He told villagers in Anxian County on Sunday that the government would strengthen support to farmers to help them rebuild their houses within two years, instead of three years as was the original schedule. "The reconstruction work for the new county should be based on advice from experts and the public," When said. He also visited the Sichuan Jiuzhou Electric Group, which has resumed production after the quake, and the Pangang Group Sichuan Chengcheng Special Steel Cooperation. When said reconstruction work should not only rely on government investment. "Private companies should be motivated to invest in post-quake reconstruction projects," he said. BEIJING, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao held a telephone conversation with his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama on bilateral ties Friday, with both sides expressing the willingness to further the ties. The Chinese president said China is ready to strengthen dialogue, promote mutual trust and expand cooperation with the United States in a bid to confront various global challenges together and push forward a stable development of the Sino-U.S. relationship. Hu said the core interest of either country should be respected by each other and taken into consideration. As the contagious financial crisis is still producing severe influence to national economies and people's lives, the international community should strengthen coordination and promote closer cooperation to stand up to the challenge, Hu said. Describing the Sino-U.S. ties as the most important bilateral relations for both sides, Obama said enhancing bilateral constructive dialogue and cooperation is in the interest of not only the two countries themselves, but the world at large. The U.S. side is expecting closer cooperation with China on major international and regional issues, he said, adding that the U.S. government is willing to join hands with China to develop a more active and constructive bilateral relationship. Hu Jintao said China acknowledged U.S. efforts in stabilizing the financial market and stimulating the economy, adding that China is willing to further strengthen communication and coordination with the U.S. side in macroeconomic policies, and firmly oppose trade and investment protectionism. Hu said China will join hands with the United States to work toward fruitful achievements in April's Group of 20 (G20) summit in London and promote healthy and stable development of the world economy and finance. Obama said it is crucial for the United States and China, the two most important economies, to enhance cooperation. Both sides exchanged visit invitations. The two leaders agreed to meet in the Group of 20 (G20) summit slated for April in London.
BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- China and Pakistan on Wednesday signed more than 10 deals ranging from trade and minerals to agriculture and satellites. The package of agreements came out of a two-hour summit at Beijing's Great Hall of the People as China rolled out the red carpet for Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, who is on his first state visit to the country since taking office in September. Zardari was welcomed by President Hu Jintao and received a 21-gun military salute at the Tian'anmen Square, festooned with the national flags of China and Pakistan. During the meeting, Hu reviewed the close bilateral ties, particularly the days of the Bhutto family. "Your entire family are old friends of the Chinese people," Hu told Zardari. "We will never forget the outstanding contribution Benazir Bhutto and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had made to boosting ties with China." Visiting Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari (R) reviews the honour guard with his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao during the welcoming ceremony held by Hu Jintao at the Tian'anmen Square, in Beijing, China, on Oct. 15, 2008. While reviewing the 57-year-old diplomatic ties, Hu attributed its sound and smooth growth to the leadership of the two nations, among others. He said China had always given priority to its relation with Pakistan, an important neighbor and strategic partner. Zardari said he was grateful for "the warm welcome that you have shown us and the love and affection that I can feel from across the aisle." "The only way I could do justice to the memory of my late wife and father-in-law was to make sure that I made my first presidential trip to China," the 53-year-old said. "I am hoping to assist the Pakistan-China relationship and take it further along. It's a duty history has bestowed upon me." On the economic front, Hu said the two countries were enjoying robust cooperation in economy and trade. They should continue to implement their free-trade pact, five-year trade program and other joint deals. He also proposed the two nations create new areas and explore new ways of cooperation. "China and Pakistan should vigorously boost border trade so as to bring more substantive benefits to their citizens." Zardari said the two should carry out big projects and work more closely in infrastructure, transport, environmental protection and finance, among others. The two leaders agreed to step up people-to-people exchanges and cooperation in culture, education, health and journalism. Hu thanked Pakistan for its support on issues concerning Taiwan and Tibet. He also appreciated Pakistani efforts in backing Beijing's hosting of the Olympic Games. CHONGQING, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China has approved the establishment of a bonded area in southwestern Chongqing Municipality in an effort to boost the opening and development of central and western regions. Chongqing Vice Mayor Huang Qifan said Tuesday at a press conference here that the first inland bonded area had been approved by the State Council, or the Cabinet. The 8.37-sq km Cuntan Bonded Area centers both the Cuntan Harbor and the Jiangbei International Airport. The bonded area will be completed in 2015. "The Cuntan Bonded Area will be built into a multi-functional area with most advanced logistics and preferential policies," Huang said. "It will also become an accelerator for the opening upof central and eastern inland cities." The Chongqing Bonded Area Development Company and the area's administration commission will start operation on Thursday. Huang did not reveal the investment for the bonded area or its operation time. Bao Zichuan, chairman of the company, said the bonded area will focus on harbor business, air transport, foreign trade, export-oriented processing and commodity displays. Enterprises in the bonded area will enjoy such preferential policies as tax rebates for exports and free tax for trading within the area. So far, China has established ten such free trade zones in the coastal areas from north to south.
YICHANG, Hubei, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Three Gorges Project has completed trial water storage operations for the year, with the water level in the reservoir exceeding 172 meters. As of Tuesday, the water level had risen 27.3 m since Sept. 28,when this year's storage plan began, said the developer of the massive water conservancy project, the China Three Gorges Project Corp. (CTGPC) on Friday. The water-raising measures ended on Tuesday when the water behind the dam reached 172.3 m and the reservoir held more than 19.3 billion cubic meters of water. The reservoir then began to discharge water. Generally speaking, the trial operation, which is a test of quality, went well. The structure, generators and shipping locks were all in normal condition and the water quality was not affected, said a CTGPC statement. The water level is expected to reach 175 m in 2009 when the Three Gorges project is completed. At 156 m, the target level for the second phase, the reservoir could be fully functional in terms of flood control, power generation and navigation control. Launched in 1993, construction of the gigantic concrete structure of the dam was completed and began to store water in May2006. Previously, the reservoir's temporary cofferdams held water at a depth of 135 to 139 m. The Three Gorges Project, with a budget equivalent to 22.5 billion U.S. dollars, is a multi-functional water control system built at the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Its main works are a dam, a five-tier ship lock and 26 hydropower turbo-generators. The dam will have 14 turbo-generators on the left bank and 12 on the right. Combined, they will produce 84.7 billion kw of electricity annually. There are plans to add six more turbines by 2012. As of June, 1.24 million residents had been relocated to make way for the dam construction.
