LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Mookie Betts hit three home runs in a game for the sixth time in his career, matching a major league record, and the Los Angeles Dodgers launched a season-high six long balls in all Thursday night during an 11-2 rout of the San Diego Padres.Betts tied a mark shared by Sammy Sosa and Hall of Famer Johnny Mize. The star outfielder went 4 for 4 with five RBIs and was hit by a pitch in the leadoff spot, where manager Dave Roberts has been reluctant to lock him in.With a chance to tie the big league record of four home runs in one game, Betts reached on an infield single in the seventh. The Padres got off to a good start against Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias, with Tommy Pham and Eric Hosmer hitting back-to-back home runs in the top of the first inning for a quick 2-0 lead. However, Urias and Dodgers relievers stifled the Padres offense for the rest of the game. 892
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lawyers for a church with more than 160 congregations across California say they will seek an immediate court order allowing indoor worship after the Supreme Court told a lower federal court to reexamine state coronavirus restrictions on church services. The victory Thursday for Pasadena-based Harvest Rock Church and Harvest International Ministry follows a recent high court ruling in favor of churches and synagogues in New York. “The bottom line result is that where the court needs to go is inevitable,” said Attorney Mathew Staver, who represents the church. “What the court did last week and what they did today, it’s a whole new landscape and I think they’ve telegraphed quite clearly the direction they’re going.”RELATED: San Diego County issues COVID-19 outbreak notices for two more Awaken Church locationsThe Supreme Court order came the day after restaurants gained some traction in their challenge to a Los Angeles County ban on outdoor dining. The cases represent rare gains in legal challenges of COVID-19 regulations. 1062
Lorde has offered an apology after she was roasted for joking about Whitney Houston and a bathtub. The 21-year-old singer posted a now-deleted Instagram photo of a tub being filled with running water and captioned it, "And iiii will always love you," a lyric from Houston's 1992 recording of the Dolly Parton song "I Will Always Love You."Houston accidentally drowned in a bathtub in a suite at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, in February 2012.Some fans were incensed by the posting and took to social media to vent.Others defended Lorde and insisted the singer didn't mean to make a joke of Houston's death. The New Zealand native posted a note on her Instagram Stories to apologize."Extremely extremely poorly chosen quote. I'm so sorry for offending anyone," she wrote. "I hadn't even put this together I was just excited to take a bath.""I'm an idiot," Lorde added. "Love Whitney forever and ever. Sorry again."She even responded in the comments on the Instagram page of gossip site The Shade Room."I was meaning no disrespect and hadn't put anything together because I'm dumb and it's my day off," Lorde wrote. "SORRY." 1153
Lorenza Marrujo is 67 years old and less than five feet tall — but she's no weakling. An intruder recently confronted Marrujo at her seniors apartment complex in Fontana, California. Not only did she protect herself, but her neighbors, too."As he was coming towards me, I said, 'back off.' Right away," Marrujo said.Marrujo has 26 years of martial arts training, so when she told the intruder to back off, he listened. Unfortunately, he made his way to the apartment of 81-year-old Elizabeth McCray — Marrujo's neighbor."He grabbed me and shook me, and I went down on the floor," McCray said.Marrujo heard McCray's screams and went to help."I squeezed myself between her and him. I put mama on the side, and I jumped on him, and I was punching him and everything," Marrujo said. "And I had the cane against his throat."Marrujo said she didn't want to kill him, so she held him down with her hands."He lifted up and tried to twist my hand. At the same time, I twisted his and turned it around real fast," Marrujo said. "And he was saying, 'you're hurting me, you're hurting me.' And I said, 'I don't care. I don't care what happens to you. You had no right to hurt an elderly person.'"McCray was stunned by her neighbor's bravery."I didn't expect that little lady would be that brave," she said. "I was trembling. I grabbed her by the leg. I said, 'could you be careful; you're gonna kill us.' She said, 'not tonight.'"Police later arrived on the scene and took the intruder into custody. Despite Marrujo's bravery, police say it's not a good idea to attack an intruder."We don't recommend you just jumping in," said Jennie Venzor, a spokesperson for the Fontana Police Department. "We recommend that you dial 911 for emergency assistance, which, in this case, she did that, and she also jumped in. What she told me is that her training kicked in, and it was like a muscle memory. She knew she had to help her friend out."McCray was taken to the hospital for treatment and released the next day. 2001
LONDON, England — A Banksy painting self-destructed right after it was won at a Sotheby's auction last week, and the bidder, whose identity has not been made known, will still go through with the purchase. The London auction house said 1.04 million pounds was paid for "Girl With Balloon", which surprised everyone in the room when the painting partially moved through a shredder concealed in the frame. The painting has been retitled "Love is in the Bin" and authenticated by Banksy, an artist with a face no one has seen. 534
