EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man in his mid-30s was killed Sunday afternoon after the SUV he was driving struck a tree in El Cajon.El Cajon police say the driver of a 1998 Ford Explorer drifted onto a center divider then slammed into the tree on N Second Street near Greenfield Drive at 1:49 p.m.The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released pending family notification.Surveillance video from a nearby store shows the impact of the crash and the aftermath. Several good Samaritans ran over to try to help the driver until police arrived.N Second Street between Persimmon Avenue and Greenfield Drive was closed off for approximately four hours as police investigated.Police said it was unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. Disney is allowing guests at Magic Kingdom to wear Halloween costumes for the first time during normal park hours.The park recently announced in a blog post that guests of all ages can wear costumes from Sept. 15 to Oct. 31.In June, the park canceled its annual Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party because of the coronavirus pandemic.But this year, guests would be able to get into the Halloween spirit with costumes, themed foods, and merchandise, the park said.According to the park's website, costumes cannot contain sharp objects, they must be family-friendly, they can't have weapons, and anyone over the age of 14 cannot wear a mask with their outfit.Guests under the age of 13 can wear a mask, but it cannot cover the entire face, and their eyes must be visible.The park said costumes that "reach or drag on the ground" such as "full-length princess dresses" are not allowed.The park also added that all guests must still wear a face-covering while at the park. 978
Donald Trump Jr. has been temporarily suspended from certain functions on Twitter for violating the website's rules for spreading misinformation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.According to a screenshot of Trump Jr.'s account shared by Republican strategist Andrew Surabian, Twitter suspended the president's son over a tweet that included a video with dubious COVID-19 information.On Monday, Trump Jr. tweeted a video of a group of people who claimed to be doctors who were touting the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine, a drug which the president has said is an effective treatment for COVID-19. The video also discouraged the use of masks.Several studies have shown the drug has not been effective in treating the virus, and in June, the FDA removed an Emergency Use Authorization for the drug in connection with COVID-19 treatments.CNN reports that the video was originally published by Breitbart News. During this pandemic, people aren’t interacting like they used to.Many schools have moved online, restaurants have moved outdoors, and public transportation is spacing out its seating.With less face-to-face interaction in the real world, scientists are now turning to artificial intelligence.“Robots are our friends,” said Jeffrey Krichmar, Ph.D., a professor of cognitive sciences at the University of California, Irvine (UCI).Recently, Krichmar’s team started testing socially assistive robots with the goal of helping people perform household chores, accomplish health care tasks and even offer them emotional support.“That could be very helpful if a person is impaired and can’t get help in the home because they’re locked down or quarantined,” he said.Krichmar says there’s a lot of societal benefits with this technology, too, like helping people cope with their feelings during isolation.“If I’m not able to get to you, but you have a robot there I can log on through the robot, have a conversation with you and then maybe do tasks around the house with a robot,” he said.Many of UCI’s robotic projects involve the Toyota Human Support Robot.“When you think about the social interaction, I think we’re all feeling this right now,” said Douglas Moore, Toyota’s director of technology for human support.Moore says working with UCI during the COVID-19 crisis could help many people both physically and emotionally.“One of the silver linings that I think we’re going to get out of this pandemic that we’re currently in, we’re going to develop a little bit more sympathy and empathy for the communities that idea with this on a day-to-day basis that have no real light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.Project leaders hope to get more of these robots in people’s homes“The ones that we’re doing with Toyota, they’re not commercially available yet and the ones that are a little pricey,” Krichmar said. “They’re like an expensive luxury car right now.”Krichmar believes more interest could help lower the cost of these robots and that more attention could create future innovation.“This pandemic is our Fukushima moment in a way,” Krichmar said of the COVID-19 crisis.“If this drags on a lot longer, it might be actually useful for this particular crisis,” he said. “But I’m almost thinking like the next crisis down the road.” 2338

In the weeks leading up to the November 2020 election, data provided by the Postal Service indicated a noticeable drop in on-time mail delivery as millions of Americans used the agency to vote-by-mail. To understand these delays, I sent a letter to the Inspector General of the United States Postal Service to request an investigation into the origins of the delays, and more importantly, what needs to be done to reverse these trends. Unfortunately, during the Holiday season—the Postal Service’s busiest time of the year—the combination of record mail volume and surges in COVID-19 cases have further hampered the agency’s ability to promptly deliver mail. In fact, as UPS and FedEx prioritize the distribution of vaccines, the Postal Service has taken on much of their package volume, adding more stress to an already overwhelmed system. Last week, it was reported that thousands of Postal Service employees were quarantined due to the pandemic, creating employee availability shortages across the country.For the duration of the pandemic, Postal Service employees have reported working each and every day to ensure mail delivery continued as states across the country enacted stay-at-home orders. As COVID-19 vaccines become more widely available, I am fighting to ensure these heroic Americans are classified as essential workers, therefore enabling them to be among the earlier recipients of the vaccine. Last Friday, I spoke with Postmaster General Louis DeJoy regarding the ongoing delays associated with mail delivery and stressed the need to rectify the situation as millions of Americans continue to rely on the Postal Service. Let me be clear—the more than 600,000 Postal Service employees nationwide are among the most dedicated public servants in our government workforce, and I have no doubt that they are doing everything in their power to move the mail as quickly and safely as possible. This country owes them a debt of gratitude for their commitment, dedication, and perseverance over the last 10 months.
