In its latest COVID-19 and cruise ship travel update, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends "all people" should avoid traveling on a cruise ship and river cruises worldwide. The agency has raised the level from three to four, which means it's a high risk of getting the coronavirus. On Oct. 30, the agency issued a level three, which urged cruise ships to carry at least 250 passengers in waters subject to U.S. jurisdiction. The new guidance says passengers should get tested three to five days after their trip and stay home for seven days, even if you test negative. If you decide to not get tested, passengers should stay home for 14 days. 667
It’s a transition of power on pause, with two differing views of how it will unfold.“Whatever happens in the future, who knows, which administration will be. I guess time will tell,” President Donald Trump said.“We are already beginning our transition,” said President-elect Joe Biden. “We're well underway."Yet, it is not happening in the way it normally operates. With nine weeks to go before Inauguration Day, the transition of power between the Trump administration to an incoming Biden administration is hitting some speed bumps.“The transition is really vital for the working of government,” said Todd Belt, a professor and director of the political management program at George Washington University. He said the transition period is about access to information, personnel and money. The Trump-appointed head of the Government Services Administration, Emily Murphy, is refusing to release more than million earmarked for a Biden transition.“She said she will not release it until the election is decided, leaving everybody wondering, ‘When does she think the election is going to be decided?’” Belt asked. That’s a problem in the interim because, he said, that kind of delay could leave the U.S. vulnerable, not just to a rampaging COVID-19 pandemic, but also to potential terrorist threats.“This is particularly important in the areas of national security where the time, the lame-duck period time, between administrations might make a very attractive target for our nation's enemies,” Belt said. There have been transition delays before, like in 2000, after the disputed Bush-Gore election went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. In this current instance, that’s not happening. Belt said that makes the situation this time unchartered territory.“If this gets dragged out beyond early December, it could really hamper a smooth transition,” he said.It is a time period that inches closer by the day. 1918
IRVING, Texas – In a letter sent to scouting families Monday, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) announced its support of the Black Lives Matter movement. The BSA’s National Executive Committee pointed out that the organization wasn’t living up to one of the 12 points of The Scout Law – bravery.“Brave means taking action because it is the right thing to do and being an upstander even when it may prompt criticism from some,” wrote the committee. “We realize we have not been as brave as we should have been because, as Scouts, we must always stand for what is right and take action when the situation demands it.”The BSA went on to say that there is no place for racism in scouting or in its communities, and it won’t be tolerated.“We condemn the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and all those who are not named but are equally important. We hear the anguish, feel the heartbreak, and join the country’s resolve to do better,” the committee wrote. The organization also said it would be introducing a specific diversity and inclusion merit badge that will be required to become an Eagle Scout.“It will build on components within existing merit badges, including the American Cultures and Citizenship in the Community merit badges, which require Scouts to learn about and engage with other groups and cultures to increase understanding and spur positive action,” wrote the committee.Additionally, the BSA is also committing to reviewing every element of its programs to ensure diversity and inclusion are ingrained at every level for participants and volunteers by applying a standard that promotes racial equality and denounces racism, discrimination, inequality and injustice. It’s requiring diversity and inclusion training for all BSA employees starting July 1 and taking action toward introducing a version for volunteersAnd lastly, the organization is conducting a review of property names, events and insignia to build on and enhance the organization’s nearly 30-year ban on use of the Confederate flag and to ensure that symbols of oppression are not in use today or in the future. 2115
It sounds outdated, but Cyber Monday is still a thing. The day of online sales was invented by retailers in the early days of the internet. It made sense because people had poky dial-up connections at home and faster ones at work. Plus everyone's feet were tired from all that schlepping through the mall all weekend. Now of course we all shop a lot online and on apps, whenever we want. And there's not really a difference between online stores and physical ones. Even Amazon, which effectively invented online shopping, has storefronts. 548
