SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Despite carefully measured protocols for distance learning and on-campus housing, San Diego State University is continuing to see new cases of coronavirus among students.SDSU ended its first week of the fall semester Friday announcing three new cases of COVID-19. Since the start of the 2020-21 school year, SDSU has reported seven positive cases.The unidentified students all live off-campus and were only on campus to seek testing at the Student Health Services Outdoor COVID-19 Test Collection Booth, university officials said. The three students did not interact with any SDSU employees or spaces outside of the SHS, according to officials."We have quickly identified and are speaking with the individuals known to have been in direct contact with these students. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Health experts are weighing in after a local nurse tested positive for COVID-19 more than a week after receiving the Pfizer vaccine.In a Facebook message posted on December 18, Matthew W., an ER nurse at at two different local hospitals, talked about receiving the Pfizer vaccine that day. He told ABC 10News his arm was sore for a day but he suffered no other side effects.Six days later on Christmas Eve -- after working a shift in the COVID-19 unit -- he became sick. He got the chills and later came down with muscle aches and fatigue.The day after Christmas, he went to a drive-up hospital testing site and tested positive for COVID-19."It's not unexpected at all. If you work through the numbers, this is exactly what we’d expect to happen if someone was exposed," said Dr. Christian Ramers, an infectious disease specialist with Family Health Centers of San Diego. He serves on the clinical advisory panel for the county’s vaccine rollout.He points out, it is possible Matthew was infected before receiving the vaccine, as the incubation period may be as much as two weeks. Dr. Ramers says if Matthew did contract it after the vaccine, it’s still in line with what we know."We know from the vaccine clinical trials that it’s going to take about 10 to 14 days for you to start to develop protection from the vaccine," said Dr. Ramers.Dr. Ramers says he knows of several other local cases where health care workers became infected around the time they received the vaccine. He says all the cases illustrate the fact that results aren’t immediate. Even after you start receiving some protection, it won't be full protection."That first dose we think gives you somewhere around 50%, and you need that second dose to get up to 95%," said Dr. Ramers.Dr. Ramers says Matthew’s story also shows that even with vaccines, the pandemic isn’t going to turn around instantly."You hear heath practitioners being very optimistic about it being the beginning of the end, but it’s going to be a slow roll, weeks to months as we roll out the vaccine," said Dr. Ramers.He adds this case is a good reminder of why masks, handwashing, and other COVID protocols are important, even after receiving the vaccine.Matthew says he’s feeling better since his symptoms peaked on Christmas Day but still feels fatigued. 2323

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hours after Navy officials said all fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard were extinguished, smoke was visible coming from the vessel at Naval Base San Diego early Friday morning.Radio scanner traffic obtained by ABC 10News indicated crews at the scene reported at least two fires onboard the ship and called for evacuations at around 1 a.m. Friday. The 10News Breaking News Tracker observed smoke coming from the ship’s front end.At around 5 a.m., a Navy spokesperson confirmed to ABC 10News that no evacuations were ordered and all fires were out. The spokesperson said investigators were looking into the matter.On Thursday afternoon, Navy officials said all known fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard were declared out. The blaze on the ship erupted on the morning of July 12, and the firefighting efforts involving hundreds of crew members and thousands of aerial water drops took four full days.Navy officials said they will not know the exact cause of the fire until the ship can be inspected fully.ABC 10News learned Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday will be at Naval Base San Diego on Friday to inspect the USS Bonhomme Richard.During a Thursday afternoon press briefing, Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck described the 22-year-old ship as ravaged -- its melted aluminum superstructure bent at a 45-degree angle -- but not dead in the water."The ship can be repaired," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Driving on roads in San Diego during the holiday season can be a headache, as residents and tourists alike deal with increased traffic caused by extra congestion. This year, during Thanksgiving week, the roads have been a little bit safer, according to statistics released by the California Highway Patrol. San Diego County DUI arrests and auto fatalities were both down from last year, for the time period between Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. and Friday at 6:00 a.m. Going into the weekend there have been a total of 21 DUI arrests recorded in San Diego, a decrease from 27 arrests from 2017. RELATED: Check 10News?traffic updatesThe results are also reflected across the state, where the 294 DUI arrests are down from 386 a year ago. There have been no fatal car accidents in San Diego, compared to one at this time last year. Across the state there were 17 car accidents resulting in death, compared to 19 in 2017. The CHP reports that of the 13 fatalities that occurred in their jurisdiction, five were not wearing seat belts.  1142
