Scenes of chaos erupted at Hong Kong's airport on Tuesday evening as riot police clashed with protesters who continued to block security gates at one of the world's largest travel hubs. The police made their first significant appearance at the airport since protests began there five days ago, with at least five police buses arriving at the airport after 10:30 p.m.Protestors scrambled to set up barricades as police officers left the buses and entered the airport. Riot police appeared soon after, amassing outside the airport terminal and clashing with demonstrators. The violence came after Hong Kong's Airport Authority announced that all check-in services would be suspended for another night, due to terminal operations being "seriously disrupted.""Members of the public are advised not to come to the airport," the authority said in a statement. All outbound flights which have not yet completed the check-in process have been canceled. 954

Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka — the grand slam leader in the professional tennis era and newcomer who had surged to the last two majors — both exited the French Open on Saturday in a double shock.Osaka was the first to depart in the afternoon 6-4 and 6-2 to Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic before Williams fell to fellow American Sofia Kenin 6-2 and 7-5 in a dramatic evening contest.Williams was short of matches entering the French Open, completing a mere three after her eventful Australian Open that ended with an ankle injury in a quarterfinal defeat.Illness, but more prominently of late, a knee injury have kept the winner of 23 majors on the sidelines.Yet any tournament the 37-year-old plays in is one she can win. And when Williams recovered from a set and break down to lead her 35th-ranked rival 5-4 in the second set, few would have bet against her.Her smooth, potent serve started to click and the 10th seed had the fans on Philippe Chatrier court behind her, especially as Kenin contested several line calls. But her 20-year-old foe, born in Moscow, hung in there and broke for 6-5 in a game that began with Williams erring long on a forehand with Kenin stranded.Williams had one more chance but sent a forehand wide on break point. Then on a second match point, her backhand sailed long.Osaka, meanwhile, admitted the French Open was just too much to handle. The world No. 1 saw her bid to become the first female player since her idol Williams in 2015 to claim three straight majors come to an end.Different feeling"Definitely I think this tournament I have had a feeling that was different to the other grand slams, or every other grand slam that I have played, because usually I find it very freeing and fun, and this time around I was kind of tense the entire time," Osaka told reporters. The fatigue that Osaka said she felt against Siniakova might have been a result. And she suspected headaches she experienced earlier at the clay-court major were because of stress.Still, her level of disappointment at exiting was off the charts."It would go from one to 10 and I'm like at a 100 right now," said Osaka. When Osaka remarked before the tournament that she sought a calendar year grand slam -- last achieved by Steffi Graf in 1988 -- it could have been interpreted as a tongue in cheek comment or at least a goal for further down the road.Osaka is still only 21.Thinking about calendar year slamBut she clearly focused on doing it this year, which she called a mistake."I think I was overthinking this calendar slam," said Osaka. "For me this is something that I have wanted to do forever, but I think I have to think about it like if it was that easy, everyone would have done it."I just have to keep training hard and put myself in a position again to do it hopefully."Osaka is adapting to the clay but she is a quick study, evidenced by a 7-1 record on the surface this season entering the French Open. That combined with her performances at the US Open -- 3000

Some Florida residents are leaving their cars at gas stations because fuel is running out before Hurricane Dorian arrives in the state.Miami resident Marion Wilkinson Scott told CNN on Friday he saw 12 cars that were left Thursday night at a Chevron on 152nd Street, five at a Mobile station in the Hammocks and two at another Chevron across from his house. He posted on Twitter a picture of one of those cars with a note on the dash: "I live close by. My car is out of gas. Please call me when more arrives!" A phone number was included."My friends have given similar reports from various places in the city. I think a lot of people were in denial about this storm. Now they are a bit panicky," Scott told CNN.He said he tried to top off his own tank at all those stations Thursday but had no luck."There isn't any. We've kept it topped off every night since last week (because Irma was a similar scenario for fuel scarcity two years ago). That ended last night when the stations all ran out of gasoline," he said."As a result, we have one unused car with a tank and another with half a tank. I hope it's enough to last til Tuesday next week. The possibilities of landfall are so broad that the entire eastern seaboard of Florida has made a run on gas simultaneously."Scott says he's apprehensive about the storm."We stocked up last week when it was a tropical storm and have reservations for a hurricane-proof hotel with a generator in Bonita Springs," he said."I have two little girls. I don't need for them to be in the heat once the electricity goes. We have shutters on our home. I'm glad we filled or tanks last week and have provisions. It is difficult to heed warnings when there is no gas at the station and no water in the market. Our tub will be filled."He says his daughters have already excitedly packed their favorite toys in backpacks for the trip across state. They're taking other measures, too. "We are people of faith. We went to the church to pray," Scott said.Other parts of Miami also have been affected by the gas shortage. The Shell on 41st Street, a main thoroughfare through Miami Beach, ran out of gas at about 10 p.m. Thursday, according to Harry, an employee who declined to give his last name. Asked when they'd be getting a delivery, he said, "We have no idea. The distributor has no idea."A few blocks south, there was a slightly chaotic scene Friday morning at the Valero on 23rd Street, where a dozen cars lined up for gas while the station still had it. Mathew Cabral filled about a dozen canisters with diesel, but not for his own use. He works for a rental company that stocks Miami Beach with chairs, cabanas and other tourist items and he and his coworkers were spending the morning getting their inventory off the beach. When asked if he was nervous about the incoming storm, he said, "No, not really, not at Category 3. But if it's a Category 4, well, that's a bit different."People in other parts of Florida posted videos on social media of long lines of cars waiting to get into gas stations.Dango Kumwenda, 24, who lives in Windermere, Florida, told CNN he waited in line for almost two hours to get gas at a Wawa station in Winter Garden."This was probably the only gas station within like a 10-mile radius with gas," he told CNN.Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis 3310
