SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Drugs and graffiti were just some of the problems filling parks around San Diego, with most of the activity happening during the night hours. A curfew has now been put in place for several parks.Community members and city leaders threw a party Friday morning to celebrate the change. Residents have been rallying for a curfew at City Heights Square Mini Park, which sits in the middle of an assisted living facility for seniors. Neighbors say before the curfew, they observed everything from gangs and drugs at the park. “We are this beautiful community,” says Delia Contreras. “We have kids, we have a lot of good things, but the drugs are no good.”Since the beginning of the year, 217 crimes have been reported within a 1,500 feet radius of the park. The crimes include assault, theft, and vandalism. “To me, San Diego is a paradise, and we need to clean up the whole town,” says Ronald Tieken. City Heights Square Mini Park will now have a nightly curfew from 9 pm to 5 am. There were other parks around the city with the same problems. Cedar Ridge Mini Park, Montclair Neighborhood Park, North Park Community Park and North Park Mini Park. These parks will now have a curfew of midnight to 6 a.m. “It took a lot of time because we didn’t want to take just one site, so we opened it up for other sites to bring their concerns in, and five parks were identified to go forward with it,” says Raul Contreras, with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Five years since it was last open to the public, the iconic "Plunge" swimming pool is finally set to welcome San Diegans at Belmont Park."Oh, we're so excited. It's highly anticipated," said Belmont Park spokesperson Michelle McKee.The pool was one of the original attractions when the amusement park opened in 1925. However, it had run into hard times in recent years and has been closed for much of the last decade. One management company went bankrupt. The next came up with a renovation plan, only to discover dangerous, corroding conditions inside, leading to the pool's closure in 2014. Work finally began in earnest in 2017, tearing out much of the Plunge infrastructure, while trying to maintain a link to its historic nature."It was a wonderful pool," McKee said. "We wanted to maintain the structure of some of those elements, so that remains here in the pool."A signature element, a large mural by the renowned artist Wyland, had to be removed. In its place is a new, bright, open look. Windows surround the pool, giving swimmers a view of the ocean. A retractable roof will help control the climate inside the glass space.The high-end gym company "Fit" is building a club on the upper floors. Fit will manage the pool. Members will have access to the pool. The public can purchase day passes. With a dynamic pricing plan, adult passes will begin at .Some San Diegans who have been to the plunge in the past worry that the price point will drive out locals and turn the Plunge into a tourist haven."I feel like when it's not tourist seaon, like summer when there's not many tourists, it's just going to be there. (KGTV) - As COVID-19 cases continue to increase nationwide, the demand for testing grows.CVS Pharmacy has been providing free drive-thru testing sites across San Diego County, but some have reported significant delays in receiving test results.“I thought I would try CVS because they’re popping up all over for free testing and very convenient drive-thru,” said San Diego resident Michelle Naidenoff.“It’s a self-administered test, had the test done, was given a sheet originally it said 2-4 days for results, and then they had crossed it out the time of the testing and said it could be up to 10 days.”Ten days later, Naidenoff still had no answers.“Then, on the 16th day, I called, and I was on hold a couple of times,” she said after being left on hold for too long, she hung up.Five hours later, Naidenoff said her negative test result popped up on the online website.“16 days, I’m thinking it’s basically useless,” she said. “When it comes to slowing the virus down, obviously contact tracing is very important. The fact that they would have such poor quality of care for follow up was alarming.”According to CVS, all patient samples collected through the testing sites are sent to off-site locations. The independent, third-party labs are then responsible for processing and delivering the results, according to CVS. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- The owner of MetroFlex Gym in Oceanside said he is now in compliance with San Diego County's public health order after refusing to close his doors for months.Lou Uridel fought back against the closure orders of all gyms and fitness centers in California, saying he would lose the business he worked so hard to build if he closed his doors. Uridel also said he provides wellness services that don't fall under the order.Friday, Uridel received a letter from Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, to immediately close.The letter states that MetroFlex Gym was operating indoors in violation of state and county public health orders.Uridel quickly moved some fitness equipment on the sidewalk outside of his gym and is now getting a permit from the City of Oceanside to expand and build a more extensive outdoor gym.He said he would be closed down until later this week while he gets it all squared away, but some services inside will continue."We have nutrition supplement store, food pickup services," he explained.Before Dr. Wooten's letter was sent, Oceanside Police visited Uridel's gym a few times to try to gain voluntary compliance with the public health order.Uridel tells 10News he received positive feedback about his gym's cleanliness, and he went above and beyond to ensure the safety of employees and members."We hired a virologist, and they said the biggest things were capacity, social distancing, and airflow. So that's what we focused on," he said.Uridel said he purchased a high quality disinfecting spray gun for ,000 and bought six industrial-grade fans to circulate the air while leaving front and back doors open at his gym.He said the gym was disinfected every hour, equipment was moved to allow for social distancing, and capacity was limited to 20 percent."I've had 38,100 visits since May 8th, we have ten trainers here, and we've not had one outbreak," he said. "It's just like a nail in our back to be treated like an egregious violator. I've had death threats. I have people calling me a mass murderer, irresponsible and selfish; I don't see myself as selfish for trying to provide employment for ten trainers and staff."Uridel said had he followed the closure orders from the beginning and closed down his gym, he would lose the business he worked so hard to build."You can't keep throwing us on life support and expecting us to stay around," he said. "Businesses aren't light switches; you can't turn us on and off."Uridel was cited back in May for refusing to shut down during the initial orders from the state. He has since hired a lawyer. 2614

SAN DIEGO (KGTV): Dreamers across San Diego have a week's worth of rallies, protests and programs planned on Community College Campuses.Students under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, say it's time to come out of the shadows on campus and show their fellow students, teachers and administrators the role they play."DACA students are here, Dreamers are here, and they’re here to stay," says Miguel Mellado, a DACA student at Southwestern College."We have to really stand up and say we’re here, we’re proud, we’re working hard, and we deserve more," he says.Mellado's parents brought him to America when he was eight years old. He didn't learn he was undocumented until middle school. He says it left him feeling isolated.His desire to find community, and help others do the same, is what led him to help organize this week's "Undocumented Students Week of Action."Events begin Monday at City College, Mesa College, Miramar College and Southwestern College. The San Diego Community College District has already announced their support of the programs.An estimated 1,000 undocumented students are enrolled at those colleges."DACA recipients are some of our hardest working and brightest students, and it is our duty to advocate on their behalf," said San Diego Mesa College President Pamela Luster."Clearly, these deserving students who came to the U.S. as children, who have not been convicted of any crimes and who are earnestly seeking an education to improve their lives, are tremendous assets to our community."But that support has upset some people in San Diego who feel DACA students take opportunities and resources away from other students.Raul Rodriguez, Jr., the California Coordinator for America First Latinos, told 10News that taxpayer-funded schools shouldn't be supporting events like this since the students were brought into the country illegally.Meanwhile, the DACA Act is tied up in courts, after President Trump announced an end to the act in September of 2017. Mellado says he and his fellow Dreamers shouldn't wait for the government to solve the issue."I don’t believe policy helps that much," he says.
