Nearly a year after Hurricane Maria wreaked havoc on Puerto Rico, officials there say power has been restored to most of the island's residents.Of the nearly 1.4 million customers who lost electric service after the storm, just 25 remain in the dark, the island's electric provider tweeted Monday. The declaration, coming about two months into the start of the Atlantic hurricane season, is a significant development from Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority. The beleaguered state-owned utility has struggled over the last year to recover from last September's storm, which decimated the island's electrical grid. Thousands of people were still without power in June.CNN has reached out to PREPA and has not received a response. The damage and the responseHurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico as a Category 4 hurricane, the strongest storm to hit the US territory in 85 years. It resulted in the largest blackout in US history and the second-largest in world history.More than 10,000 people were still without electricity at the start of hurricane season in June, eight months after the storm.Since the storm, PREPA has come under fire for signing a 0 million contract to restore power with a small, Montana-based firm that had only two employees at the time. Minneapolis city council passed 2021 budget funding that includes cutting .7 million from the city's police department and redirecting those funds to social programs, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, CNN and CBS News. The 2021 budget is the first one the city has passed since the death of George Floyd at the hands of police in May. Floyd's death sparked a nationwide protest movement against police brutality.According to the Star Tribune, the .7 million in police budget cuts will be redistributed to fund mental health crisis teams, as well as train 911 dispatchers to assess mental health crisis calls. The budget cuts will also allow other employees to handle theft and property damage reports. However, the Star Tribune notes that the budget keeps in place a plan for the department to hire more officers in future years. The council initially planned to pass a budget that would drop department staffing levels from 770 to 750 in 2022 but kept in place the department's current staffing target of 888 to avoid a veto from Mayor Jacob Frey."My colleagues were right to leave the targeted staffing level unchanged from 888 and continue moving forward with our shared priorities," Frey said in a statement. "The additional funding for new public safety solutions will also allow the City to continue upscaling important mental health, non-police response, and social service components in our emergency response system."The new budget comes as progressive Democrats call on local municipalities to "defund the police" and re-allocate those funds to social services. Other major cities like New York City and Albuquerque, New Mexico have removed funding from departments or shifted some emergency responsibilities away from armed police officers.Floyd died in May when a Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes as they attempted to take him into custody for using counterfeit money to buy cigarettes. Several other officers stood by as Officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd's neck as he struggled to breathe. Chauvin and three other officers face charges in connection to Floyd's death. 2140

MILWAUKEE — Eight Sisters at Notre Dame of Elm Grove, a retirement home near Milwaukee, died from COVID-19 in a week despite the home’s best efforts.“The Sisters, were being extra careful in terms of getting their meals in rooms and they can’t congregate together,” Sister Debra Sciano, Provincial Leader of the School Sisters of Notre Dame Central Pacific Province said. “More testing, being tested twice a week for the virus.”Sciano says they are heartbroken to lose these eight women. Combined, they had over half a millennium of service to the community. All educators in their own right, their reach went far beyond the walls of the School Sisters of Notre Dame retirement home.“Every one of our sisters is really important,” Sciano said. “Not only to us, but we feel they have touched thousands of lives we’ll never be aware of.” 842

MUSKEGON, Mich. - Organizing school supplies such as crayons, notebooks, and folders then packing them into backpacks is a labor of love for Muskegon sisters Payton and Madelyn Chittenden.“If you see something wrong, you should at least try to fix it,” said Payton. The sisters are working to make a difference for students this school year.“We donate school supplies to kids that… can’t afford it,” said Madelyn. In July, FOX17 introduced the sisters and their mission to collect school supplies for their classmates with families impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. They figured they would be able to pack a few dozen backpacks, but as the donations picked up so did the project’s impact.“It’s just making those kids smile and not worry about the coronavirus,” said Melissa Chittenden, mom.Melissa says monetary and supply donations have added to over ,000, which is enough to create more than 950 backpacks for kindergarten through fourth-grade students at Reeths Puffer Schools, Muskegon Public Schools, Holton Public Schools, and Fruitport Community Schools. That’s 15 to 25 kits per grade at each district’s elementary schools.“It means so much to me as a parent that this is what my kids are focusing on during a time with the corona, they’re not really worried about catching the germs, they’re worried about what can we do to make this a better place?” said Melissa.Teachers will distribute the kits to their students once classes start.Payton and Madelyn believe it could connect students during a year in which not much can be shared and teach them all a lesson of love.“It doesn’t matter if you’re helping a little or a lot, you’re still changing the world,” said Madelyn.“It will help them learn and they will know that they’re special and someone cares about them,” said Payton.Marisa Oberle from WXMI in Grand Rapids, Michigan first reported this story. 1876
