intentionally setting a fire in San Diego’s Little Italy area.On July 18, at around 3:45 a.m., a man allegedly lit a recycling dumpster on fire that was against a wall of the Mona Lisa Italian Foods on 2061 India Street.Authorities said the fire spread to the building and a delivery van parked near the dumpster.The blaze caused ,000 in damage.The man suspected in the arson case is white or Hispanic in his mid 20s to early 30s. He appears to be balding, unshaven and has a stocky build.Authorities said the man was shirtless at the time of the incident, but he was wearing skinny jeans and dark-colored loafer-style shoes.The man also has a large vertical tattoo along the right side of his rib cage.Anyone with information on the suspected arsonist or the incident is asked to contact the Metro Arson Strike Team (MAST) at 619-236-6815 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to ,000 to anyone with information that leads to an arrest in the case. 1110

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - California state Assemblyman and San Deigo mayoral candidate Todd Gloria said he received serious threats of physical violence through social media Wednesday evening.Officials from Gloria's campaign said Thursday that the threats have been reported to the San Diego Police Department and are being investigated. ABC 10News reached out to SDPD Thursday regarding the threats, but the department did not immediately respond.Gloria's campaign said the threats come after former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio flooded voters with texts attacking Gloria for his support of SB-145.The bill lets a judge decide whether to force someone to register as a sex offender in certain circumstances after having sex with a minor. The bill is meant to end discrimination against LGBTQ individuals.RELATED: Ad accuses Barbara Bry of sleeping on the jobGloria said DeMaio's texts to voters are an effort to support Gloria's opponent in the mayoral race, City Councilmember Barbara Bry. Demaio has said he has not endorsed Bry.Gloria issued the following statement on Thursday regarding the threats:"Since KUSI and Carl DeMaio started knowingly misinforming voters about SB-145 in an effort to support my opponent, I have received multiple messages threatening physical violence. After receiving one last night brandishing a gun, it is clear that my campaign team and I must take this seriously. As such, we have reported the threats to the San Diego Police Department, and they are currently investigating.While I refuse to let this paralyze our campaign, voters deserve to know that this is what Barbara Bry's campaign is inspiring. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – County leaders are continuing to urge San Diegans that 2020 is not the year to skip the flu shot as we head into colder months amid a nearly year-long pandemic.On Wednesday, the fourth of six flu vaccine clinics was held by San Diego County’s Health and Human Services in Logan Heights. All hands were on deck with nurses from across the county, as more people are heading to the free clinics to get their flu shot this season."This is a year to be vigilant of protecting yourself from influenza and getting a vaccine, so we don't run into a situation where people are not only getting COVID, but getting influenza, and clogging our medical response system," said Thomas Zurek, public health nurse manager with the county.Zurek said while we can't control the spread of COVID-19 with a vaccine, we can when it comes to the spread of influenza, which hits hard during cold months when more people are indoors.Zurek added he hopes the free clinics will help keep people out of hospitals this season so staff can focus patients affected by COVID-19."Our numbers have been above what we're normally than seeing this time of year, which is great," Zurek said.The county will hold two more vaccine clinics Thursday and next Tuesday:Thursday, Oct. 29, at East Public Health Center, 367 N.
