CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The budget issues at the Sweetwater Union High School District appear to be worse than originally predicted, and it has cost some teachers their jobs. On Monday night, the district's school board voted to cut 34 temporary teaching positions in the district's adult education program. One of the teachers losing their jobs, Dottie Giffen, told the board members at the public meeting, "You could say sorry a million times, and the mess that you got us into does not make any of us feel better."Many parents say they are fed up with the cuts and want someone to be held accountable. Giffen said of the district's leadership: "We have no faith, no trust. We want the district cleared out. We want to start over fresh."According to an audit released at the school board meeting on Dec. 3, the district is in its current financial state because of a number of issues, including internal borrowing, unsustainable salary increases, and a decline in student enrollment.The new audit was first reported by The Voice of San Diego, showing the district is borrowing money faster than it can pay back, taking money from Mello-Roos fees on people’s property taxes. This fiscal year alone the will borrow million dollars in addition to the million they already owe. Parents are now hoping the county or state will take over and balance the budget. One parent told 10News he wants the district employees out, replaced by someone with a fresh set of eyes. County education officials told 10News they are monitoring the situation and issued this statement:“The San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) continues to monitor and work with the Sweetwater Union High School District to resolve the district’s 2018-19 budget shortfalls. Ensuring the students of Sweetwater Union High School District are supported and provided every opportunity to succeed is the highest priority of the district and SDCOE.”The district also sent 10News a statement reacting to the audit:“Over the past few months the Sweetwater Union High School District has faced very significant challenges with respect to our organizational budget. As we have previously outlined, several factors such as increased costs to the district and decreased enrollment and attendance have placed us in a very difficult position.However, Sweetwater, like many other districts across the state, has endured challenges like this in the past. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Homeowners in Eastlake are frustrated with a plan to develop a storage facility near their homes. The proposed location is in an empty space between Eastlake High School and Antigua, a gated community of townhomes. The facility would be a recreational storage facility, for boats, cars and containers. The City of Chula Vista's planning department would have to approve the proposal. Homeowners are hoping they don't. Neighbors like Carmen Bermen say the plans are going to lower their property values and attract the wrong crowd. On Saturday, they started posting warning flyers around their community to warn other neighbors. Bermen was the first homeowner to notice the plans. She says the city had sent out two notices in 2016. The last notice arrived on Thanksgiving week. 10News obtained a copy of that notice letting homeowners know they had until November 26th to send in any written comments or petitions. The vote would take place on November 27th. After emailing the city, residents say officials told them they'd have a public hearing in January on the issue, instead of voting on it in closed session. 10News reached out to the city for comment on this issue, a spokesperson told us it's up to the planning department to put the item on the agenda for the community to go and express their concerns during public comment. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - UTC Aerospace Systems plans to wind down manufacturing at its Chula Vista aircraft plant beginning early next year, eliminating around 300 jobs, it was reported Friday.The company -- a division of Farmington, Connecticut-based conglomerate United Technologies -- said the decision stems from ending production of certain commercial aircraft models, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.The Chula Vista plant builds aerodynamic engine pods and mounts for customers such as Boeing and Airbus.UTC Aerospace plans to keep an after-market spare parts distribution, engineering test labs and administrative jobs in Chula Vista, according to the Union-Tribune."We remain committed to being in Chula Vista," Stacey MacNeil, vice president of communications for UTC Aerospace told the newspaper. "There will still be 1,500 jobs there. We are not shutting down the entire location."The closure of manufacturing, however, will end production of aircraft components at the plant, which has been building planes and supplying aircraft sub-systems since Fred Rohr founded Rohr Aircraft Co. in 1940, according to the Union-Tribune."We recognize the impact this decision will have on our employees and their families, and will not begin the wind-down until 2019," the company said in a statement. "We expect the entire process to take place over a two-year period."The layoffs include about 265 sheet metal workers who are members of the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers, according to the Union-Tribune. Non-union supervisors, purchasers and other salaried workers involved in manufacturing also will lose their jobs.In July, UTC Aerospace Systems notified the union of the planned shutdown, according to the Union-Tribune.The first round of layoffs is expected in the first quarter of next year, with a second round slated late in the year. (KGTV) — A Chula Vista man says he got a screeching, costly surprise after he started his car Wednesday morning.Along Regency Way, just before 6:30 a.m., Jimmy got into his Toyota Corolla S, which was parked in the street."Started the car. As I was pulling out, felt my car lurch to the side," said Jimmy, who asked us not to use his last name.The lurch came amid the most awful of noises."Pretty much like a crash ... felt the scraping of my rotor on the asphalt ... and then pretty much my car slammed into the asphalt itself. Traumatized and scared of what happened," said Jimmy.His heart sank as he got out and stared at the driver's side wheels, which had fallen off."My lug nuts were completely missing, all ten of them on the left side," said Jimmy.His repair estimate: a staggering ,500. Two blocks away the same morning, another driver shared a similar fate because of stolen lug nuts. Called “Salt Drift Pointe” the owners say they wanted to honor the industrial history driven by the old salt ponds that helped move the region from farming to industry. One aimed at helping the city bring in more tourists. Lemons, oranges and lots of celery once dominated the landscape of Chula Vista.
