SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man died Saturday night following an officer-involved shooting in El Cerrito. Police say they received a call just before 8 p.m. from a 70-year-old woman who said her 52-year-old nephew attacked her with a brick at a home on the 5800 block of Adelaide Avenue. Two officers responded to the scene and found the woman, who they say had been hit in the head and chest. Officers found the man in the backyard of the home and tried to arrest him, but they say he struggled.Witnesses say the suspect then picked up a shovel and started swinging at police. "He continued quickly advancing on the officers while swinging the shovel, prompting one officer to fire his Taser, while the second officer fired his service weapon," San Diego Police said in a news release. The suspect was struck by gunfire at least once and died at the scene, police say. The man's identity isn't being released at this time. The suspect’s aunt is expected to be okay and no officers were injured in the incident. The department says one of the officers is a four-year veteran of the department while the other is a 16-year veteran. Gavin Newsom ordered thousands more body bags for distribution to morgues in three counties, including San Diego, state health authorities reported a new high for coronavirus-related deaths and cases.California recorded 53,711 new COVID-19 cases and 293 additional deaths on Wednesday. The state's previous high for deaths was set Saturday with 225.On Tuesday, Newsom ordered 5,000 body bags during a surge in deaths over the past week, averaging over 160 per day."This is a deadly disease, a deadly pandemic, and we're in the middle of it right now," Newsom said Tuesday. "We're near the end, but we're in the middle of the most acute peak as it relates to what we refer to as the third wave -- the third and what we hope is the final wave of this disease."Newsom also said that 60 refrigerated storage units are ready to be mobilized across California should hospitals become overwhelmed with virus fatalities."We just had to order 5,000 additional body bags ... and we just distributed them down to San Diego, Los Angeles, Inyo counties," he said. "That should be sobering. I don't want ... to scare folks, but this is a deadly disease. And we need to be mindful of where we are in this current journey together to the vaccine. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A former longtime San Diego Zoo biologist has pleaded guilty to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the iconic zoo.Matthew John Anderson, 49, of Ramona, Calif., admitted to stealing more than 6,000 through bogus vendor invoices between December 2008 and October 2016, according to the Office of the U.S. Attorney Southern District of California.Investigators say Anderson created 35 fake invoices billing the San Diego Zoo for various payments from purported vendors. The zoo paid the invoices to third parties that then gave the bulk of the payment to Anderson. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 63-year-old man was shot several times during an argument in San Diego’s Jamacha-Lomita neighborhood Friday afternoon.Police say the shooting happened on the 7900 block of Gribble Street just before 4 p.m.According to police, the victim and suspect got into an argument when the 63-year-old was shot three times. The man was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Dianne Rodriguez will be retiring in the next few years after decades of working in the hospitality industry. This year, she decided to build a retirement plan. She spent ,000, construction and permits included, for a pre-built granny flat.Work started in April. The landscaping and final touches were recently completed on a 375-square-foot, one bedroom, one bath tiny home, which she plans to rent out as vacation rental on Airbnb. "Living on a fixed income won't be easy. This will supplement our income and enable us to stay in San Diego, and do some traveling," said Rodriguez.She opened it up to her first tenant this week. The cost of the granny flat will add about 0 dollars to her monthly mortgage. She hopes to take in about ,000 a month from renting it out, which translates into an extra ,700.The company that built her tiny home is Instant Guest Homes.
