DAMASCUS, June 29 (Xinhua) -- China's new special envoy to the Middle East Wu Sike said on Monday in an interview with Xinhua that the concerning parties of the Mideast peace process should hold confidence to make progress.     Wu, who arrived in Damascus on Monday, starting the fifth leg of his first visit to the Middle East as China's new special envoy.     After meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Mualem and Vice President Faruk Shareh, he told Xinhua that Syria and China has enjoyed good bilateral relationships and Syria appreciates China's role in the region and the Mideast peace process. China's Mideast envoy Wu Sike (L) meets with Syrian Vice President Faruk al-Shareh in Damascus, Syria, June 29, 2009."It is necessary to enhance the coordination and communication between two countries," said Wu.     He also stressed that just and comprehensive Mideast peace could only be achieved by abiding by the relevant international resolutions and the land-for-peace principles.     "We held good talks with Minister Mualem on the latest developments in the region," the Chinese official said, adding "we support the return of the occupied Golan heights and the establishment of a viable Palestine state with independent sovereignty."     Wu, former Chinese ambassador to Egypt, was appointed as the special envoy in March this year to replace Sun Bigan.     He has been director of the Department of West Asian and North African Affairs of the Foreign Ministry, ambassador to Saudi Arabia and Egypt, and also the first Chinese plenipotentiary to the Arab League. Visiting China's Mideast envoy Wu Sike (L) meets with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem in Damascus, Syria, June 29, 2009.Before visiting Syria, Wu has already visited Egypt, the Palestinian territories, Israel and Jordan.     He told reporters that although some positive signs has turned up in the region, confidence is still needed, because "we have a long and tough way ahead to finally reach a just and comprehensive peace in the region."     During his first stop in Egypt on June 21, Wu met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abu Gheit, and he also had talks with the Cairo-based Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa.     The Chinese official told Egyptian officials that "Negotiation is the only and the best way to solve the conflicts in the region and China will support all the efforts in this regard."     After holding dialogues with Arab and Israeli officials, Wu noted that Arab world has seen the positive factors in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's recent foreign policy speech, which conditionally accepted the two state solution for the first time.     However, the Arab world widely opposed the preconditions of establishing a Palestinian state in Netanyahu's speech, highlighting the Palestinian state is unable to exist with those conditions, said Wu.     "Israel could not achieve its ultimate security until Israel and the Palestinians realize their peaceful coexistence," said the Chinese envoy, noting that "I have urged the Israeli leaders and politicians to accept the two state solution, stop establishing settlements and negotiate with Syria and Lebanon with concerning issues."     Meanwhile, the Chinese envoy, who is also scheduled to visit Lebanon and Russia, stressed that China is willing to support with all effort to make peace in the Middle East.     "Both Arab world and Israel are waiting for the other side to make a substantial step, therefore the international community needs to push forward the process," said Wu.

MILAN, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo arrived in the Italian city of Milan on Monday for an official goodwill visit to the country.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), began his tour in Italy at the invitation of Italian Senate President Renato Schifani and Chamber of Deputies President Gianfranco Fini.     In a written statement released at the airport upon his arrival, Wu said China is ready to work with Italy to maintain the sound momentum of practical cooperation so as to make contributions to overcoming the international financial crisis and spurring the recovery of the world economy. Wu Bangguo (R Front), chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, arrives in Milan on May 18, 2009 at the start of an official goodwill visit to Italy    Wu is scheduled to meet with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi as well as heads of both houses of the Italian parliament and other Italian leaders to exchange views on bilateral relations and other regional and international issues of common concern.     Wu is also to visit a research and development center of the Italian National Agency for New Technology, Energy and the Environment (ENEA), which shows China's interest in using European technologies to improve energy efficiency of its economy.     After Chinese President Hu Jintao's attendance at the London G20 summit in April and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's Europe tour in January, Wu is yet another senior Chinese leader to visit Europe in the past few months.     Against the background of the worsening global financial crisis, Wu's visit highlighted the importance that China attaches to cooperation with Europe in addressing global challenges.     Italy, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the G8 group, will host a summit between the leaders of G8 nations and developing countries in June. BEIJING, June 27 (Xinhua) -- China's monthly power generation is expected to rise for the first time in June, after eight months of declines, said the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) Friday on its website.     The top planning agency based the forecast on statistics collected by State Grid and China Southern Power Grid from June 1 to 23.     Due to increasing economic activity and high temperatures, daily power generation topped 10 billion kilowatt hours for nine days during mid-June and exceeded 10.80 billion kw/hrs on June 23 -- the highest this year, said the NDRC.     Eight provinces and regions set power records from June 1 to June 23: Hebei, Hubei, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Yunnan and Hainan provinces and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

CHENGDU, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu called on Thursday Asian and European countries to improve their disaster prevention and relief abilities through cooperation and sharing of information.     Hui made the remark at an Asia-Europe workshop on cooperation and capacity building in disaster prevention and relief, held in Chengdu, capital of southwest Sichuan Province.     Hui said natural disasters are common challenges facing the whole mankind, and cooperation between Asian and European countries in disaster relief not only has an important bearing on the economic development and livelihood of the people, but also on the sustainable development of the mankind.     "Asian and European countries should further enhance exchange and cooperation in monitoring and forecast of disasters, as well as emergency response and relief efforts," said Hui, who also suggested building of a cooperation mechanism and information sharing, that would serve the improvement of disaster prevention and relief abilities of all countries.     China had frequent natural disasters and would share its experience in coping with disasters with other countries, Hui said. He said China would continue to provide support and aid within its ability to the capacity building in disaster relief for other developing countries.     On the country's disaster prevention and relief capacity building, Hui said, China would further improve its monitoring of natural disasters and emergency rescue system, raise anti-disaster standards for buildings and increase public awareness of disasters and push for international cooperation in disaster relief.     The vice premier expressed China's appreciation for international help and support to the country's disaster relief and quake relief after the 8.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Wenchuan of Sichuan on May 12, 2008.

BEIJING, May 8 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday honored dozens of military organizations and individuals for their contribution to the nation's quake relief or scientific research work.     President and Chairman of the Central Military Commission Hu Jintao signed a decree awarding merits to 15 organizations and 28 individuals with the People's Liberation Army (PLA).     Three classes of merits were meted out in accordance with the receivers' contribution.     Ten units and individuals were cited for their relief efforts after the 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern China on May 12 last year, two for "remarkable troop building," five for "achievements in major scientific experiments," two for artist creations and the rest for achievements in scientific researches, according to the decree.     In a separate decree signed by Hu, four other soldiers and officers were awarded honorable titles as being "model examples" for their peers.     One of them, Meng Xiangbin, was given the honor posthumously as he was drowned while trying to save a suicidal woman from a river in eastern Zhejiang Province in 2007.
