(KGTV) -- The San Diego Children's Discovery Museum in Escondido has been quiet since mid-March, when they had to close their doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic."It's been hard, and in the beginning, it was very eerie," said museum Executive Director Wendy Taylor.Normally, the museum plays host to a few hundred visitors every day, and on a busy day, that number may reach as high as 500 guests.However, for the last four months, the museum has been nothing more than the sound of silence. In fact, over the last month, when other museums were allowed to reopen their doors, the Children's Discovery Museum did not."We don't really fall into the traditional museum category in terms of the reopening. Kids’ museums are specifically called out in the state guidelines as not being a traditional museum. So, in the guidelines for museums, it specifically calls out that interactive areas should remain closed,” Taylor said.Taylor told ABC 10News she's very proud of the way the museum has adjusted during these uncertain times. They've had to become more creative in all their activities, from camps to storytelling, and everything has gone online."Families really needed some support. They needed something regular and normal, that their kids could see and engage in,” said Taylor.Storytime has been very popular with the children, as the museum receives viewers from all over the world. The numbers have been so impressive, as they reach thousands of views per story."Typically, every story time reaches thousands of people during the course of the 24 hours that it is up,” Taylor said.The museum also had a virtual art contest where a winner was announced on Facebook Live. (KGTV) — An Escondido home that was engulfed in flames early Friday reignited for a second time later the same day.The home in the 800 block of Via Rancho Parkway first ignited just before 2:40 a.m., according to Escondido Fire Department. Fire investigators believe that the fire started in the home's garage and spread to the attic.One adult, three children, and five pets were inside the home when the fire began. The pets woke up one of the children, prompting the family to escape the home.One of the pets, a cat, died in the fire, according to Escondido Fire. The American Red Cross helped the family find lodging after being displaced.Later Friday, just before 6 p.m., the home re-ignited, prompting another round of firefighting.The cause of both fires has not been identified. 811

FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) - A grateful family is speaking out after a Camp Pendleton Marine helped save their trapped baby as flames engulfed their car.Two Mondays ago, Tony Hurley, his wife and 1-year-old daughter were in their car on East Mission Road, on their way to a relative's home, around 5 p.m. Hurley says a gas can fell off a truck in front of him. Fire officials say it became wedged under the engine, leading to sparks as it dragged on the road."Almost like a firework going off ... As we pulled over, the car is already on fire. Flames were surrounding the perimeter of car," said Hurley.A frantic Hurley, along with his wife, got out and went to the back seat to get their daughter, but he says the latching mechanism for the car seat base was stuck."That's when I look up, and I'm face to face with a Marine on the other side of the car," said Hurley.That Marine was Gunnery Sergeant Kyle Wetter, who just happened to be driving by."At that point is when I used my pocketknife to cut the car seat belt that was holding the baby's seat int the car, so the dad could get the car seat out," said Wetter in a video interview released by the Marine Corps.As the family scrambled to safety, Wetter grabbed their belongings out of the car before also getting to safety. About a minute later, three different explosions rocked the car. After a few more minutes, flames had consumed the car."I don’t even want to imagine what could have happened if he hadn’t been on scene," said Hurley.Hurley says the Marine's efforts ended with the best Christmas gift ever: his family was alive and well."He's definitely a hero in my book, and I'm more than grateful," said Hurley."It's what I expect any person to do in that moment, is to help someone in need. I don't think I'm special by no means. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Felicita County Park is just south of Escondido and is one of the largest and oldest parks in San Diego County. It’s named after a Native American woman who helped preserve history more than a century ago.Dove Toler is a San Pasqual Tribal Council member and has studied the rich Native American history of his own tribe, writing a book about his family’s past, and the history of the surrounding San Diego area. He said one of the most unique factors about Felicita LaChappa was the information she possessed.Toler said it’s estimated that LaChappa was born around 1820 during the Mexican era. He said during this era, Native people were dealing with the invasions of many different other cultures in addition to battling disease, so it’s incredible that she survived this period. This gave a window into a time period that many did not remember or live through.“She was able to survive, she didn’t get the diseases, she was able to marry, she was able to prosper in a sense that she survived,” he said, adding that, “Felicita survived during that turbulent time, those that were here were able to photograph her, interview her and now in honor of her, name this beautiful park after Felicita.”The park’s property was bought by San Diego County in 1929 and was named after LaChappa to honor her. To this day, there are still holes in some large rocks, evidence of the Native American people who once lived there. Toler estimates those artifacts to be 3,000 or 4,000 years old.Tolder added that the county has done a good job of adding signage around the park to educate the public on the history of LaChappa and the other Native Americans who once lived there. 1696

(KGTV) - The dramatic collapse of a tree in front of an Escondido family’s home was caught on camera during a Red Flag Warning Tuesday.Mike and Selene Neumann woke up to howling winds early Tuesday morning at their home on Pico de la Loma.Selene walked out to record video and saw a 60-foot tall tree laying across the yard and the top of their 1997 BMW Z3 Roadster.The tree, an Italian Cypress, mangled the convertible top, shattered the windows, and bent the door.When the Neumanns saw the video from their Ring camera, they were “astounded”.The fallen tree had been in place since the home was built in 1979.Experts checked out other trees on the Neumann’s property and removed a similar Italian Cypress near the uprooted tree. 756
