LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson says Christmas gatherings can’t go ahead and non-essential shops must close in London and much of southern England as he imposed a new, higher level of coronavirus restrictions to curb sharply spreading infections. Johnson said the capital and other areas in southern England will move to an even stricter Tier 4 alert category that requires non-essential shops, hairdressers and indoor leisure venues to close after the end of business hours Saturday. Johnson also said that a planned five-day easing of socializing rules that would allow up to three households to meet in “Christmas bubbles” will be canceled for Tier 4 areas. In the rest of England, people will be allowed to meet in Christmas bubbles for just one day instead of five, as the government originally planned.“It is with a very heavy heart that I must tell you we cannot proceed with Christmas as planned,” Johnson said.A fast-moving new variant of the coronavirus that is more than 70% more transmissible than existing strains appears to be driving the rapid spread in London and southern England, Johnson said. London now has the highest infection rates in England.“There’s no evidence to suggest it is more lethal or causes more severe illness,” he stressed, or that vaccines will be less effective against it.England’s chief medical officer, Chris Whitty, said the U.K. has alerted the World Health Organization that the new variant identified this week appears to be accelerating the spread of COVID-19. The government’s scientific advisers came to that conclusion based on preliminary modelling figures, and they are continuing to analyze the available data, he said. 1699

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A China Airlines flight crew spotted what appeared to be a person flying a jet pack 6,000 feet above the ground near LAX Wednesday, less than two months after two separate airline crews reported seeing a jet pack in the Cudahy and South Gate areas.China Airlines flight 006 was approaching LAX about 1:45 p.m. when the crew "reported seeing what appeared to be someone in a jet pack at an approximate altitude of 6,000 feet, about seven miles northwest of Los Angeles International Airport," the Federal Aviation Administration said. The FAA is also investigating an Aug. 30 sighting of what appeared to be a person in a jet pack about 3,000 feet above the ground in the Cudahy and South Gate areas, but investigators have not been able to verify those reports, the FAA's Ian Gregor said Wednesday.RELATED: FBI releases map of Sunday's 'guy in a jet pack' in Los AngelesAt the time of the August sightings, the pilot of American Airlines flight 1997 radioed the LAX tower to make the unusual report of somebody apparently flying at about 3,000 feet with a jet pack. The plane was flying northwest of the junction of the 710 and the Century (105) freeways, according to a map released by the FBI. More specifically, it appears the plane was in the area west of the 710, east of San Juan Avenue, north of Firestone Boulevard and south of Cudahy Park."Tower, American 1997. We just passed a guy in a jet pack," the pilot said on the August radio transmission. An air-traffic controller -- noticeably taken aback by the report -- responded, "American 1997, OK, thank you for the update. Left side or right side?""Off the left side," the pilot replied, "at maybe, uh, 300 yards or so, at our altitude."At least one other pilot, aboard a Southwest Airlines flight that August, also spotted the unusual aviator: "Tower, we just saw the guy pass by us," the pilot reported. The LAX tower alerted an inbound JetBlue pilot to beware of "a person with a jet pack reported 300 yards south of the L.A. final at about 3,000 feet." The pilot responded, "We heard and are definitely looking."The bewildered air-traffic controller responded, "Only in L.A."Further information about Wednesday's sighting was not immediately available from the FAA. 2255

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nick Cannon has apologized for "hurtful and divisive" anti-Semitic comments that led ViacomCBS to cut ties with the TV host and producer. Cannon produced "Wild 'n Out," a comedy improv series for VH1, the ViacomCBS-owned cable channel. Cannon says in a series of apology tweets that he had spoken with several Jewish leaders Wednesday and was committed to better educating himself in the future. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hospitals in central and Southern California are quickly running out of intensive care unit beds for coronavirus patients. State officials are poised to extend the strictest stay-at-home orders there as conditions worsen before the post-holiday surge hits. The situation is already dire, and the worst is expected to come in the next few weeks after Christmas and New Year’s travelers return home. California hit 2 million confirmed coronavirus cases on Christmas Eve, becoming the first state to reach the grim milestone. State stay-at-home orders for the San Joaquin Valley and Southern California are set to expire Monday but Gov. Gavin Newsom has signaled they would not be allowed to lapse. 722
