BEIJING, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- A cold front is forecast to sweep across northwest and central China over the next few days, as thousands of stranded motorists wait for highways in southwest China to reopen after freezing rain prompted their closure.A cold front will sweep across northwestern China Sunday and Monday, bringing temperature drops and strong winds, the China Meteorological Administration forecast in a statement on its website Sunday.Temperatures will fall 6 to 8 degrees Celsius in northwestern China and eastern parts of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, with some parts seeing a drop of over 10 degrees Celsius. The cold front will move eastward and affect most of central and eastern China on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the statement.A worker clears snow on the ancient city wall of Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, Jan. 2, 2011.Northern regions will see temperature drops of 4 to 8 degrees Celsius, with temperatures in some parts dropping 10 degrees Celsius, the statement said.Light to moderate snow or sleet will fall on the eastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, in northwestern China, and in regions along the Yellow, Huaihe and Yangtze rivers over the coming three days. Both southwest Guizhou and central Hunan provinces will see heavy snowfalls and some parts of the two provinces will experience freezing rain, according to the forecast. In the last 24 hours as of 8 a.m. Sunday, freezing rain had lashed 62 counties and cities in Guizhou. Most expressways in Guizhou were closed Sunday due to freezing rain that has stranded some 6,200 people on highways and some 11,800 others in transportation stations, according to provincial transportation authorities.Transportation authorities have initiated an emergency response, dispatching 545 emergency vehicles and 4,200 personnel since Saturday afternoon to save people from the freezing rain. The rescuers are trying to evacuate the trapped passengers and drivers to nearby villages, service stations and the office buildings of the province's transportation department, said Chen Mengren, director of the department. The local civil affairs department has delivered food, 550 quilts, 800 coats and 4,000 bottles of water to the relief sites set up along the closed highways. The closing of a section of China National Highway 210 in Guizhou at 7 p.m. Saturday had stranded some 1,500 vehicles as of 5 p.m., leaving more than 7,000 occupants trapped in Nandan County in neighboring Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, according to Nandan's publicity department.Highway closing in Guizhou also incurred traffic jam in neighboring Hunan Province, trapping more than 6,000 passengers on a highway leading to Guizhou. As of 8.p.m., most of the stranded passengers had been relocated to the nearby Xinhuang County.According to Guizhou's transportation department, the highway is unlikely to open until Monday and the transportation conditions in the next few days will not be optimistic as more cold fronts are forecast to hit the province from Wednesday to Saturday.Snow and freezing rain have also hit Hunan Province. But meteorological authorities said the possibility of the province suffering from harsh conditions similar to those in the winter of 2008 is small.

BEIJING, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- China Thursday expressed the hope that the pricing difference on natural gas imported from Russia would be narrowed through joint efforts from both sides.Gu Jun, deputy director-general of the National Energy Administration's international department, made the remarks at a news briefing on Premier Wen Jiabao's upcoming visit to Russia and Tajikistan.Though companies from both sides had made many efforts in this regard, a certain difference still existed in the pricing of natural gas imported from Russia, Gu said, calling for additional sincerity to be demonstrated on the pricing talks by the two sides.Talks on this issue will be also a part of Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan's upcoming visit to Russia, she said.In 2009, Russia inked a framework agreement with China on annually supplying at most 70 billion cubic meters of natural gas to China, but they still did not reach an agreement on the supplying price.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao will pay official visits to Russia and Tajikistan from Nov. 22 to 25 at the invitation of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Tajikistan Prime Minister Akil Akilov.During the visits, Premier Wen Jiabao will attend the 15th Chinese-Russian prime ministers meeting and the ninth prime ministers meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's drug watchdog has launched a campaign to expose and crack down on illegal spread and selling of drugs on the Internet."Food and drug administration departments at all levels should explore effective methods to stop the sale of fake or inferior-quality drugs, especially those advertised and sold on the Internet," said Shao Mingli, head of the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), Tuesday at a meeting.According to SFDA's monitoring on six major search engines including Google and Yahoo, after typing the key words of "medicine" plus a type of common disease, such as "diabetes" or "high blood pressure," 10 to 30 percent of search results contained illegal drug-related information.Figures show that, among 196 web pages being monitored, 96 percent did not have or failed to show certificates for drug-related trades or other services. Some 39 percent have no Internet Content Provider (ICP) records in the database of telecommunication management departments.ICP is a permit to run web sites in China.According to the SFDA, these illegal sites usually advertise or sell drug products in the name of large hospitals or research institutes. Some even forged pages of the SFDA drug database to fool buyers that their drugs had been approved by the administration. The campaign is part of a nationwide crackdown on the violation of intellectual property rights and the production and distribution of fake and shoddy products, which began earlier this month.

LONDON, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- The British business sector was pleased at the successful visit this week of Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang which concluded on Wednesday.During the four-day visit, Li signed business agreements with an estimated value of more than 4 billion U.S. dollars with the British government."China is vital to the UK economy. China is now the world's largest goods exporter and the UK's largest goods export market outside the U.S. and EU. We are keen to realize the immense potential for deepening and broadening areas of commercial cooperation," said British Minister of State for Trade and Investment Lord Green during the visit. The British coalition government was faced with a near-record public spending deficit of 149 billion pounds (about 236.5 billion dollars) and has chosen to tackle it immediately with the deepest set of cuts to public spending since the Second World War.In such an economic climate, Vice Premier Li's visit to Britain brought welcome contracts but it also brought wider agreements that will bear fruit over a longer period, and that has been hailed as a great success. In an interview with Xinhua after Li's visit, Andy Scott, director international of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), hailed the visit's success, the achievements of the deal itself, and the longer-term prospects which were very positive.Commenting on the visit, and on the wider China-British relationship, he said, "in the long-term prospects are very positive. They are positive on the political front, they are positive on the business front. And from a political point of view I think it is very telling that this government here in the UK ... has made international trade investment one of the top priorities for Prime Minister David Cameron and right across his Cabinet."Scott said that Cameron's visit to China last November, when he headed the largest trade delegation from Britain to China and the largest ministerial delegation, was a sign of Britain's keenness to do business with China. Scott said he believed there were more ministerial visits planned."That's all extremely positive and I think it demonstrates that at a political level as well as at a business level, China is seen strategically as being a crucially important partner for the UK, and I think this visit -- this very successful visit this week -- will only further help to reinforce that relationship," he added. The headline-grabbing part of Li's visit, apart from the loan of the pandas, was the largest single deal announced this week, allowing the import of 40,000 Jaguar Landrover vehicles into the Chinese market.Scott hailed this as demonstrating "the continuing strengths and this continuing strengthening" of the Sino-British relationship. The monetary value of deals announced was important, but Scott stressed the importance of framework deals which were agreed upon during Li's visit."They weren't necessarily contracts that were being signed there and then, yesterday or today. They were setting the framework and they will themselves be providing further opportunities to develop on those frameworks," he said.In addition, he stressed "professional services, the retail sector, design, the creative area, and the whole engineering consultancy arena" where Britain has goods which China wants in its infrastructure development.Scott particularly welcomed Chinese investment into Britain, and hoped that it would continue the momentum achieved recently."We are increasingly seeing China now investing directly in UK companies and that we see as being very positive," he said. That was now "a further example of where the whole relationship with China is changing; it is not just about physical goods, it is about investment, it is about capital coming into the UK," he added.
