DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - Polo spectators will enjoy a new venue this month as the San Diego Polo Classic moves to the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The event, previously held on the beach at the Hotel Del Coronado, will take space Sept. 28 at the Del Mar Arena. Two games will take place, including one pitting the Porsche San Diego team against an all-Hawaiian Tommy Bahamas team. During a polo match, players on horseback try to hit as many goals as possible. Each team has four players. The match is broken into four time periods called chukkas, each lasting seven minutes. Much of the sport is about what happens off the field. DEL MAR, CA (KGTV) -- From the starting line to the finish line, opening day to the final race of the season, the Del Mar racetrack prides itself on injury-free races. And with the Summer 2020 season having just wrapped up, the track was ranked as the safest racetrack in the country for the third straight year."It didn't come easily," says Del Mar Thoroughbred Club President Joe Harper. "A few years ago we just woke up to the fact that these horse injuries were climbing, and we had to figure out what was going on."So four years ago, they decided to make some changes. All in the hopes of making the sport safer for the horses, and the jockeys. And it all started with dissecting the track."We found the best guy in the world, the best dirt guy there is, and it was Dennis Moore. He took the track completely apart and told us there were a few problems. We knew it would cost a lot of money, but I said spend all you want."Joe says they also stepped up the evaluations on every racehorse. And for a summer racing season, that means close to 2,000."We go back through our databases, and find what this horses have been doing, where they have been, and how they have been training."The track has also increased the number of veterinarians at the track."In the morning during workouts we've hired more vets to come in and watch the horses. We also have veterinarians go in and look at the horses in the stalls, and the receiving barns. There are vets everywhere."This past season, they had to euthanize one horse injured in a race, as well as two other horses injured while training. "What we're really looking for is zero but compared to where we were, and compared to other tracks, for the last three years we've been the safest track in North America." 1767

DETROIT - The bodies of 11 infants were found in the ceiling of a former funeral home on Detroit's east side Friday evening, according to Detroit Police. Police say the bodies were found in a box and in a small casket. Cadaver dogs were on scene, and in all police found the 11 bodies of infants and stillborns. The Cantrell Funeral Home was shut down earlier this year due to several violations and "deplorable, unsanitary conditions." Police say a tip through the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) sparked the investigation. LARA reported Cantrell Funeral Home had 60 days to either assign its existing prepaid contracts to another person registered under the Prepaid Act and notify the Department and contract buyers of the assignment within 30 days of the assignment.The funeral home's other option was to cancel their current contracts and issue refunds to each contract buyer, providing copies of refund checks and correspondence to each contract buyer to the Department within 90 days, unless the Department modifies, vacates, or extends the terms of the Order.A spokesperson from LARA has released this statement regarding their investigation: 1228

DENVER, Colo. — Riding a bike marks a milestone for children. While it can provide a sense of freedom for some children, many kids with physical disabilities don't have the opportunity to enjoy the experience. That was almost the case for one young Denver boy, but thanks to a family friend, he can now pedal to his heart's content.Keeping up with Alex Braun, 5, on the playground can be a challenge. He moves around quickly.His mother, Amber Braun, calls Alex "a ray of sunshine.""He is so funny, he is our little comedian," she said. "We call him the mayor because he just loves to talk."He also loves to play, but unlike the rest of the kids, it takes him a little longer to reach his destination."I can't really run, just one foot at a time," Alex said.His mom said he can't feel much from his knees down.She said she'll never forget the two doctors who advised her to terminate her pregnancy after diagnosing her baby, Alex, with spina bifida. The birth defect is a condition that affects the spine. It can cause physical and intellectual disabilities that range from mild to severe, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."Kind of like a cute orange that was on his back, so the spine opened up — the spinal cord kind of came out, which affected the way that he walks today," Amber said.Alex has undergone six surgeries throughout his lifetime. His family has traveled the country for foot casts to help correct his clubfeet and he has attended therapy nearly all of his life. Amber said they work his muscles every day to make them stronger."We give him all the opportunities that we give our daughter and our son," she said.This summer, Amber said she tapped into a spina bifida mom's group on Facebook and asked about bikes for children with the condition. She said she was quickly directed to the nonprofit Adaptive Adventures. The organization provides outdoor sports opportunities for people with physical disabilities. The organization loaned Amber a unique bike to fit Alex's needs.Amber posted a video of Alex on the Adaptive Adventure bike. Christine Garcia, a family friend who met Amber before Alex was born, said the post made her want to take action."My momma heart exploded," Garcia said. "I just got overwhelmed with a feeling of you know what, Alex needs that bike and we have to make this happen."She reached out to Adaptive Adventures and asked to purchase the bike and set up a GoFundMe to raise ,500."The money was raised within days of being posted," Garcia said.Amber said she vividly remembers the priceless expression on Alex's face."He was like, 'What! It's mine?'" she remembered.
