YORBA LINDA (CNS) - A 40-year-old Long Beach woman is being held on possible charges including attempted murder after allegedly driving her car into a group of Black Lives Matter protesters and counter demonstrators in Yorba Linda. The BLM protest against police violence and systemic racism began at 2 p.m. Saturday on Imperial Highway and was interrupted by a much larger group of President Donald Trump supporters, who waved American flags and held pro-Trump signs. The Orange County Sheriff's Department declared the demonstration an unlawful assembly at 2:40 p.m. and ordered everyone to leave the area, Sgt. Dennis Breckner said.Tatiana Turner, a protester believed to be associated with the "Caravan of Justice" -- a car-based protest in solidarity with BLM -- was exiting the Yorba Linda Public Library parking lot when she allegedly drove her compact car through an intersection and struck a man and woman, according to OCSD PIO Carrie Braun."The man suffered two broken legs and the woman had major injuries," Breckner said. "Both were transported to a hospital for treatment of their injuries."Breckner initially identified the male victim as a BLM demonstrator, but Braun said the department is no longer sure if that was the case, saying he might have been a counter-protester.Turner was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, Braun said. She was being held on million bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, according to Orange County jail records.Jason Mancuso, 46, of Anaheim, was arrested and jailed for refusing to leave after the unlawful assembly was declared, Braun said. He has a scheduled court date on Oct. 26, according to jail records.A total of 250 protesters converged at the scene, Breckner estimated, adding that everyone eventually left and roads were reopened.A 47-year-old Yorba Linda man at the protest, who would only give his name as Mike because he feared Antifa-leaning elements might seek to harm him, told City News Service that he's been getting together with a group of several dozen other locals every other week for patriotic rallies. He claimed he personally saw three Trump supporters injured by the car that was hemmed in and trying to drive away. But he also said the "Make America Great Again" demonstrators had been harassing the woman, causing the panicked look on her face."They started to pound on her car," he said, while clutching a carefully rolled up American flag. "It took damage."Mike told CNS he witnessed one female counter-protester get swept under the vehicle, as well as a male counter-protester who suffered an ankle injury. He said another male counter-protester suffered minor abrasions. The crowd included hundreds of pro-Trump supporters and about 100 to 150 Black Lives Matter demonstrators. 2818

Zachary Cruz, the younger brother of Parkland, Florida, school shooter Nikolas Cruz, was sentenced Thursday to six months of probation for trespassing at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School earlier this month. The younger Cruz was released Thursday afternoon from the Broward County Jail.He was initially jailed on a 0,000 bond, leading his attorney to argue he was being punished because of his older brother, who killed 17 people last month at the school in one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern US history.Under the terms of his probation, Zachary Cruz will wear a GPS monitor and must remain one mile away from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas campus. He is also forbidden from having any contact with victims or family members of the February 14 mass shooting.Cruz, 18, was arrested March 19 on a misdemeanor trespassing charge at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High. After his arrest, the younger Cruz told police he wanted to "reflect on the school shooting and soak it in," according to an arrest report.Probation was reached as part of a plea deal in the case. Cruz, shackled and wearing a brown jumpsuit Thursday morning, pleaded no contest to trespassing. His attorney Joseph Kimok had earlier argued that the excessive bond showed Cruz was being punished for his brother's actions."He is being held because of who he is related to, not because of anything that he did," Kimok told Judge Kim Theresa Mollica.Police said he visited the campus at least three times since the school massacre. His attorney filed a motion for his client's release, calling his treatment immoral, reprehensible, unlawful and unconstitutional. There is no evidence that the defendant threatened anyone when arrested, Kimok wrote. 1724

Young people are notorious for skipping elections, and it's a problem voting advocates have tried solving for decades. This year, they had a big uphill battle, mobilizing future voters virtually.“Pre-pandemic, you and I would probably be interviewing in this beautiful student union of ours," said Armando Sepulveda II. “We would have candidates talking to students, meeting students.”A senior at San Diego State University, Sepulveda is Rock the Vote Chair at his school, working on getting as many students as possible registered to vote. “We were going into the dark because we didn’t have any pre-context of how we could handle a Rock the Vote campaign during a pandemic," said Sepulveda. They couldn’t hold large gatherings to register students to vote or hold candidate debates in auditoriums. On-campus posters were replaced with posts online.“We acknowledged that social media was a great platform to get apathetic students because regardless of what they’re doing during the day, they’re probably going to log onto Instagram at least once or twice," said Sepulveda. To keep students from scrolling past their message, Sepulveda's team focused on design, creating easy-to-read, digestible content. “We wanted to make it as simple and visually interesting as possible," he said. They conducted "Zoom-arounds," crashing club meetings to talk about propositions, how to get your ballot and making sure it’s counted. They also held community forums online with local candidates.“I think a lot of young people want to have a renewed sense in trust in the government, but in order to have that, you have to have people you trust elected," said Sepulveda. Sepulveda says after combining California and out-of-state students, they surpassed their goal of registering 1,400 students to vote. Researchers at Tufts University say youth turnout is surging in many states. More than 7 million young people have already voted early or absentee this election. 1958

in an attempt to chase down a car that rear-ended him.Olufemi S. Olomola, 38, was charged with two counts of abduction, reckless driving and felony hit and run for the Monday night incident.John Murray and Tameka Swann said Olomola picked them up from their home just before 8 p.m. Monday for a night out on the town. But, shortly after pulling away, they said someone rear-ended their Uber on Chamberlayne Avenue.“Our Uber attempted to pull over so that they exchange information, but the car didn’t stop behind us. They went around us and sped off and that’s when our Uber sped off behind him,” Swann said.Murray began to stream their trip on Facebook Live from the backseat. The driver pulled onto West Broad Street and raced through several red lights, according to the video. The couple said an SUV then crashed into the side of their car at West Broad Street and Arthur Ashe Boulevard. The video showed the driver continuing to speed away, narrowly missing a bicyclist.“At approximately 8:15 p.m. on Monday, officers were called to the 2800 block of West Broad Street for the report of a hit and run. Officers arrived and spoke to the driver who reported that while transporting passengers, his vehicle was struck by another car and that car left the scene,” a police spokesperson said.“That was the scariest moment of my life,” Swann said. “I have never been that scared in my life. It was a nightmare.”The couple says they suffered minor bruises and were checked out at the hospital.A spokesperson with Uber said they are also investigating the ride.“This driver’s behavior is concerning, and we have removed his access to the app pending investigation,” said an Uber spokeswoman.Anyone with information about the first hit and run or this incident is asked to call Detective G. Drago at (804) 646-1369.Olomola is due in court on Thursday morning. This story was originally published by Brendan King on 1909
