SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Monday is the deadline for San Diego County residents to register to vote in the Nov. 3 election.County residents will need to register or re-register to vote if they are not registered in San Diego County, recently moved or changed their name.County residents can check their registration status online at sdvote.com. If they are not registered or need to change their registration, they will be able to complete an online registration form.If their signature is confirmed through records at the Department of Motor Vehicles, it will automatically be sent to the Registrar of Voter's office.If a signature is not confirmed, the form can be printed out, signed and returned to the registrar's office at 5600 Overland Ave. in Kearny Mesa by 8 p.m. on Monday.Registration forms are also available at the offices of the U.S. Postal Service, City Clerk, public libraries and Department of Motor Vehicles.Election materials are also available in Spanish, Filipino, Vietnamese and Chinese.Registration forms must be postmarked or delivered to the Registrar of Voters office by 8 p.m. Monday. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An 18-year-old man was shot twice in the stomach during an armed robbery early Thursday morning in a Mission Beach parking lot, police said.Two 18-year-old men were in a car leaving a party at the Bahia Resort Hotel, 998 West Mission Bay Drive, when they were approached by two men on foot in a public parking lot on Gleason Road at around 12:30 a.m.One of the men on foot pulled out a gun and pointed it at the pair in the car while demanding items from them, San Diego Police Department Officer Robert Heims said. The victims got out of the car and the man with the gun stole a chain necklace from one of the victims.The other victim tackled the gunman and was shot twice in the stomach, the officer said.The suspects fled in an unknown vehicle and the victim who had his necklace stolen drove the gunshot victim to a hospital for treatment of his wounds, Heims said. The gunshot victim underwent surgery, but an update on his status was not immediately available.A detailed description of the suspects was not immediately available. 1061

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - In a 6-3 vote, the San Diego City Council today rejected a proposed .5 million sale of the property holding the city's only roller skating rink, Skateworld.The proposal called for the city to sell the parcel of land to big-box store developer Pacifica Companies, much to the chagrin of Skateworld supporters who called on the council to either collect more community feedback before approving the sale or reject it outright in favor of renovating the rink.Skateworld advocates collected thousands of signatures in an effort to save the skating rink, including a change.org petition that garnered more than 19,000 supporters. "I really appreciate that residents of every council district came to speak today about the community that Skateworld fosters,'' said City Councilwoman Barbara Bry. "I think there's so few family friendlyopportunities in that community that it's really essential.''The skating rink was developed under a state redevelopment agency more than 40 years ago. When Gov. Jerry Brown dissolved the redevelopment agencies in 2011, he ordered that their assets be liquidated to the highest bidder.The city put the property up for bid last year and named Pacifica the recommended buyer after three rounds of receiving offers for the site. Supporters of the sale, including City Councilman Scott Sherman, who represents the district Skateworld is in, argued the city's hands were tied and it should honor Pacifica's bid. City Council members Mark Kersey and Chris Cate also voted in favor of the sale."I have to try to make a decision on what is fair,'' Sherman said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public Tuesday for help in identifying a man who robbed a supermarket banking counter in Alpine about four months ago. The thief, who appeared to be in his late 20s or early 30s, approached a teller at the US Bank satellite office in the Albertsons store in the 2900 block of Alpine Boulevard and presented a demand note about 4 p.m. June 4, according to the FBI. After the clerk handed over an undisclosed amount of cash, the robber left the grocery store and fled in a blue Dodge Ram pickup truck. The perpetrator was described as a black-haired, roughly 5-foot-5-inch Latino in blue jeans, a black shirt, tan shoes and a black baseball cap with an ``LA'' logo on the front. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Wednesday publicly identified a Chula Vista city employee found slain in his home near Mount Helix.Chula Vista police personnel conducting a welfare check at the request of a co-worker found the body of 38-year-old Kevin Powell in his residence in the 4400 block of Carmen Drive in Casa De Oro shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday.Because the neighborhood is in an unincorporated area, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department was called in to take charge of the case, said sheriff's Lt. Thomas Seiver.Powell's death has been ruled a homicide, said Seiver, who declined to specify how the victim is believed to have died."The preliminary cause-of-death (finding) is being withheld for investigative reasons," Seiver said.Powell's work supervisor asked police to check on him after he missed several meetings, according to the sheriff's department. 878
