SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – As more people are being hospitalized with COVID-19 across Southern California, some health care systems worry that lack of hospital staffing could become a big issue.“We’ve got to take care of our health care workers, or we’re not going to have them to take care of the patients,” said Meghan Jaremczuk, a registered nurse and the Director of Progressive and Acute Care at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.Like many health care workers this year, Jaremczuk hasn’t had a break. She’s been taking care of COVID-19 patients throughout the pandemic.“Other people have been working from home, we're not, we're here, we're in it,” she said. “It’s been hard because this has been going on for a long time and people are tired, but they're still showing up. You're seeing people that can't be with their loved ones, visitors are very, very restricted. They can Facetime with their families and things like that, but it’s not the same.”The County of San Diego reported an additional 15 deaths related to COVID-19 on Wednesday and a 62 percent increase in the number of COVID-19 hospitalized patients in a two week period.The Federal Medical Station set up at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido has 202 beds for non-ICU patients ready to go when needed, according to Palomar Health CEO Diane Hansen.Hansen said the health care system has the ability to expand the dedicated 48 ICU beds to 110 ICU beds if needed, but said making sure enough health care workers are available is one of the bigger issues at this point.“We do have capacity. We're seeing on average about 50 patients per day less than what we normally see this time of year,” said Hansen. “While we have capacity, my biggest concern is our ability to staff beds should the pandemic surge become greater.”“Staffing is a concern because not every nurse can take care of every kind of patient,” said Jaremczuk.Jaremczuk is most worried about the rapid rate of community spread. She said if nurses become sick, hospital operations could be disrupted.While she understands many people are tired of constantly being told to mask up, wash their hands and avoid gatherings, she’s urging everyone to continue to follow the health guidelines to protect those who are giving their all to save lives.“The patients also make an impact on our lives, we make connections and it's meaningful,” she said. “If we get exposed, if we get sick, we can't come to work and take care of patients.” 2459

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - City of San Diego crews spent Monday preparing for the first significant rainfall since May. “With the first rains of the season in the forecast, crews are busy clearing critical drains, putting no parking signs along flood prone streets and installing backup generators for the City’s crucial storm water pump stations,” the City of San Diego posted on twitter. "During the rains, 15 crews from the City's Storm Patrol will be actively patrolling, monitoring areas in the city and responding to instances including temporary flooding and downed trees or tree branches," added city spokesman Anthony Santacroce.The heaviest rain is expected overnight Tuesday through the day Wednesday, according to 10News meterologist Megan Parry. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Border Patrol agents and San Diego Police are at the scene of a possible suspicious device in Otay Mesa, officers confirmed Wednesday.Police said they got a call from Border Patrol about 3 p.m. telling them about a possible threat in a vehicle in a tow yard on the 9000 block of Airway Road.The vehicle had been seized during a drug smuggling investigation, police said.San Diego officers sent canine units to the scene and helped establish a perimeter.California Highway Patrol closed one lane on eastbound I-905 exiting onto SR-125. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities have identified one of the teens killed after he was believed to have mistakenly jumped from a bridge following a crash on a Carmel Valley freeway. According to the medical examiner, 18-year-old Ruben Ortiz Jr., died after jumping from the bridge on State Route 56 near Carmel Valley Road around 11 p.m. Tuesday. The other teen who died after jumping from the bridge was a 17-year-old male California Highway Patrol says was the driver of the vehicle. A family friend says the 17-year-old was Jesse Garcia. CHP says when the car came to a stop, it was facing oncoming traffic. Witnesses told CHP that six people got out of the car, running across the freeway lanes toward the right shoulder to avoid oncoming traffic. Four people from the group then jumped over the right shoulder, not realizing they were jumping off the bridge, CHP says. The four fell 50-75 feet from the structure, and CHP officials said two males died at the scene.A 14-year-old girl and 15-year-old girl were taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital with injuries of unknown severity.The two others from the group, who reportedly fled the scene after the crash, were located by police late Tuesday night, according to CHP. One of the teenagers is 14-years-old while the other is 15. Police say the responded to a crash on Broadway and North Avenue. The second pursuit happened later in the day around 12:30 p.m., police say.Both chases were terminated after police determined speeds were too high. 2204
