SHARM EL-SHEIKH, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei, head of the Chinese delegation to the 15th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit held in Egypt, said on Thursday China will continue to support NAM as always.     "As one of the developing countries, China will continue to support NAM as always for it to play a role in international affairs and speak in one voice on issues related to the common interests of developing countries," said He.     "This is the chief purpose of my presence at the summit on behalf of the Chinese government," he said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua on the sidelines of the summit.     He said that though great changes in internal and external circumstances have taken place since its birth nearly half a century ago, NAM is still an important platform for developing countries to unite and strive to become stronger, with its tenet and spirit still showing great vitality.     China, now an observer to NAM, has attached great importance to its ties with NAM and maintained good cooperation with the movement in international affairs.     When NAM was formally established in 1961, then Chinese PremierZhou Enlai and other Chinese leaders sent congratulation messages to the founding conference, expressing support for the NAM's cause of independence, peace and development and its non-alignment policy.     China became an observer to NAM in September 1992, when a Chinese governmental delegation, headed by then State Councilor and Foreign Minister Qian Qichen, attended the 10th NAM summit in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. Since then, China has been a participant at every top NAM meeting.     At the 15th summit which wrapped up on Thursday in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, the Chinese vice foreign minister reiterated China's policy in strengthening cooperation with NAM to safeguard world peace, stability and development, particularly in jointly addressing the global financial crisis.     He told Xinhua that he has stressed in his speech at the summit that though the developing countries were not the maker of the global financial crisis, they are the most unfortunate victim. "This is unreasonable and unfair," he said.     He said besides the economic crisis and financial crisis on the tongues of men all over the world, the world is actually facing an unprecedented development crisis.     "Therefore, China has always urged the international community to attach great importance to the development issue when dealing with the financial crisis," the Chinese vice foreign minister said.     He said the world should increase input in development and work towards the realization of the UN Millennium Development Goals, as well as paying attention to major global issues, such as energy and food.     "If we don't do so, we will pay a higher price for our shortsightedness," He noted.     He said that at the upcoming G20 summit in Pittsburgh and the 64th session of UN General Assembly, both slated for September, China will continue to push the international community to give prominent importance to the development issue.     Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao have repeatedly pledged that China would earnestly fulfill its aid commitments to other developing nations, despite the severe difficulties it is facing due to the financial crisis, He said.     "We will continue to work together with other developing nations to strengthen unity and cooperation, weather through hardships and strive to build a harmonious world featuring lasting peace and common prosperity," He said.     During the 15th summit, NAM member states reached consensus on promoting solidarity and ratified documents on jointly addressing international and regional issues.     Founded in September 1961, NAM devotes itself to striving for the interests of developing countries all over the world. The movement now groups 118 member states, 17 observer countries and 10 observer organizations, comprising nearly two-thirds of UN member states and 55 percent of the world population.

BEIJING, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and his U.S. counterpart, Barack Obama, on Wednesday discussed bilateral relations and the A/H1N1 flu epidemic during a telephone conversation.     Hu recalled that during their meeting at the Group of 20 summit in London in early April, he and Obama agreed to work together to build a positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship in the 21st century.     The two leaders also reached extensive consensus on the establishment of the mechanism of China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogues, joint efforts to tackle the international financial crisis, and enhanced coordination and cooperation on major global and regional issues, Hu said.     "Now, both countries are seriously implementing the consensus," the Chinese president said.     "China is willing to work with the United States to push for a healthy and stable development of China-U.S. relations," he said.     Obama, for his part, said the meeting with Hu was important because it outlined the future development of bilateral cooperation and made a good start on the China-U.S. strategic dialogue.     The United States appreciated China's efforts to promote bilateral relations, he said.     The Chinese president expressed sincere condolences over the A/H1N1 flu epidemic that has hit parts of the United States, and said the Chinese government has started emergency measures to prevent a spread of the disease.     "We are willing to keep contact with the World Health Organization, the United States and other parties concerned, and strengthen cooperation to jointly confront this public health challenge," Hu said.     Obama said his country has adopted effective measures against the disease and will continue to keep a close eye on the outbreak.     The U.S. president said he was looking forward to meeting with Hu again during a meeting of leaders of the Group of Eight nations and developing countries in Italy. Obama said he was also looking forward to visiting China.     The two leaders also exchanged views on such issues as the situation on the Korean Peninsula and the situation in South Asia.

