SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Poway rabbi who survived a gunman's rampage on his synagogue over a year ago is facing probation after pleading guilty to federal charges of tax fraud and wire fraud, the U.S. Attorney's Office in San Diego said in a press conference Tuesday.Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein pleaded guilty to participating in a 90-10 "tax deduction conspiracy" in which Goldstein collected large donations to Chabad of Poway, but then secretly returned 90 percent of the contribution back to the individual along with a receipt."The donors then illegally claimed huge tax deductions for these fake donations, and Rabbi Goldstein kept for himself 10 percent of the donations which over the course of this fraud totaled more than 0,000," said United States Attorney Robert S. The rabbi created fake invoices using a fictitious construction company to receive money for property damage repairs caused by the 2007 San Diego wildfires. Goldstein obtained grants to make improvements or repairs to Chabad, but he instead pocketed the money, according to the criminal complaint.Goldstein, 58, fell into the national spotlight in April 2019 after a gunman armed with an AR-15 style weapon opened fire inside the Chabad of Poway during the final day of Passover. The shooting left one person dead and three others injured, including a young girl.Federal officials have charged suspected gunman John Earnest with 109 total hate crime-related violations. Under the federal charges, Earnest faces a possible death sentence.Goldstein was shot in both index fingers and lost one of his index fingers as a result. The rabbi was invited to the National Prayer Breakfast at the White House days after the incident.In response to the charges, the Chabad of Poway said it removed Goldstein from his duties and terminated its relationship with him."Upon learning of these allegations some months ago, we launched an internal review, following which the rabbi was removed from all of his duties at Chabad of Poway, his relationship with the organization terminated, and he was dismissed by Chabad-Lubavitch Headquarters as a representative of the movement," the Chabad of Poway said in a statement."We hope and pray that Rabbi Goldstein finds the professional help that he needs and makes amends to our country and to the people he has hurt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Planning commission Thursday voted to recommend a zoning change for a massive office complex along State route 56 in Torrey Highlands.The site in question is an 11-acre site just south of SR-56 near Camino Del Sur, surrounded on three sides by the Del Mar Mesa Preserve. Cisterra Development plans to build a 450,000-square-foot office complex, including a 7-story parking structure."Right now, San Diego is on the verge of a shortage of employment-suitable land for the kinds of innovation economy jobs that ... are coming to San Diego now. We need large lots of space for companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft ... We try to bring homes near jobs, but we also need to bring jobs near homes. There are thousands of homes in the area," said David Dick of Cisterra Development.According to Cisterra, the project will lead to more than 1,900 jobs, described as "permanent and high-wage."Darshana Patel, a member of the Rancho Penasquitos Planning Board, is skeptical. She points to a nearby, even-larger office complex approved in 2013."It's approved, graded, and no one's interested. Also, these jobs are highly specialized. It's no given that our neighbors will fill these positions," said Patel.What Patel is sure of are the other impacts of the project, from more traffic in a highly congested area, to environmental impacts. One by one, dozens sounded their concern at a Planning Commission meeting, including members of planning, environmental and recreational groups. The connected preserves include protected vernal pools."It will permanently negatively impact one of the last remaining untrampled areas of native habitat and open space in San Diego," said Susie Murphy, Executive Director of the San Diego Mountain Biking Association."We are going to have human activity in the preserve. SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - A San Marcos family is dealing with an unbearable loss. The Houghton family was involved in a horrific crash that killed their 13-year-old son, Bryce, Saturday night on the 405 in Orange County. The family of five was headed to San Luis Obispo to visit relatives, according to Michael Houghton. Their 17-year-old daughter was driving, when their van began to slow down. Michael says it seemed like it was running out of gas. It stopped in the HOV lane. Michael, his wife, and three kids decided to stay in the van buckled up and call for help. While they waited for 911 and a tow truck, CHP says a pickup truck slammed into the van. Another vehicle hit the pickup truck after the initial crash. The CHP arrested the driver of the pickup truck on suspicion of DUI. Officers said the driver of the pickup had major injuries. Four people in the third vehicle received minor injuries. Michael described his youngest son as a jovial person who loved to make people smile. “Short in stature but big in personality,” Michael said. “One of the things he loved the most was to make people happy.” The Houghton’s other two children, 15-year-old Mason, and 17-year-old Carissa, received minor injuries, though Mason will be on crutches, according to his dad. Michael’s wife, Gael, needed surgery. Michael received injuries to the back of his head, and injuries to his eye that had previously undergone a procedure. The family was very involved with Anthem Church in Vista, as well as Bread of Life Rescue Mission in Oceanside. The Houghtons had organized an event for the homeless on the Saturday before the crash.
