SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Researchers at the UC San Diego School of Medicine released a study Friday looking into loneliness in elderly adults, and found it can be overcome in a variety of ways.The researchers noticed what appeared to be an epidemic of loneliness among adults in senior living or retirement communities, and sought to identify why. According to the study, 85% of the interviewed residents reported moderate to severe levels of loneliness.Dr. Dilip V. Jeste, senior author of the study and senior associate dean for the Center of Healthy Aging and professor of psychiatry and neurosciences at UC San Diego School of Medicine, said loneliness can be deadly.``Loneliness rivals smoking and obesity in its impact on shortening longevity,'' Jeste said. ``It is a growing public health concern, and it's important that we identify the underlying causes of loneliness from the seniors' own perspectives so we can help resolve it and improve the overall health, well-being and longevity of our aging population.''RELATED: Resource guide: keeping seniors protected from abuseJeste said he found few published, qualitative studies about loneliness among older adults, particularly in the independent living section of senior housing communities.He said several personal and environmental factors impacted the study subjects, all 100 of whom lived in an independent housing section of senior- living centers in San Diego.``Loneliness is subjective,'' Jeste said. ``Different people feel lonely for different reasons despite having opportunities and resources for socialization. Losing spouses, siblings and friends can be difficult at any age, but as contacts from younger years dwindle, Jeste said he found that many residents found making new friends difficult and not as fulfilling as those with whom they grew up. Performing a good act for someone else or coming to terms with aging are broad but effective techniques to cope with loneliness, the study found.``One resident told us, 'I've accepted the aging process. I'm not afraid of it. I used to climb mountains. I want to keep moving, even if I have to crawl. I have to be realistic about getting older, but I consider and accept life as a transition,''' Jeste said. ``Another resident responded, 'I may feel alone, but that doesn't mean I'm lonely. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County students' performance on standardized tests in English and math mostly held steady from the previous year, according to scores released Wednesday by the California Department of Education.The performance of San Diego County students on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress tests generally surpassed that of students statewide, according to the department. The CAASPP tests were administered in the spring to more than 3 million students across the state in grades 3-8 and 11. In San Diego County, 26.45% of the more than 250,000 students who took the tests exceeded the state standard in English, up slightly from 25.79 percent the previous year. According to the state, 30.1% met the standard, down slightly from 30.46% last year; 20.89% ``nearly'' met the standard, down slightly from 20.93% last year; and 22.55% failed to meet it, down from 22.82% the previous year. In math, 23.45% exceeded the standard, 21.6% met it, 24.84% nearly met it and 30.12% failed to meet it. The percentages from the previous year were 22.52%, 21.76%, 25.37% and 30.36%, respectively. Statewide, 22.23% exceeded the standard in English, while 28.64% met it, 22.4% nearly met it and 26.73% failed to meet it. In math, 19.69% exceeded the standard, 20.04% met it, 25.41% nearly met it and 34.86% failed to meet it. The statewide scores were all also moderately improved from the previous year. A total of 3,607 homes were sold in the county, down 3.5 percent from 3,739 during the same month the previous year.A total of 21,277 new and resale houses and condos changed hands in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, Ventura, San Bernardino and Orange counties last month, according to CoreLogic. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Convention Center announced its planned road closure windows Wednesday for Comic-Con 2019, scheduled for July 17- 21.Harbor Drive will be closed to all traffic between First Avenue and Park Boulevard from 3-10 p.m. July 17, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. July 18-20 and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. July 21. The closure will affect all non-foot traffic, according to the convention center, including cars, bikes, skateboards and dockless bikes and scooters.Comic-Con attendees will also need a valid convention badge to access the convention center, its front drive and adjacent terraces and sidewalks.