CHENGDU, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co., Ltd. (Tengzhong), a private Chinese firm who has struck a preliminary deal with General Motors Corp. (GM) for the premium SUV brand Hummer, said Wednesday it has no plan to manufacture Hummer in a Chinese plant. "Rather than setting up a plant in China, Tengzhong will use the current facilities including their employees in the United States," said Zhao Xiaolu, spokesman for the ongoing transaction for Tengzhong, a leading manufacturer of road, construction and energy industry equipment based in southwest China's Sichuan Province,     Zhao works for the Brunswick Group, which is handling the public relations matters for the Tengzhong deal. Tengzhong's managers were not available for comment on the transaction, which was disclosed Tuesday, a day after GM filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The Chinese buyer will also assume existing dealer agreements relating to Hummer's dealership network.     Tengzhong CEO Yang Yi said in a statement Tuesday that the company will "allow Hummer to innovate under the leadership and continuity of its current management team".     James Taylor, Hummer chief executive officer, went to Chengdu City and Deyang City, Tengzhong's current base and new base under construction, to discuss project cooperation with local officials in March.     "This transaction, if successful," said Taylor in a statement Tuesday," will allow us to embark on a more aggressive global expansion, ensuring a successful future with our new partners."     According to Zhao, Tengzhong will use internal fund and bank loan to make the transaction, which will be a "strategic move for the company to expand into the premium off-road vehicle segment". Formed in 2005 through a series of mergers, Tengzhong currently has more than 4,800 employees.     "It is probably more attractive for Chinese enterprise like Tengzhong to learn from the foreign brand's past successful experience in research, design, marketing and service," said Guo Guoqing, a professor with the School of Business, Renmin University of China.     Xu Zhaohui, head of the Sichuan Provincial Department of Commerce, said the officials will "strive to serve the transaction", which is expected to close in the third quarter of this year and is subjected to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.     In recent years, there have been several headline purchases of foreign auto brands by Chinese enterprises. In the first quarter, almost 2.68 million vehicles were sold in China, which marked a 3.88 percent increase year on year.     However, not all foreign auto brands revived under Chinese management. SAIC was deprived of management control despite its 51 percent ownership.     "Declining asset prices amid the financial crisis do not always mean a good bargain for the buyer," said Zhang Zhiyong, the chief adviser on auto market with Mingyuan Consultancy in Beijing, "a Chinese automaker should choose a foreign brand with conforming strategy and similar culture for possible acquisition."     The fuel-hungry brawny Hummer also pose new challenges for Tengzhong to control cost and boost competitiveness after takeover. BEIJING, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Many countries around the world said the July 5 riot in northwest China is an internal affair of the country, and the Chinese government is handling the incident properly.     A spokesman for the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, Andrei Popov, said Xinjiang is an inalienable part of China, and the unrest is a purely internal matter of China.     The riot in Urumqi, the capital of China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, left 197 people dead and more than 1,680 injured.     Popov also expressed hope that China could soon restore stability in the region by adopting effective measures in accordance with the law.     He said Belarus expresses its deep sympathy to the people who suffered personal injuries or loss of property during the violence.     A spokesman for Pakistan's Foreign Ministry, Abdul Basit, said his country deplores any attempt to hinder China's progress.     "We deplore any such attempt" which tries to impede the progress which has been achieved by China in the context of social harmony, he said in a recent interview with Xinhua.     "We are committed not to allow any element in Pakistan to work against the interests of China because China's interests are Pakistan's interests. We cannot allow any activity that will damage China's interests," Basit said.     Pakistan's Foreign Ministry, in a statement issued shortly after the Urumqi riot, applauded the efforts of the Chinese leadership to promote the concept of harmony both at home, in Asia and the rest of the world.     Turkish Parliament Speaker Koksal Toptan said his country supports the principle of resolving the issue within the framework of the territorial integrity of China.     The Turkish Foreign Ministry said the country highly values its relations with China and does not intend to interfere in China's internal affairs.     Thailand's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday the July 5 riot is a domestic issue of China and it believs China is capable of stabilizing the situation and restoring peace and harmony in Xinjiang.     Combodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said: "The Chinese government is taking appropriate measures to handle the issue."     The Foreign Ministry of Laos also issued a statement on the July 5 riot. It said Laos believes the measures the Chinese government has adopted to safeguard social stability are necessary and legitimate, and expressed hope the government could bring peace back to the region at an early date.
