SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans are desperate for affordable housing and scammers are taking notice and using new tricks. 10News investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner spoke to the District Attorney's Office about how the internet is flooded right now with local rentals ads that are fake, and how renters can avoid getting burned.When Nicole Lloyd saw a Craigslist ad for a three-bedroom home in Clairemont for 50 a month, she jumped on it. “It sounded too good to be true, but [I had to] check it out,” she tells us.The person who said he was the owner sent her a text. “He said that he was out-of-state,” says Lloyd.He gave her a code for the front door and told her to let herself in. McHugh says online rental scams are hugely prevalent right now, but most of the time scammers won't let renters see the property before asking for a wire transfer, which makes Lloyd's situation unique. She got to see the home first.“That's kind of what made us believe it might be real,” Lloyd adds.RELATED: Making It In San Diego: Strangers team up to afford the rent10News found the true owner, a home leasing company called Invitation Homes. The company confirmed that the house was being used in a scam.A statement from the company to 10News reads, “With regard to the home on Broadlawn Street, we have seen fraudulent activity, but fortunately no one has fallen victim to the attempted scam at this home. We have posted a sign in the home, as we do in all of our homes, alerting potential residents of potential scams so that they that will be particularly vigilant. We have asked Craigslist to remove the fraudulent listing, which they have (we do not advertise on Craigslist), and we have turned off the self-show option on the home so that prospective residents are able to view the home only if accompanied by an Invitation Homes agent.”“I was on Apartments.com, Zillow, Craigslist and a few other recommended [sites] that people gave me,” says Rebecca Weinrib.RELATED: San Diego's top neighborhoods to get more rental space for the moneyWeinrib admits that even she almost fell for online rental scams when she was recently looking for a place in Little Italy.“I went to law school. I run a company. I started a nonprofit…however, I don't remember seeing this situation two years ago when I was renting,” she adds.Weinrib was bombarded with requests to send money before she was allowed to see the properties. “A lot of them would say, ‘Wire it.’” She tells us a lot of them would also tell her that they don’t live locally.“You'll often see these scams saying that the person you need to talk to is deployed so just send the money and information now and we'll deal with it later,” says McHugh. He adds, “If you can't go inside and see the property before you're required to exchange money or personal identifying information, that's another huge red flag.”McHugh also says that it's best to be cautious when landlords are using auto-generated email addresses and when landlords post ads that contain several grammatical errors. 3405

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diegans will soon have four new restaurants for dining along the San Diego Bay, as Mayor Kevin Faulconer joined Port of San Diego officials and The Brigantine Inc. for the ribbon cutting ceremony Monday for Portside Pier. Portside Pier is an over-the-water dining complex that has been years in the making. It will have four restaurants -- Brigantine on the Bay, Miguel's Cocina, Ketch Grill & Taps and Portside Coffee & Gelato. The dining complex replaced Anthony's Fish Grotto, a staple for 52 years along the bay. The dining complex is now owned by The Brigantine Inc. The restaurants are opening amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The design of the restaurants have plenty of outdoor space to seat about 500 people, with all social distancing guidelines in place. The complex has capacity for about 1,000 people, once pandemic restrictions are lifted. Portside Pier is the first of several projects along the waterfront, to improve and update the embarcadero. The coffee and gelato bar are already open. The other restaurants officially open on July 28. 1090

While we may enjoy the sparkle and booms, your pets may run for their lives.“You don’t want to have them outside where all those loud fireworks are going off,” said San Diego Humane Society spokeswoman Dariel Walker. The organization sees a sudden spike in stray animals around this time of year, she said.Just like on July 4th, many pets who are terrified of loud noises run off in a panic. Walker suggested that owners prevent that by creating a calming environment for animals. “You can even even play music or have the TV on or have some noise in the background to drown out that loud sound of the fireworks,” Walker said. Walker advised pet owners to be prepared with a microchip in case they do run away. The San Diego Humane Society offers microchipping service for .The rice grain-size tracker goes into the back of the neck. It is administered similar to a regular vaccination shot and does not hurt the animal. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego City Council President Georgette Gomez has floated the idea of turning the second floor of Golden Hall into a permanent homeless shelter.Gomez made her comments Tuesday as the City Council unanimously approved a plan to use the second floor as a temporary shelter for three months while a Father Joe's bridge shelter is relocated. The current shelter for women and families at 14th and Commercial will close April 1. The city plans to build a new tent shelter to open on a lot at 17th and Imperial by June 30. Construction will cost million and the city will lease the land for ,000 a month. "So why spend million to put something back when we can actually spend million in maybe long-term leases to try to find a permanent solution," Gomez said. The Golden Hall concourse is about 1.5 miles away, and steps from City Hall. The bottom floor is still used for various events, including naturalization ceremonies and performances. Greg Block, a spokesman for the mayor, said long-term at Golden Hall wouldn't work for Father Joe's."For their clients, they need to be close to their main campus," he said. "Going back and forth via shuttle and all kinds of things isn't a workable solution for these folks that are there longer term."Bill Bolstad, chief revenue officer for Father Joe's, said the 17th and Imperial location would help residents get health and child care and employment services. "All kinds of things that are infinitely easier to provide when it's right next door, that's why we're very excited about the location down there," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Restaurants up and down 5th Avenue in the Gaslamp District are gearing up for yet another three days of crowded on-street dining.This upcoming weekend will see 24 eateries offering service on the asphalt, up from the original eight that participating during the launch on June 18. But as they bask in the opportunity, restaurants on surrounding streets are asking - what about them?"It's a ghost town, especially at night," said Patrizia Bronchi, who owns Operacaffe on Fourth Avenue. "I'm really scared to have to close the restaurant because it's not possible to go on like this."Bronchi says revenue at Operacaffe is down more than 70 percent. She depends on crowds from the Balboa Theater across the street and visitors to hotels and conventions. All of that is nonexistent amid the Coronavirus outbreak.Bronchi says she is happy that 5th Avenue restaurants are seeing the increased business, but that the crowds are not spilling over onto 4th Avenue. Michael Trimble, who heads the Gaslamp Quarter Association, says the group cannot also close 4th and 6th Avenues due to traffic concerns.However, he said the association wants to help with new marketing, decorative lighting and parklets - such as replacing some parking spaces with permanent outdoor dining areas. "We really are trying to do what we can to support all of the merchants in the Gaslamp Quarter," he said. On Thursday to Saturday, 5th Avenue will be closed from L to F streets to allow on-street dining. During the second weekend of July, the number of participating restaurants will expand to 27. 1595
